DEATH ANGEL

Not every band can live up to a legacy but every once in a while a group exceeds expectations by pushing boundaries in a genre they’ve helped create. DEATH ANGEL is one such band and with “Killing Season” they have raised the bar for themselves as well as maybe even creating a new genre most aptly described as “thrash n’ roll.” Produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Velvet Revolver, Shadows Fall, Stone Sour) at Studio 606 in Northridge, CA, this is DEATH ANGEL’s most sonically devastating record to date.

Among the youngest bands ever to storm the metal genre, DEATH ANGEL have come to be known as one of the most influential bands to emerge from the thriving Bay Area Thrash Metal Scene in the early 1980s, an era where one could catch Cliff Burton (Metallica) at the front of the stage at Ruthie’s Inn banging his head to Death Angel’s inventive style, and speedy, complex arrangements.

In 1986, a DEATH ANGEL demo produced by Kirk Hammett (Metallica) titled Kill As One sparked the interest of Enigma Records. The band was soon signed and the band’s debut, The Ultra Violence, was released in 1987. Drummer Andy Galeon was just 14 years old at the time. The album was a full-frontal assault on the ears, buzzing with the group’s youthful energy, and The Ultra Violence sold 40,000 copies in just four months. Another innovative recording, Frolic Through the Park, followed, marking DEATH ANGEL’s evolution both lyrically and musically. “Bored,” another track from the band’s second release, highlighted the cutting-edge band’s inventive dynamics, and won a spot on MTV’s “Headbanger’s Ball.”

Geffen Records was impressed enough with DEATH ANGEL’s television premier to offer the band a deal, and DEATH ANGEL became the first band of their breed to appear on the major label’s roster. At Geffen, the band released what is widely regarded as one of the most original and accomplished thrash metal albums ever recorded, Act III. The record pushed the limits of the genre to create something truly unique, a definitive work that is essential to any metal fan’s music collection. Death Angel’s masterful songwriting ability was once again on display nationwide in 1990, as the videos for “Seemingly Endless Time’ and ‘Room With a View’ saw heavy rotation on MTV.

DEATH ANGEL’s world tour between 1986 and 1990 included two sold-out tours of Japan. In fact, nearly every date on the Act III World Tour were sold out to capacity, a remarkable achievement for any band, but particularly stunning for such a young group, not to mention one comprised of cousins.

DEATH ANGEL’s trajectory to fame was tragically cut short in 1990, when the band’s tour bus crashed in the Arizona desert. Drummer Andy Galeon was critically injured, and would need more than a year to recover. During this downtime, vocalist Mark Osegueda left the band and moved to New York to pursue a life outside of music. The remaining members went on to form The Organization, and released two full-length albums under that name. The “O,” as they came to be known, toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, including two appearances at Holland’s famed Dynamo Open Air Festival, a support slot on Rob Halford’s “Fight” tour, and as the main support for a Motorhead tour in Europe.

The “O” disbanded in 1995 and the members split up into various projects. DEATH ANGEL wouldn’t resurface again until 2001 to perform at a cancer benefit for frontman Chuck Billy (Testament) called “Thrash of the Titans.” The response was so great that many offers came quickly in 2002, beginning with a “secret” gig in San Francisco, and sold it out under the psuedo name, “Kill As One.”

The next year saw DEATH ANGEL supporting Metallica at the Fillmore in San Francisco as well as supporting Anthrax and Halford in the US. What began as a gathering of positive vibes for a friend turned into a full time mission to continue a journey that began so long ago. In 2004 Death Angel released their long awaited fourth studio disc, The Art of Dying; on Nuclear Blast. A natural progression from Act III; the new album delivered straight Thrash Metal with diverse musicality to rave reviews worldwide. The band hit the road to support T.A.O.D., embarking on an extensive tour with festival appearances in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Finland, Mexico and Japan. The group found themselves sharing the bill with many of their early influences from UFO to Alice in Chains, The Exploited to Guns n Roses!

DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR

DEATH BY STEREO

Since their inception in 1998, DEATH BY STEREO has been balancing consciousness and chaos with their unique genre-bending amalgam of hardcore, metal and punk. Previously, the band released their last five studio records via Epitaph, Indecision and Serjical Strike Records. DBS, as they are known by many of their loyal followers, have assembled a worldwide fan base built upon a seemingly endless international tour schedule, with enough passport stamps to make many of their contemporaries jealous. They have shared the stage many times over with the likes of Slipknot, AFI, Serj Tankian, Avenged Sevenfold, and Rise Against, just to name a few. They have headlined some of the biggest and best festivals around the world (Germany’s “With Full Force”, Belgium’s “Grozerock”, U.S.’s “Warped Tour” and Colombia’s “Rock Al Parque”). Having toured in over 20 countries is an accomplishment few bands of any stature can lay claim to.

DARKEST HOUR

A bastard child born of the mid 90s punk/metal/hardcore movement, Washington, DC’s DARKEST HOUR combine the passion, energy, and soul of punk/hardcore with the style, speed, vengeance and fury of melodic speed/thrash/death metal.

DARKEST HOUR have helped defined the entire New Wave of American Metal sound as one of the pioneers of modern metal/core. A sound that gave the metal and hardcore/punk world the revitalization it surely needed. This style blended the raw, hardcore punk of the 80s, with the Scandinavian death metal of the 90s and forged a sound that would later become the template for modern metal.

Since their inception 23 years ago, Darkest Hour has released 9 studio full lengths (via 11 different record labels), appeared in major motion pictures, US television shows, video games, and have toured the world extensively covering 6 of the 7 continents.

DASTARDLY

.The marriage between old west folk and the ambiguous genre of “indie rock” makes the songs of Dastardly a palatable playlist for those who aren’t normally attracted to cowboy crooners. In fact, by the sound of the screaming girls heard at Subterranean, we’re pretty sure the band was responsible for converting quite a few pop princesses into banjo loving broads. Experimental enough to feel fresh but traditional enough to feel familiar even to first timers, Dastardly is band that asserted itself as notable early in the game and now can enjoy the steady rise to local fame they’re guaranteed. ..—reviewsic.com……Dastardly is a Chicago outfit that plays americana music with just the right ratio of “sticky-sweet” to “fuckin’ shit up.” Every note is deliberate and controlled, but just barely masks an urgent and immediate sense of existential, frantic terror that must be slowly driving them mad. ….-am3r1cank1ds.tumblr.com…. ….Their indie-folk, Americana sounds is perfect for a 2010 Hoedown (meaning PBR and cigarettes). The band has no shortage of instruments including lap steel, dobro, or accordian. Their tunes have a top side of bluegrass, finger-lickin’ pickin’, but there’s always a seemingly modern undercurrent whether it’s the echo-y lead guitar line of “Excercises In Self Loathing” or the big, tribal beat outro of “Brief Thoughts On Death” ..—loudlooppress.com..

DAVE CORESH

With his mind as the pen and instrumental as the pad, Dave Coresh scribes melodies that bob heads, moves feet and affects the crowd with his powerful vibe. Appearing at any performance with the newest Jugrnaut store attire, short sleeved t-shirt bearing the signature shield and lightning bolt, fitted hat worn backwards and titled stylish on the side with mic gripped firm in his right hand, the crowd rocks with enthusiasm as his commanding Battle Rap style orchestrates their waving hands. As an MC, one must be able to Move the Crowd, and with smooth beats accompanying his distinctive flow, the crowd falls victim to his vibrant charisma. Such is the bravado of Dave Coresh. Proclaimed as the ‘Boy Wonder in the Flesh’, Dave Coresh hails from DC. He moved to Chicago to live with his aunt after his mother was stunted by drug abuse and father became impeded by an arrest. The roots of his musical influences stem from family ties, which have a history of Church Choir singers and band members jazzing to the beat of the Go-Go Music Movement. Drawn to Hip Hop by the competitive aspect of Battle Rap, the skills of Coresh developed through countless evenings Freestyling against an array of lyrical opponents. Surrounded by a sea of onlookers during these battles, when one opponent fell, the next rose only to share the same fate as the previous. It was the rush of the instance, the excitement of the moment combined with the enjoyment for the craft that fueled him. With intricate lyrics holding universal concepts that a wide range of listeners can groove to without hesitation, Dave’s goal is to spark emotions through the use of his words. Whether it is to help a person grow through a situation or influence another to do better, he brings a positive outlook on life to impact the listener. It’s been a year since Dave began to pursue a career in Hip Hop, and as his buzz grows, he stays humbled by the opportunity to spread his music. Living under the weight of the notion of Hip Hop being dead, he strives to be the leader of the second coming of the genre. A fan of music standing on stage, orchestrating the waving hands of the crowd as a passionate performer, his level-headed lyricism gives him hope that, in the future, the name Dave Coresh can withstand the test of time and become a stable within the history of Hip Hop.

DAVID COSTA

When you come from the middle of nowhere, it can sometimes seem like it’s going to be impossible to make it out alive. It was this feeling of helplessness that created the environment necessary for songwriter David Costa to craft his artform. Hailing from the Chicago suburbs of Northwest Indiana, Costa has built a reputation for delivering thoughtful hip-hop lyrics over a dynamic “genre free” soundtrack. In the process, creating an exciting live show unlike anything in music today and winning over diverse audiences every step of the way.

With inspirations ranging from Kanye West to Faith No More–from Eminem to The Used–from Michael Jackson to OutKast…the result is an aggressive verbal assault on modern day hip-hop. The lyrics are honest, the vocals have an original flow and delivery, and the music is a perfect blend of traditional hip-hop beats mixed with stylistic rock-n-roll melodies.

On His debut full length album ‘The Starving Artist’, Costa touches on a number of social, spirtual, and philosophical topics over the sound of 808 drums and an eclectic blend of live instrumentation. The result is a full-blown hip-hop concept album that tells the tale of an aspiring young songwriter, struggling to find his purpose in life and make a name for himself in the music industry. Complete with character development and plot twists, the songs read like a novel; and are in chronological chapter form. Additionally, ‘The Starving Artist’ is “Part II” of a trilogy of albums, leaving the listener anticipating the beginning of the story and also wondering how the story will end.

With a resume that includes the annual Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey, South by Southwest, Chicagos’ Q101 Jamboree, and The Vans Warped Tour; Costa has shared the stage with Artists ranging from industry favorites My Chemical Romance and Travie McCoy to independent Acts such as Reggie and The Full Effect and Chicago rap legend Twista. 2014 is looking to be a busy year for Costa as He continues to tour in support of His self-released debut, as well as write and record the follow up “prequel” to ‘The Starving Artist’. The future of hip-hop has arrived…and His name is David Costa !

D2G

D2G

Chicago Hip-Hop Props Award-Winner Anthony Di’Angelo Ingram, Jr. or “D2G” as he’s called in the Hip-Hop scene, is a laborer in music all around. Growing up on the southeast side of Chicago, 2G would always relate any life situation to a song that would describe his emotion at the time. Inspired by artists like Rakim, KRS-One, and Slick Rick, he began writing at age 11 and would later transform his writings into songs. Graduating from Hyde Park Academy in 2005, he would find himself enrolled into Columbia College Chicago, where he became fascinated by the artistic environment. This atmosphere would later introduce 2G to various artists and producers.

A focused emcee in his own right, D2G seeks to bring glory back to his hometown of Chicago and earn his rightful place among hip-hop’s elite. Since releasing his first solo project in 2011, The Blood Diamond Tape, and his first album in 2013, July 9th: A Cancer Story, D2G has been performing and promoting his music across the city. After releasing his critically acclaimed sophomore effort, Short Summers Long Winters, in 2015, D2G went on to win the Chicago Props Award for Best Male Emcee. His latest effort, The Next Hot Day, brings the emcee back to his storytelling roots as he produces the sequel to his first “audiofilm”. There seems to be end in sight for this emcee’s emcee.
