HOLY GRAIL
Formed in Southern California in 2008 when vocalist James Paul Luna and drummer Tyler Meahl diverged from Pasadena metal squadron White Wizzard and teamed up with San Diegan guitar hero Eli Santana, the band was called Sorcerer until it became clear that the moniker didn’t quite capture the rarefied nature of the members’ collective talents. Sorcerer became Holy Grail. The band became so unstoppable that California just couldn’t contain them and now, like their spiritual forefathers in Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Dio, Holy Grail are poised to bring their hook-laden shred anthems to an arena near you.
Holy Grail are heavy metal personified, possessing a seemingly infinite arsenal of mind-blowing riffs, skyscraping vocal melodies and devastating drum dynamism. Not mention the kind of six-string acrobatics and straight-up power-shredding that would make Yngwie Malmsteen chuck the proverbial goat in sweep-picking solidarity. “We shred and we’re serious about it,” Luna offers. “This is not a tongue-in-cheek thing. It’s not throwback or retro. Holy Grail is a modern band with a new twist on the best of old-school metal with death metal riffs, modern breakdowns and power-metal singing. We just tried to pick stuff from all our favorite bands and make the best blend of metal we could.”
But don’t take our word for it—or Luna’s. The fine folks at Decibel magazine knew exactly what they were talking about when they hailed HOLY GRAIL as “the most exciting prefix-free metal band to come out of L.A. in the last two decades.” The esteemed editors at UK’s Metal Hammer nominated the gentlemen of the Grail for the magazine’s “Best New Band” award at their annual Golden Gods ceremony before Holy Grail even had an album out. But a certain tall, handsome genius over at Thrasher summed it up best when he proclaimed, “Holy Grail are the reason that heavy metal will never die.”

Although there are many other thrash bands out there, there is one thing that sets HAVOK apart from the others. This band puts their own stamp on the genre by employing a more technical side of music, while maintaining the feel. HAVOK’s live show is where the band really catches peoples’ attention, with their non-stop energy level and their ability to get the audience involved. They are a must-see for any fan of live music!
HAVOK
HAVOK the thrash metal powerhouse reigning from Colorado formed in 2004. After two self-released albums, the band caught the attention of England’s Candlelight Records. Burn was released in early spring of 2009. Incorporating blisteringly fast guitar riffs, machine-like drumming, groovy bass lines, searing leads, and hard-hitting vocals, HAVOK is able to maintain that *punch-you-in-the-throat* style of music. Fast forward to 2011 and the Denver-based thrashers return with their second album. The band turns the heat up with new thrash anthems. Time Is Up immediately showcases the band’s highly skilled musicianship.Blistering guitar work once again highlights the album. Song standouts include album opener “Prepare for Attack,” “Fatal Intervention,” “Covering Fire,” and“Scumbag in Disguise.”

HAWKBIT
Unrelenting fast rock, with a constant melodic yell. It’s like punk because we like to say it is. It’s like pop because there are some really catchy melodies. It’s like emo because fuck us, we don’t derserve to live. It’s post-something because the song structures are too clever for our own good due to our lack of brain organizational planning skills. It’s like goth and industrial because we’re not either of those things. It’s Sex Positive because there are some dirty yet very polite boys in this band.

HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS
Hay Perro blends punk aggression and speed with Iron Maiden-esque guitar harmonies, with touches of prog and doom influences. Their debut full length ranges from the furious blast of “Vicious Beast” to the epic, multi-section closer “Eastern Ideas of Death.” Not quite metal, not quite punk, but appealing to fans of both.

HE IS LEGEND
Impulsive is a word that comes to mind when thinking about Wilmington, NC band He Is Legend. Their sound is best described as rock and roll although; it can be difficult to predict what direction their next album might take. Refusing to be pigeon holed into one sub genre, they choose to write songs that can be unique and polar opposites of each other, but still assuring you that you’re listening to He Is Legend. Pulling influences from bands like Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, they crafted an aggressive and faster sound with those defining elements.
The name He Is Legend is an adaptation of the 1954 book I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. After releasing their first EP in June 2004 entitled 91205, the band signed on with Christian based label Solid State Records which has fueled many debates among fans about whether or not they are a Christian group. While members of the band have claimed to be followers of Christ, He Is Legend has made it clear that they are not collectively a Christian band stating, “We are in no way a Christian band… We all enjoy music; we all enjoy playing our instruments, so if we had to be classified as anything it would be a ‘band’ band or ‘music’ band.” They released their full length albums I Am Hollywood and Suck out the Poison, which were followed by extensive touring in the United States and Europe with acts like Norma Jean, Atreyu, Chimaira, Dragonforce, and Killswitch Engage.
The group’s current line up of Schuylar Croom (vocals), Adam Tanbouz (guitar), Matt Williams (bass), Sam Huff (drums/percussion), and Denis Desloge (guitar), signed to Tragic Hero Records in 2009 to release It Hates You. The album was produced by ex-Filter guitarist Mitchell Marlow and Allen Jacob at Warrior Sound in Chapel Hill, NC, with additional production by Kit Walters. “The difference (with this album) is that we were the ones calling the shots,” says Croom. “It was a little more laid back and comfortable for us because we were in surroundings we were used to and had our friends with us. We were just making a record that we wanted to hear. As opposed to being out of our element and in a city we’re not used to, we were in a place we love. North Carolina is our home. It was easier for us to work there.” He Is Legend is currently working on a new full-length album that is being produced once again by Mitchell Marlow and will be mixed by Jim Wirt at Crushtone Studios. No release date has been scheduled.

HEMMINGBIRDS
Hemmingbirds is an indie pop rock band based out of Chicago, IL. The band began as a solo project of singer/guitarist/violist Yoo Soo Kim in the fall of 2009. The name is loosely inspired by Ernest Hemingway and a Fleet Foxes track that sings about hummingbirds and meadowlarks.
The recordings from Yoo Soo’s solo project expanded into what would ultimately become the band’s debut Death Wave released May 2010. They’ve also received radio play on Chicago’s NPR station, 93XRT, and opened for the emerging band Buke & Gase.
