The Midwest doesn’t necessarily seem like an obvious spot for an up-and-coming ska band. In fact, Indianapolis is worlds away from the crazy Kingston nightclubs and layered London streets that help craft the genre’s sound. Regardless of what the globes and maps say, The Circle City Deacons have made quite an impression from their Hoosier home base.
The core of the Deacons started playing together in Indianapolis pop-punk group The Latch Key Kids, which disbanded in 2008. Following the demise of the Latch Key Kids, keyboardist Craig Gorsline and bassist Joe Escamilla began to rediscover the off-beat sounds of ska, rocksteady and reggae. Once it was apparent that they had to start playing music again (and that it had to be ska), the band reconnected with Latch Key Kids’ guitarist Patrick Feeney and enlisted the help of Justin Smith on drums.
The band debuted as a hornless four-piece in Indianapolis in 2010. The Deacons had their work cut out for them, carving a niche in an often disjointed and ska-less local music scene. The band stuck it out, however, paying their dues while playing around central Indiana. The hard work paid off, though, as the band developed their sound as well as a fan base.
As the band played more and more, they caught the attention of a few horn-playing ska enthusiasts, namely Heath Schlatter (trumpet) and David Ragsdale (saxophone). With the full line-up and a full sound, the band really started attracting attention. Since 2011, the band has played with national and regional acts such as The Pinstripes, Blacklist Royals, The Toasters and Green Room Rockers, just to name a few.
Musically, Gorsline lays the groundwork for the band’s sound with his gravely vocals laid over his smooth organ playing. Coupled with an adroit rhythm section, the melodious horns form a fantastic sound that melds past, present and future. The island sounds of Peter Tosh and Toots and the Maytals are apparent in the Deacons’ tunes as are the revivalist sounds of The Slackers and The Toasters. While the Deacons have no reservations about acknowledging their influences, there is no doubt that they are pushing forward into a sound all their own.
Sharing a stage with bigger, more seasoned acts has helped the Deacons hone their songwriting skills beyond most expectations. After kicking around a demo for a year, the band finally settled down to record their debut record, Right With Time. Featuring twelve Deacon originals and offbeat, Rocksteady verison of Lee Dorsey’s “A Lover Was Born”, Right With Time is bound to become a cornerstone in the Midwestern DIY ska lexicon.
The Fuss is a dynamic ska, rocksteady, and early reggae band from Washington, D.C. Their sound pays tribute to the music of 1960’s Jamaica and the British Mod scene, while putting modern slant on these timeless styles. The group is comprised of 3-part female harmonies, a 3-piece horn section, and 4-piece rhythm section.
Since the band formed in 2014 and they’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with bands such as The Skatalites, The Toasters, The Pietasters, Eastern Standard Time, The Interrupters, Save Ferris, Steady 45’s, and many more.
The Fuss’s first full-length album “Ourselves” is now available on LP, CD, and Cassette. Visit our shop to pick-up a copy online.
Some artists become stars seemingly overnight, living out the dream that they’ve always wanted. Others are pushed to success by their circumstances and the people around them. Atlanta product Derez De’Shon is an example of the latter, opting to make music for his neighborhood to appreciate, only to find himself with a Billboard 100 hit and a gold plaque for his track “Hardaway.”
De’Shon’s career began with rapping for fun as a teen. “It started with just a love for music,” he tells XXL. “I used to rap, put some lil’ words together around the house, freestyle with my partners outside in high school.” As he got older, Derez rode through many hardships, including being homeless with his children while in his early 20s. “My family, my street family, my kids, the struggle kept me motivated. Being tired of going through what I was going through, seeing the same thing.”
His friendship with late Atlanta rapper Slim Dunkin was instrumental in Derez finding a way out through music. “That’s like my brother, like my big brother,” he says. “The relationship was genuine and organic, it was love before anything.” Derez still thinks of Dunk often, and made sure to keep his memory alive. “Every mixtape I do, I mention him. Every show I do, I mention him. My first piece of jewelry I bought, I got it engraved to say ‘Dunk We Did It.’” A flurry of mixtapes stretching back to 2013 helped Derez build his momentum, leading up to 2017, which would be his breakout year.
The success of his 2017 DJ Drama-hosted mixtape Pain, which was rereleased in a deluxe edition this year, was Derez’s true moment in the sun. “Hardaway” caught on with a multitude of crowds, as evidenced by it’s 76 million plus views on YouTube. He isn’t resting on his laurels either, as he’s chipping away at Pain 2 and working with other Georgia artists, including Lil Baby.

Building on a foundation of thrashing d-beat, they draw influences from a broad spectrum of aggressive styles including grindcore, crust, sludge, death metal, black metal, and noise rock. Whether contemplating like Kendrick Lamar or channeling the intensity of Mystikal, Dwynell Roland’s approach to music has always been rooted in humility and a sense of humor. In 2016, “Minnesota’s most relatable rapper” (City Pages) found himself on the biggest stages of his career: an opening slot on Prof Outdoors 3. Some stories birthed and illustrated in the hood never leave city limits. And for some, music is more than just an outlet. It’s an escape. Born and raised in North Minneapolis, Mac Irv’s gift for rhyming began at an early age, most of which he learned from his grandfather along with living across the street from Cornbread Harris, father of Grammy award winning producer Jimmy Jam. At 9 years old, Mac Irv started a rap group and was making rhymes in his basement.
His gift for music went undisclosed for many years as his talent for basketball required a full commitment. After receiving a scholarship to the University of Minnesota, Mac Irv exceeded athletic expectations, placing him as an All-Big Ten Player from 2006-2008. Graduating with a degree in Business Marketing, the Gopher player’s athletic ability was unknowingly deteriorating slowly. His professional career overseas was eventually cut short after a serious hip injury. Shortly after at the age of 25, Mac Irv became a father to a baby girl. Despite battling depression while simultaneously taking on new responsibilities of parenthood, Mac Irv’s passion for music was soon reignited.
With support from his Pilot Life Team Tre Adams and producer Willie Wonka, Mac Irv developed smooth, quick rap lines and metaphors reflecting his experience on the Northside, the ups and downs of relationships, and lessons extracted from sports. Things quickly progressed and his career as an artist was solidifying.
“Got Me Open” was released on Youtube as his first single, but it was “Hometown” that allowed him to ultimately represent for Minnesota, embodying the nickname, “Hometown Hero”. In 2014, Mac Irv toured with Rhymesters artist Prof and his single “The Cycle” was nationally featured on MTV Jams. During that same year, Irv was selected to perform at Soundset, in company with Nas, Wiz Khalifa, and 2 Chainz.
Continuing to be a voice for his community, his loyalty for Minneapolis is undimmed. After several projects and local shows consistently selling out, Mac Irv’s ambitions brought him to perform at South by Southwest. His mixtape, “Sincerely Mac Irv” was featured on DatPiff and received an immense amount of feedback from his fans – which are known as his “fam base”.
Exposing disparities in his neighborhood through lyrics, Mac Irv has earned a place in the Hip Hop arena of Minneapolis. Heavily affected by death and incarceration of friends throughout the years, he continues to persevere through the oppression that confronts his community by inspiring a little bit of everyone.

Wilder Sons was created on a humid back porch in South Florida in 2013 by indie scene veterans Brian Blount (Vox/guitar) and Jake Rubington (Vox/Guitar). Both experienced front men of previous touring bands, the two joined forces to construct a beachy alt-rock style that is stimulating the senses of the progressive alternative scene. Transcendent guitar riffs weave effortlessly between catchy melodies, upbeat bass lines, and complex drum progressions; all of which paint a captivating backdrop to Brian’s reminiscent lyricism.
Their 2014 self-titled EP created a strong local following helping the group land opening gigs with bands like The Story So Far, Copeland, Turnover, Further Seems Forever, and Mewithoutyou to name a few. In 2016, Wilder Sons, along with the help of their devoted fans, ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the release of their second EP, “Scatterbrain”. Since it’s release in November, Scatterbrain has been rapidly gaining the attention of Spotify listeners and Pandora playlists alike. It was also around this time that the group rounded out their line up with the addition of Dan Springs (Bass) and Nic Viens (Drums), both seasoned musicians who add a refreshing dynamic to the foursome. Wilder Sons continue to push the boundaries, creating a new sound that is pulsating through the prism of the Southwest Florida scene and beaming out to a national audience.

Aethere is a 4 piece metal band from the Bay Area in California. Throughout their career they have endured changes that would eventually shape them into the band they are today. Founded by their drummer Josh Slater in 2009, they went through various members before solidifying the current lineup consisting of: guitarist Chris Tognetti, vocalist James Patton, and bassist Evan Yoshino. Crushing music accompanied by heavy lyrics dealing with dissociation and depression , the band brings something new and honest to the realm of heavy music they fall into. Elements of blackened deathcore, syncopated breakdowns, technical death metal, and nods to hardcore; Aethere’s sound is fueled by raw emotion while refusing to follow any genre guidelines that may be presented.
