The Quirk is a Midwest Punk band from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Fronted by Bek Graham (vocals, guitar), Pat Brinkley (guitar), Jon Moody (bass), and Jen Tonon (vocals, drums) and Ash Ginder (sax). Harnessing the raw power and grittiness of 90s grunge bands with playful ska-oriented influences and empowering lyrics.
For the better part of the last 15 years, the duo of Max Dameron (guit/vox) and Sam Ford (drums/vox) have been too weird and too wild for this lame-ass planet. After enjoying vagabond stints living in Portland, Los Angeles, and Brooklyn, they now call Detroit home. Here they rebuild, out of the scraps and wreckage of the 21st century, something which casts aside any rules or adherence to banal tropes. Specializing in the unexpected, Max and Sam have wrought an individual sound that’s as much post-Melvins sludge punk as it is futurist prog metal. Their forthcoming self-titled debut, recorded in 2022 at High-Bias in Detroit, puts on display the fruits of their metamorphosis. From the soaring triumphal fuzz of “Uncanny Valley” or the sweep and thrust of “House of Butterflies” their craft is precise, they’re just making up their own shapes to sculpt. Times change and artists mature: now under the name PSYCHIC TRASH, Ford and Dameron come to Riding Easy Records as veterans turning a fresh page, reinvigorated at the prospect of forging a new path and the beneficiaries of about a decade and a half’s slog through the underground. Psychic Trash’s self-titled debut is unmistakably uncompromising, a little theatrical, intermittently manic, and deceptively broad in style for just how much punk rests beneath.
New York native Marlon Craft worked for years on his music before sharing his heady, lyrical rap. Gravitating towards an instrumental style that incorporated both rugged golden-age East Coast hip-hop influences and jazz-touched live instrumentation, Craft’s politically conscious lyrics and social questioning were the driving force behind his 2019 studio debut, Funhouse Mirror, and its 2021 follow-up, How We Intended.
Marlon Craft grew up in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, the son of a jazz musician father. He spent his teenage years playing basketball and ravenously absorbing hip-hop sounds, and in college he began making music of his own. In 2015, while finishing college, he self-released his first mixtape, Pieces. He followed it the next year with the so, what are you doing? EP and singles like “Workin'” and “Reason.” Craft’s style developed over the course of these releases, and his technical abilities sharpened on 2017 mixtape The Tunnel’s End. In 2019, he signed on with Sony affiliate Same Plate Entertainment for the release of his politically charged studio debut, Funhouse Mirror. The album’s lyrics unpacked issues of racism, classism, and wealth disparity and featured cameo appearances from Ricky Motion, Dizzy Wright, and others. Led by the singles “Hoodie Weather” and “Get Off My Yard,” Craft’s sophomore album, How We Intended, arrived in early 2021. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi

Led by guitarist/vocalist Andrew Lee, RIPPED TO SHREDS emerge from the West Coast underground with their ferocious new album, 劇變 (Jubian). The death metal trailblazers unleash their most fully realized and visceral work yet. Recorded and mixed by Lee in his home studio and mastered by Damian Herring at Subterranean Watchtower, 劇變 (Jubian) proves to be RIPPED TO SHREDS at their most focused and refined.
The album bursts wide open with “Violent Compulsion for Conquest,” an elegantly dark, new kind of chainsaw sound teeming with acidic vocals gnashing out lyrics inspired by the Mukden Incident. From its lightning-flash solos to those immensely killer echoing “Ough!”s, this absolute scather, according to Lee, was born to lead. Elsewhere, longtime RIPPED TO SHREDS fans will find the latest chapter of the ongoing ‘Sun Moon Holy Cult’ saga to be its most thrilling episode thus far. One of the album’s most impressive and catchiest tracks,“漢奸 (Racetraitor),” represents that “straight-up melodeath” banger Lee says he’s always wanted to produce while also giving vent to his experience as a minority in America. The charring “Reek of Burning Freedom,” Lee says, is “an anti-war song” that incites to remind its discerning listers of the the United States’ “indiscriminate bombing” campaign waged on North Korea during the Korean War.
It’s not about taking over. With 劇變 (Jubian), which translates to ‘upheaval,’ RIPPED TO SHREDS make their intentions clear.
