Coroner – the artisans of thrash metal
Playful, yet full of raw power; delicate and brutal at the same time; driving rhythms coupled with dizzying guitar solos … Coroner is all this and more. Is it thrash metal? Is it speed metal? Is it technical death metal? This Swiss band cannot be pigeonholed. It is unique … even after 30 years on the go.
The early 1980s was a tumultuous time in Zurich. This usually oh-so-quiet city on the River Limmat was seething with unrest. It was a time of protest marches and riots. Young people were fighting for the freedom and space to express themselves. The atmosphere was highly charged. It was against this backdrop that two bands emerged from the small Zurich metal scene determined to conquer the world: Coroner and Celtic Frost. They were hungry for new, fresh, original music, and decided to make it themselves.
Back then, the Coroner line-up was Tommy Vetterli aka Tommy T. Baron (guitar), Marky Edelmann aka Marquis Marky (drums), and Ron Broder aka Ron Royce (bass). The vocals on the band’s first demo tape (Death Cult) were provided by Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost. This was before Ron became the band’s vocalist.
Death Cult got Coroner a record deal with the German label Noise Records, which was at the time a force to be reckoned with when it came to discovering exciting new metal bands. The five studio albums Coroner made with Noise Records proved that it was so much more than a run-of-the-mill thrash metal band: R.I.P (1987) was unpolished high-speed metal, Punishment for Decadence (1988) was musically complex, No More Color (1989) and Mental Vortex (1991) demonstrated the band’s technically maturity, while Grin (1993) marked a shift towards a more straightforward sound with drive. Coroner also proved their mettle on stage with tours of Europe and the USA.
Coroner’s brand of metal is all about complex rhythms and intricate melodies coupled with outstanding technique. The band’s music is driven by Ron’s accurate bass sequences, which push his instrument to the limit of what is possible, and Marky’s drum patterns, that just cannot stick to the straight-and-narrow of four-four time. All of this underpins Tommy’s virtuoso guitar sequences, razor-sharp masterpieces with a neoclassical touch that earned him a reputation as one of the world’s best metal guitarists.
But this uniqueness was also a liability: the band was often underrated; most metal fans had no time for the artistic complexity of Coroner’s music. Tension arose between the band members. Their perfectionism and the resurgence of a desire to explore other musical styles drove the three men apart.
Coroner split after one last tour in 1996. They may not have performed with each other for 15 years, but they certainly were not inactive. Tommy Vetterli toured with Swiss pop star Stephan Eicher and
became a member of the German metal band Kreator. Marky joined Tom G. Warrior’s project Apollyon Sun and experimented with electronic music. Ron withdrew from the metal scene, occasionally playing bass in a variety of projects.
But the fans never forgot Coroner. In fact, the demand from concert organisers for Coroner to perform live again was so great in 2010 that it seemed the time was ripe for a reunion. Coroner went back into the rehearsal room and practiced their old songs with new vigour. What followed was a triumphant tour of the largest metal festivals on the planet: 30,000 people saw Coroner perform live at Hellfest in Clisson (France); Coroner also played Wacken in northern Germany, the Maryland Death Fest in Baltimore (USA), and Bloodstock Openair in England. To top it all, they even went on a musical cruise with 70,000 Tons of Metal. But it didn’t end there: they also played sell-out headliner shows in clubs right across Europe.
The trio was invigorated by its success. After three years and dozens of reunion concerts, Tommy Vetterli and Ron Broder were hungry: they wanted to write new songs and record a new album, 20 years after Grin. But Marky Edelmann was not on board. As far as he was concerned, his personal history with Coroner had come to a dignified end. After a farewell concert in Zurich, Marky left the band in February 2014 and was replaced by Diego Rapacchietti, drummer with 69 Chambers.
Autopsy and a new album: a legacy and a new beginning 2016 is the year of Coroner’s first release of the twenty-first century: Autopsy is a gift to fans packed with gems like a documentary on the history of the band, live footage from the reunion concerts, unpublished and rare archive material, as well as a best-of compilation. It is available as either a limited collector’s edition with 3 blu-ray discs and the compilation on vinyl with a signed gatefold cover or as a standard edition with three DVDs and a compilation CD.
In the spirit of an autopsy, the 100-minute documentary ‘Coroner – Rewind’ dissects the history of the band from 1985 to 2014. It begins with the early days of ‘Heavy Disco’ in the Zurich hinterland and covers everything that followed: the style-defining years at Noise Records, the band’s split, the reunion tour, and Marky Edelmann’s departure.
The documentary features previously unpublished archive material from the 80s and 90s: footage of the studio session where Celtic Frost singer Tom Warrior sang vocals for Coroner’s first demo, backstage footage from the reunion tour, and interviews with the band members, crew, fellow musicians, and contemporaries, including Tom G. Warrior and Martin Ain (Celtic Frost), Mille Petrozza (Kreator), Franz Treichler (Young Gods), Max Cavalera (Sepultura / Soulfly), Chrigel Glanzmann (Eluveitie), Stephan Eicher, Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth), and Chris von Rohr (Krokus).
All of them have one thing in common: they admire Coroner’s talent. Or, as Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth, puts it in the film: ‘Coroner taught me that playing hard and fast music doesn’t necessarily make you a crap musician. They showed me that it can be art at a very high level.’ For guitarist Tommy Vetterli, ‘Coroner – Rewind’ dug up some old memories: ‘For us, it’s like leafing through a family photo album: you relive all those moments, those highs and lows, all over again.’
The second Autopsy disc provides a cross-section of the reunion concerts from 2011 to 2014: live footage of 17 songs performed at Hellfest, the Maryland Death Fest, Bloodstock Openair, and other festivals and clubs. Autopsy also includes a number of treats in the form of videos of Coroner singles, a recording of the legendary ‘Thrashing East’ concert in East Berlin in 1990, rehearsal footage, and a snippet from Coroner’s very first concert in Zurich.
The future begins now: the new Coroner line-up with drummer Diego Rapacchietti has a record deal with Sony Music Switzerland and will release a new studio album in co-operation with Century Media in 2017. ‘In the 20 years since our farewell tour, we have matured musically,’ says Tommy Vetterli. ‘We now want to show what we can take from this experience in the form of new songs and new energy. We’re back. We really want this. And we’re ready for it.’
The results of the autopsy are in: Coroner is not dead. Coroner is very much alive.

Ravagers have been ripping up a dust storm of debauchery for nearly a decade. Dressed in leather and denim, the Filth City foursome may look like menaces to society, but rest assured, their ferocious blend of punk fury and sneering rock ’n’ roll nonchalance make them a threat to not just the laws of man, but the laws of nature. It’s easy to think of Ravagers as a group of rebel-rousing shit stirrers. Their songs evoke an attitude of manifest malfeasance. Lyrics often paint perilous, black landscapes akin to a Danzig wet dream. But at its core, Ravagers are here for a good time, and the brevity of their songs, influenced no doubt by late 70’s punk and early 80’s hardcore, means they won’t be here for long. No tomorrow? No problem! Rather than extinguish the rising flames of hell, these guys prefer to throw a Molotov cocktail and raise a Natty Bo.

Just a Mess is a three-piece band hailing from the windy city of Chicago. Formed in 2019, this band is a force to be reckoned with, as they combine the intense, emotionally charged sound of Deftones with the introspective lyricism of Brand New.
The band’s founding members, Tony Sarlo and Kyle Blais, first met in a drunk tank after a night out on the town. They quickly realized their mutual love for music and decided to form a band. After the departure of their original drummer, Cory Gray, Kevin Kovacevich joined the band on drums and quickly established himself as an essential part of Just a Mess.
Despite their name, Just a Mess is anything but chaotic when it comes to their music. Their sound is a precise and calculated blend of heavy, guitar-driven riffs and poignant, introspective lyrics. Their lyrics explore themes of loss, heartbreak, and nostalgia for a time that has passed.
While Just a Mess may be picky about who they interview with, they are more than willing to connect with their fans through their music. Tony Sarlo’s haunting vocals and intricate guitar work blend seamlessly with Kyle Blais’s pulsing basslines and Kevin Kovacevich’s thunderous drumming.
Just a Mess’s music is not for the faint of heart. It is an emotional journey that is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who listens. But for those who are brave enough to take the ride, they will find a band that is authentic, passionate, and unapologetically real.
Contrarian is a progressive death metal band from Rochester, New York, founded in 2012 by guitarist Jim Tasikas. The band is known for its progressive and catchy songwriting alongside a technical playing style.
Soreption is a technical death metal band from Sundsvall, Västernorrlands län, Sweden. Formed in 2005, they are best known for their fast melodies and sharp, groovy riffs. In 2013, Soreption was chosen among a list of acts selected to perform at The Summer Slaughter Tour.
Arguably the ultimate progressive metal band of their day, Atheist’s impossibly Byzantine death-jazz proved too advanced even for committed metalheads to stomach. Over the span of three albums admirably recorded in spite of crippling adversity, the band’s inventive but inaccessible style has earned them a lasting respect, but likewise compromised their chances of attaining widespread success.
Atheist started out as typical ’80s thrash metal band. Founded in 1984 by vocalist and guitarist Kelly Shaefer and drummer Steve Flynn under the name of Oblivion and then R.A.V.A.G.E (Raging Atheists Vowing A Gory End), their shuffling lineup only stabilized years later with the arrival of bassist Roger Patterson and guitarist Mark Sczawtsberg. Settling on the name Atheist, the band suddenly began evolving at a fast clip, their gradual path towards an extremely complex brand of death metal documented in a series of compilations and demo tapes along the way. With the arrival of guitarist Randy Burkey in 1988, Atheist secured a deal with Mean Machine Records and issued their first album Piece of Time the following year (when the label went bankrupt, the album was picked up by Active Records). An amazingly dense and challenging record, it’s head-spinning arrangements and dissonant riffing stumped most casual listeners but wowed critics with the sheer audacity of the band’s death-jazz. Tours of Europe, Canada, and the United States would follow, and Atheist had already begun work on a follow-up when tragedy struck. Returning home from a road jaunt supporting Swedish doomsters in February 1991, their van suffered a horrific crash, Patterson dying in Shaefer’s arms by the roadside. The trauma was almost too much for Atheist to overcome but they eventually decided to carry on, and with session work by bassist Tony Choy, the Unquestionable Presence LP was released later that year. Possibly their finest hour, it not only served as a tribute to Patterson, but also managed to perfect the debut’s seething intensity into an even sharper focus. Darren McFarland became their new touring bassist, but following just a few local dates, Shaefer decided to focus on his more rock-oriented side project Neurotica. But Atheist still owed Active Records one more album, so Shaefer, Burkey, and a returning Choy joined with guitarist Frank Emmi and drummer Marcel Dissantos to record 1993’s Elements. Rising to the challenge, Shaefer and company bolstered the use of melody and experimented with a wide array of different musical styles, resulting in a remarkably strong effort considering the band’s hand had been forced in the first place. Then, their responsibilities fulfilled, Atheist finally disbanded and Shaefer resumed his work with Neurotica, although 21st century re-formation rumors have surfaced on occasion. ~ Mike DaRonco & Ed Rivadavia, Rovi

The album was hailed with rave reviews and the group went on to do 2 tours in the United States in support of the record. Wasting no time, the band finished writing and recording their second album, “Fearsick,” which was released July 15th, 2022, once again on Kling/Nordberg’s Listenable Insanity Records.

Playfully perilous, like a paper tiger stalking a paper gazelle through the maze on the back of a cereal box. Toy Dynamite can brighten your day or break your heart. It’s all a matter of where you place your attention.
On their 2022 debut EP, “Sour Sugar,” they’ve perfected this recipe. 1 cup of alt country, 8 oz of indie folk, 3 tbsp of art pop, a pinch of jazz, twee and shoe gaze. The blues to taste. Plate and garnish with some parsley.
Multi-instrumentalist, Shawn Connors (Last False Hope/The Dirty Generals) & Ukitarist, Debbie Jean McGovern (Blue Ribbon Glee Club) make a wonderfully complimentary songwriting duo. Their voices blend together like adult beverages with tiny umbrellas. Make it a double; pun intended.
“Boston born Chicago based based post-punk collective Oddysseys are making a big splash with the release of their brand new album titled “Odd Behavior”.
The four-piece consists of Christian Treon, Paul DiRico, Josh Corbin, and Mark Pangilinan. The group’s sound is a dark, bleak mixture that is intriguing and mystifying when you first take a listen, as the band’s uses a combination of creative musical measures to keep the audience’s attention span at bay here.
They seem to be making a deep impact when it comes to wowing the listeners. While the band’s sound doesn’t have flashy melodies or catchy hooks, the band’s creative resolve will definitely come into play when creating your impression on this local group, which is blossoming into something very special. An intriguing group that is well worth of taking a deeper listen to.”

Joe Sib, co-founder and co-conspirator of Side One Dummy Records for 25 years, has continued to climb up the ranks of the comedy scene. Joe released his first comedy record, Joe Sib Nowhere Near the Top, in April 2017 which debuted #3 on the Billboard’s Comedy Chart. From the 1980s punk scene to millennium parent, Joe’s comedy takes you on a manic, ride from growing up in the era of “safety last”, and into the present, as he tries to helicopter parent without a license.
After throwing himself into the punk and skate underground of his California hometown, Joe’s band Wax was signed to a major label as part of the early ’90s breakthrough of punk rock into the mainstream. He co-founded an indie label, SideOneDummy, that signed such now-iconic bands as Flogging Molly and the Gaslight Anthem. Turning his behind-the-music stories from the road into a one-man show led to touring as a stand-up comic, which led to such highlights as his recent tour with Metallica, in which he and comedian Jim Breuer created a show that re-defined the term “opening act.” With every new twist and turn in his path, Joe has been left wondering “How did I get here?”
Best known as a guitarist and vocalist for the punk band Rancid, Lars Frederiksen has been a major player in the California punk scene since the ’90s, working not only with his bands Rancid and Lars Frederiksen & the Bastards, but doing production work with Dropkick Murphys, Agnostic Front, Marky Ramone, and many others.
Frederiksen first achieved notoriety playing with the U.K. Subs on their 1991 U.K. tour. He joined Rancid in 1993, and made his recording debut with them on their second album, Let’s Go. While still a member of Rancid, Frederiksen got a side band together, called Lars Frederiksen & the Bastards, and released that band’s first album in 2001. Their second album, Viking, saw the light of day in 2004.
November 2021 saw the release of Frederiksen’s debut solo project entitled “To Victory,” a 6 song EP with 3 accompanying music videos. Frederiksen has announced a tour around the EP in March and April 2022.

Ed Towns has a real love and passion for comedy. Throughout his life, he’s always admired true professionals with a gift for invoking their ideas to a crowd through humor. This was never a reality for Ed until his high school english teacher, comedian and mentor Bill Gorgo opened his eyes during a class about stand-up comedy. It took several years but Ed’s courage finally came to the forefront and he hit the stage for the first time and instantly fell in love. Now Ed entertains and makes people laugh with his cynically honest views on relationships, current events and his family. Nothing is off limits as audiences get a peak into Ed’s life and all the hilarity it ensues. Ed has opened for the likes of Chris Redd (SNL) Felonius Munk ( ABC For Life) and Josh Johnson (The Daily Show). Ed now is a producer of Comedians You Should Know, a 14 year staple in the Chicago Comedy scene.

On their sophomore album Preserved in Torment, Olympia WA’s doomed death metal unit MORTIFERUM push their penchant for dark, depraved, and disgusting dirges even further out into the periphery. Picking up where they left off with their Profound Lore debut Disgorged from Psychotic Depths, MORTIFERUM continue to mine the poisonous quagmire of classic American death metal, the warped visions of Finnish death metal, and the suffocating lurch of funeral doom for inspiration, but the resulting six tracks on Preserved in Torment operate on a larger scale, both in musical scope and in sheer crushing weight.
