BOUND IN FEAR

Osiah

OSIAH

Hailing from the extreme music melting pot that is the North East of England, Osiah transcend the deathcore label with what could possibly be the most torturous barrage of filth the UK has produced in recent years. Crushingly intense breakdowns and deathly chops tread a familiar path, but jarringly detuned guitars, unpredictable tempo changes and vocals that range from wide-ranging pitched screams to commanding guttural bowel openers add an extra evil to the sound that cannot be put in words.

Osiah Released their first full-length album ‘Terror Firma’ in June 2016 via Siege Music. The album gained praise from Metal Hammer Magazine, Bloody-disgusting and many other prestigious publications, cementing the band as the hottest and heaviest band on the UK Deathcore scene.

The resulting work lead to the band signing to Unique Leader Recordsin 2018 and released their sophomore album “Kingdom of Lies” in 2019. Fast forward to 2021 and the band released their 3rd album “Loss”. This record is the truest representation of Osiah to date. Loss is Osiah’s darkest record to date, combining the monolithic misery of our debut record Terror Firma, with a more matured technicality first showcased in our sophomore; Kingdom of Lies. Featuring a new lineup; Loss will cater to those familiar with our aggression, and also allow new listeners to be shown a raw unfiltered version of who we are before they have an opportunity to witness our previous efforts

WAKE

Canada’s WAKE have never been a band interested in repeating themselves, this abundantly apparent from their discography, having evolved with every release. 2020’s Devouring Ruin made this more clear than ever, hammering the point home with the Confluence EP in the same year, and now they return with Thought Form Descent, their most dynamic, diverse and emotional release to date. “Id describe the record as a place to reconsider what ‘extreme’ means. The words ‘brutal’, ‘crushing’, ‘devastating’ are overused adjectives for extreme music. We wanted to force people to confront the idea that ‘brutal’ or ‘extreme’ ideas arent just blastbeats or angular tritones, or, more importantly, ‘brutal’ elements alongside pointedly passive elements can create their own experience that can channel both and neither.” The result is eight nuanced tracks that run the gamut from relentlessly heavy to exquisitely beautiful, often simultaneously, and instantly grab hold of the listener, demanding their full attention. However, at the same time, they are lushly textured and densely layered, and offer more with every subsequent exposure, unfurling to show hidden depths, and taking WAKE to a whole new level.

Having been forced to scrap touring plans for Devouring Ruin due to the coronavirus pandemic, the band instead went straight to work on Confluence, and as soon as that was finished they started on Thought Form Descent, not pausing between releases. Writing so much over a relatively short period of time absolutely affected the approach to the latest record. “It was definitely on everyones mind that we needed some new elements. It was never clear how or why, but I think the idea of repeating the same ideas again, within the same calendar year, was just too boring to consider. When youre in the process of fleshing out the reasonably intensive process of finishing a record you tend to over-analyze every tiny variable, but in retrospect we definitely had conversations about new levels, new textures, and new arrangements.” Being in ‘the zone’ definitely helped the band to write, but at the same time they recognized that there were downsides to this. Having been writing so consistently and with few breaks, the members realized that just letting songs flow naturally would result in producing the same song over and over again. “There was a distinct effort to force the issue and disrupt our process. It was time for ultimatums. There were a fair few slowdowns and puzzling moments to overcome as we adjusted from what felt natural to what we suspected, objectively, was better.”

The title Thought Form Descent comes from the idea of creating “a sort of labyrinth within the mind and manifesting it into physical reality, and descending into it”, which ties into the lyrics, vocalist Kyle Ball this time taking a different approach to writing. “Instead of using my personal issues as the focal point I wrote a non-linear fiction story that focuses on escapism and existentialism. I do incorporate personal issues/experiences into the plot of the story, the character could more or less be me, but its definitely more embellished than my usual writing, with it focusing more on the story than it does on myself.” The basic plot is about a character who is faced with his own insignificance, and who finds himself at odds with waking life and discovers a greater meaning in the unknown. Through the means of lucid dreaming, meditation and altered states, he travels to places unknown and for better or worse discovers what is behind the doors of reality. On “Mourning Dirge (Repose of the Dead)” the character “who has come to odds with life after a near death experience that had seemed to reveal another plane of existence or something greater, delves into a world of altered states and discovers he can reach something similar to what he experienced near death. He becomes enamored with the idea that something else exists, and starts falling deep into the well of obscurity.” Then, on “Infinite Inward” the character “at this point, lost between whatever is considered reality and places traveled, incorporates a meditation ritual called ‘the digging method’. Through that method he creates a sort of both physical and metaphysical labyrinth that the majority of the remaining story will take place in.” With “Venerate (The Undoing of All)”, the character “confused over whether the astral self or physical self is the true existence, finds himself at battle within two conscious states which are tearing between two realities. Ultimately, trying to undo both into absolute nothingness and ceasing to exist entirely.”

To track the album, the band once again collaborated with Dave Otero (Allegaeon, Cattle Decapitation) at Flatline Audio in Denver, CO. “Dave is someone who does something we love – supersedes what people think of him. Sure, he recorded many successful death metal albums, but his ability to understand pop music and its composition, his knowledge of music theory and his willingness to get right into the movement of a song and its chord progressions, not just the riffs, are things that go way beyond ‘death metal’. He can make hard right turns into wildly different sonic territory without batting an eyelash, and he always has an idea during the deviation, too. He contributed a lot to this record.” Having prepared exhaustively in advance, once in the studio the band were able to try new things, play with ideas and rearrange songs, having the time to go down the proverbial rabbit hole and see where it took them. Kevin Hufnagel of Gorguts also makes an appearance, playing guitar on “Pareidolia” and “Observer To Master”, the latter track one of the most melodic on the record.

At this stage WAKE are happy to have plans to return to the road, with two albums’ worth of material that has yet to be played live, and they are comfortable with where they stand and the role they play in 2022. “The challenges we present listeners with are simple, but cumulatively, they sum to something difficult to categorize without serious mental acrobatics. I think many bands have very specific goals, and I think thats certainly a product of the current state of the music industry and society in general. WAKE works hard to be subversive in ways you might not notice initially, and that’s one of the things that makes us vital – not being afraid to sacrifice short-term gains in order to build an output which stays consistent amidst many surface-level changes. That way, any territory we see fit to mine will still remain familiar, despite the aesthetic changes. As an ethos, this is a stark contrast from most metal artists today, who generally seek to be ‘best in class’ for their specific genre. Our sound will always lurk between any sonic element we introduce, no matter the genre, tempo or timbre.”

Cab Ellis

CAB ELLIS

One hundred and fifty New York twenty-somethings of all shapes and sizes are packed like sardines into the ground floor of a 2-story apartment building on the Brooklyn/ Queens border. It’s already past midnight, but the crowd stands their ground diligently in anticipation. Outside it’s frigid, but inside everyone is shedding layers and stashing coats in corners. They are inside the home of Cab Ellis, an electrifying Alternative Rock band consisting of 8 members including three guitars, a section of horns, and a lead vocalist who will, in just a few minutes, capture the crowd with his intensely and feverishly passionate performance.

All at once, Cab Ellis will rumble down the stairs, take the living room stage, and perform an hour of frantic rock music to a mosh pit of the sweaty and ecstatic fans they have built in New York.

As hundreds of sneakers and boots pound the linoleum floor to the beat, Cab Ellis performs songs from their recently released sophomore record, The East Coast Hold On, recorded in 2021 with Strokes producer Gordon Raphael. They also play a selection of favorites from their debut album, Nighttime OCD, which was recorded and released in Los Angeles in 2020.

To kick off 2023, Cab Ellis will be taking their live show to 14 cities across the U.S. for The East Coast Hold On Tour.

The Silent Comedy

THE SILENT COMEDY

Rough-hewn, expansive American rock & roll, the music of The Silent Comedy channels the blues, Honky- Tonk, and punk into a euphoric declaration that when trouble arises, we lift our voices high. Joshua and Jeremiah Zimmerman spent their formative years traveling the world before settling in California. In search of catharsis, the teens found solace in songwriting. Years of touring followed, performing with Dave Matthews, Mumford and Sons, and Vampire Weekend, and at Bonnaroo, Kaaboo and more.

The band recorded and self-released a series of albums, selling hundreds of thousands and streaming millions. Still, they needed to capture the magic of their live show. Work with Grammy-nominated producer Chris “Frenchie” Smith led to a body of work that includes the EP Friends Divide and LP Enemies Multiply.

After a hiatus, they are ready once again to bring their medicine to the masses. The band’s new release is an anthemic reinterpretation of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”. “Fleetwood Mac was in a period of turmoil when they recorded the original,” explains Joshua. “this seems like a fitting tribute in a strange way.” Their music is a source of comfort in the face of uncertainty and despair. “If our music continues to have that effect on anyone at all, then we will be here, making more of it” says Joshua.

BOYBRAIN

When you hear Boybrain you’ll wonder how a voice that sounds like it’s been gargling razor blades and whiskey can come from such a compact package. Patti (The Dials, New Black, Ratattack) returns with her new baby; a snarling pissed off baby reminiscent of 1980s Punk with a touch of woven in melody. Joining her on lead guitar is Inga (Wanton Looks) folding in a string of catchy virtuosic leads that she has become so well known for. Dr. Doom (Jesse Trip and the Nightbreed, Slutter, Cat Meat) of New Orleans on the bass adds an element of sludge yet still manages to blow your hair back with her stage antics and demonic back-ups. A man in demand, drummer Colin of Inebrium, Propane! Propane!, and formerly Boys on Trial has found his home in this band of piss and vinegar. Boybrain’s debut EP “In The Company Of Worms” was released 2/22/22.

Sunny War

SUNNY WAR

Sunny War enlivens traditional folk and blues by freshening her musical attack and writing lyrics that reflect 21st century concerns. Her first album, “Worthless”, arrived in 2014, and she continued to gain attention as she built up a cult following that crested with the release of 2018’s “With the Sun”.

Born Sydney Lyndella Ward to a single mother in Nashville, the singer/songwriter spent her childhood moving around the United States with her parent, spending significant time in both Nashville and the Detroit suburb of Rochester. During this time, she learned to love a wide variety of music, picking up the guitar at the age of 13. After she spent a rough period combating substance abuse and poverty, she gravitated to blues and folk and relocated to California settling in Venice Beach.

Adopting the performing name Sunny War, she’d sometimes moonlight with her punk side band Anus Kings, but it was her folk-blues showcased on a self-released album that began to gain notice from local scenesters – including critics at LA Weekly. After a few years, she released her official debut, “Worthless”, which appeared in 2014. A second independent record, “Red White and Blue”, arrived in 2016.

In 2018 Sunny War released, via Hen House Studios, “With the Sun”, After that album, she moved from Venice Beach to downtown Los Angeles, quickly delivering her next LP also on Hen House “Shell of a Girl”, the following year. Her critically acclaimed EP “Can I Sit With You” premiered in 2020.

The Last Gang

THE LAST GANG

The year is 2021. America is still fighting its way through an ongoing pandemic, currently fueled by the ignorance of millions who have decided science isn’t good enough for them. Countless lives have been lost or disrupted by an inefficient government loaded with corrupt politicians, egged on by snake oil salesmen who are inexplicably given nightly platforms on cable TV or allowed to spread their disinformation through social media. Make no mistake: Rome is burning. We are fiddling.

Pissed off yet? So is The Last Gang. This California punk quartet had big plans for 2020, with a seemingly endless string of tour dates keeping them on the road in support of their Fat Wreck Chords debut, Keep Them Counting. Crowds were getting bigger. Sing-alongs were getting louder. Spirits were getting higher. The only problem? The band was trying to write a new record simultaneously, and it wasn’t going well.

“Our downfall is we want to tour a lot, but it’s sometimes hard for us to write because it takes so much out of me,” begins frontwoman Brenna Red. When the world came to a standstill in March 2020, it was actually a blessing in disguise for Red. She could finally focus on everything happening outside of their tour van — and she quickly realized it wasn’t pretty.

“Because COVID happened, I was allowed to not rush, and we stepped back and re-wrote songs,” she explains. “Then I went to Fat Mike’s to write with him, and he challenged me to write more Clash-influenced reggae. I listened to London Calling to get inspired, but I think Joe Strummer once said if you want to be inspired, don’t listen to your idols — listen to your idols’ idols. So I also listened to a lot of Toots And The Maytals and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and a ton of Trojan Records compilations.”

One listen to Noise Noise Noise, and you’ll discover a band who has not only pushed their musical boundaries in new and unexpected ways, but a lyricist in Red who has unlocked a new side of herself, spitting barbs both personal and political at whoever might listen. We’re obviously punk at our core,” she says. “People expect to hear something, and that can become tedious and somewhat boring. But when you throw somebody a curveball, if they hate it, that’s fine. But more than likely, they’re gonna go, ‘What is this?’ and it’ll pull them more into the album.”

Noise Noise Noise is nothing if not full of curveballs. The album opens with the “Guns Of Brixton”-esque title track, the first of the album’s many forays into guitar upstrokes and elastic basslines. The next curveball comes in the very next track, “WFTW,” the rare punk song that’s four minutes long and feeling a little bit like Searching For A Former Clarity-era Against Me!with Red cramming as many syllables into her verses as humanly possible. It’s also one of many new songs elevated by lead guitarist Ken Aquino, making his recorded debut with the now-quartet.

“Ken is a great lead guitar player, but my huge thing I love about Ken is at his core, he’s a melody man — he can sing pretty,” she gushes. “He adds so much to our band.” Aquino also used to work in the same studio as producer Cameron Webb (MotörheadSum 41), who just so happened to be behind the boards for Noise Noise Noise (which was also co-produced by NOFX’s Fat Mike and Useless ID’s Yotam Ben Horin). Red was thrilled to reunite with Webb, who previously produced Keep Them Counting. “I know he’s not going to let me sound bad,” she says. “He’s going to push me.”

Look no further than “Shameless,” a true gem of the album, a melodic punk banger with Red turning in a career-best vocal performance. The curveballs keep coming deep into the tracklisting, with the sludgy 6/8 tune “Intelligence Is A Plague.” In it, Red fires salvo after salvo at the ignorant masses as well as the publications that prey upon them (marking what is probably the first time alt-right “news” outlet Breitbart has been name-checked in a song).

“It was inspired by this overwhelming feeling of ‘Why aren’t we listening to the people who can tell us how to fix these huge problems?’ COVID, climate change, you name it. To me, it’s like, ‘I don’t know what to do, so I’m going to listen to you.’ But those people don’t want to be humble. They’d rather be ignorant and feel like they’re right.”

This gets to the crux of Noise Noise Noise: These songs speak to her, and she hopes they speak to you, too. “I write music just to be alive,” she concludes. “I hope there’s something that can be taken from it to make you feel that electricity inside of yourself, whether happiness, pain, bittersweet memories… Just pick apart the art and put it inside of your own life.”

To record their third album, Blink-182 turned to veteran punk rock producer Jerry Finn, who previously worked on Green Day’s breakthrough album Dookie (1994). Enema was the band’s first album to feature second drummer Travis Barker, who replaced original drummer Scott Raynor.

Janice Rodriguez (first name rhymes with Denise because she likes to be difficult), is a Chicago-based entrepreneur and comedian. When she’s not slaving over an unnecessary spreadsheet or micromanaging others, she performs her unique brand of stand up across the Chicagoland area.  Janice uses her experience as being the whitest Latina she knows and an at best average marriage partner to tell her side of the story. The band fills their summer and winter breaks from school with shows at local bars and venues, parties, or just about anywhere that will have them. Recently the band just released their debut single ‘When The Sun Goes Down’. The guys are currently working on their debut album and continue to play shows in the Chicago area.

SPIRITUAL POISON

Ethan Lee McCarthy will perform at Roadburn 2022 under the moniker of Spiritual Poison; a new creative outlet that has morphed out of what was Many Blessings. Having identified a creative stream that was somewhat distinctive from the discordant harsh noise of Many Blessings, and that didn’t flow into his work with Primitive Man, McCarthy christened it Spiritual Poison.

The DIY ethic remains, as does the bleak soundscapes that seem wired into his DNA, only this time they’re more focussed. With themes that explore the dichotomy between city living and mankind’s relationship with nature, overlaid with the juxtaposition of the digital and spiritual worlds, Spiritual Poison has a lot of ground to cover. Although the output is shrouded in a hazy otherworldliness, McCarthy doesn’t shy away from channeling his experiences of being a person of colour living in modern day America, the violence, and the end-times narratives that permeate daily life.

As well as performing his own solo Spiritual Poison set, McCarthy will also join Full of Hell for a special performance of their Garden of Burning Apparitions album. Both shows will highlight the maturing sound of an experimental artist eager to explore the outer reaches of his artistry.

arreis

ARREIS

From modest, humble beginnings, ARREIS knew somewhere deep down that her circumstances were stifling. Upon moving to Nashville, she was ready to finally evolve into the persona she had always dreamed of. With role models such as Lady Gaga, ARREIS knows how to both create an excellent concept record and dazzle audiences at a live show.

The concept of “synesthesia” was introduced to ARREIS in college when she was writing her first record Blindside. When asked to describe the album, she would always use color-based terms, and overwhelminly, Blindside was associated with various shades of purple. From soft, nostalgic lavender to the bruises of violet, Blindside demonstrates the idea that being vulnerable and opening up to people are some of the hardest acts to accomplish.

In her next record Vices, ARREIS takes on the human condition and dives deeply into the issue that everyone has dealt with at some point in their lives – the fact that everyone has a little darkness. From fiery, bright reds to muted, sullen maroons, the red era is ready to make a dramatic mark on the world of pop music.

MATTHEW SKOLLER

MATTHEW SKOLLER is one of Chicago’s most respected harmonica players and Blues bandleaders. For the past 36 years he has played all of Chicago’s heaviest showcase venues and toured much of the world with his super tight ensembles. Deeply rooted in the tradition of the Chicago blues elders with whom he worked and studied, Skoller has developed a unique style that conjures the past while being firmly planted in the present. His songs explore many of the issues and realities of life during this age of technology, information and horrific upheaval. Skoller, known for his fiery and engaging performances, combines passionate harp playing and singing with original song writing and prodigious production skills.

speedealer

SPEEDEALER

Speedealer originally formed in 1994 in Lubbock, TX, under the name REO Speedealer. When REO Speedwagon served the band a cease-and-desist order on their moniker, they shortened their name to Speedealer. In 1998, the band released their debut, self-titled album on Royalty Records. The following year, the hard rocking foursome — made up of singer/guitarist Jeff Hirshberg, bassist Rodney Skelton, drummer Harden Harrison, and guitarist Eric Schmidt — released their follow-up record, Here Comes Death, on the same label. Royalty Records went bankrupt soon after the band’s second release, leaving Speedealer to their own devices for exposure. Label-less and musically driven, they played 309 shows in 1999 to stay in the public eye, pairing up with such like-minded, aggressive rockers as Zeke, Fu Manchu, Neurosis, and GWAR. Speedealer’s efforts finally paid off when Palm Records A&R man Michael Alago (who signed Metallica to Elektra and White Zombie to Geffen) contracted the band to his label. Palm Records re-released Here Comes Death in 2000, and Second Sight in 2002.

With an eclectic mix of neo-soul vocals, folksy guitar, pop-style piano with trap beats sprinkled in for flavor, she likes to refer to her genre as, “BlackGirlMagic.” She has been active as a recording artist since 2015, releasing four projects since then: most recently, TRY&REMEMBER, a sonic journey thru the risks one takes on their way to healing, which she released in October 2021.

THE SKIES ARE SHIFTING

THE SKIES ARE SHIFTING

The Skies Are Shifting is a post-hardcore band centered in the Chicago area that blends styles across the genre with elements of math rock and progressive post hardcore. The band name signifies the ever changing nature of the world and those in it due to the passage of time, for better or worse. This is also reflected in the various songwriting styles as each song pulls the listener through a shifting, multi-layered soundscape of sonic palletes like lush cleans and blistering distortions, that will be sure to thrill any lover of the genre.

MACHÏN

3 Brothers who started creating music at an early age in Cicero IL just a couple minutes from Chicago. Dad always listened to the classics, in english and spanish. From Def Leppard and Motley Crue, to Soda Stereo and Heroes del Silencio. We grew up on those jams and eventually got into creating our own originals. People always seem to be suprised whenever they hear us live, with their jaws on the floor 😉 With embedded classic rock roots, MACHIN is sure to leave you bobbing your head to the sound of ROCK!

Tim and the Sarge

TIM AND THE SARGE

Tim Larson’s stark, often blunt lyrics and weathered baritone shares similarities to Michael Gira (Swans, Angels of Light) and Mark Lanegan, there are also generous shades of hazy shoegaze guitar and moody gothic overtones wedded to song structures that are pure American folk/blues at heart. It’s no surprise that Larson’s varied influences connect the dots between Son House and Bauhaus.

HELP HOUNDS

We are a four piece from Northwest Indiana writing Americana, indie/folk songs. Self-reflective and a little self-deprecating at times, we sing about nice weather and the human condition. Each member brings a little something different from toe-tapping melodies to classical cello, airy guitar sweets to driving banjo picking. It’s the peoples’ romp and roll!

Sonny

SONNY

It’s been ‘All Gas No Brakes’ for SONNY since sharing his 9-track mixtape in February. Marked by co-signs from Chicago creative forces like Andrew Barber, LONEWOLF and Lyrical Lemonade among others, the “KILL BILL” artist’s sets are as lively and enigmatic as his music. Opening for renowned artists such as Dro Kenji, Midwxst and more, SONNY’s creative style thrives by staying “RISKY” — referencing his ‘AGNB’ hit with LONEWOLF’ — above all. A true descendant of Chicago’s drill roots, SONNY is at his best when in front of his home crowd.
