Sunny War enlivens traditional folk and blues by freshening her musical attack and writing lyrics that reflect 21st century concerns. Her first album, “Worthless”, arrived in 2014, and she continued to gain attention as she built up a cult following that crested with the release of 2018’s “With the Sun”.
Born Sydney Lyndella Ward to a single mother in Nashville, the singer/songwriter spent her childhood moving around the United States with her parent, spending significant time in both Nashville and the Detroit suburb of Rochester. During this time, she learned to love a wide variety of music, picking up the guitar at the age of 13. After she spent a rough period combating substance abuse and poverty, she gravitated to blues and folk and relocated to California settling in Venice Beach.
Adopting the performing name Sunny War, she’d sometimes moonlight with her punk side band Anus Kings, but it was her folk-blues showcased on a self-released album that began to gain notice from local scenesters – including critics at LA Weekly. After a few years, she released her official debut, “Worthless”, which appeared in 2014. A second independent record, “Red White and Blue”, arrived in 2016.
In 2018 Sunny War released, via Hen House Studios, “With the Sun”, After that album, she moved from Venice Beach to downtown Los Angeles, quickly delivering her next LP also on Hen House “Shell of a Girl”, the following year. Her critically acclaimed EP “Can I Sit With You” premiered in 2020.
The year is 2021. America is still fighting its way through an ongoing pandemic, currently fueled by the ignorance of millions who have decided science isn’t good enough for them. Countless lives have been lost or disrupted by an inefficient government loaded with corrupt politicians, egged on by snake oil salesmen who are inexplicably given nightly platforms on cable TV or allowed to spread their disinformation through social media. Make no mistake: Rome is burning. We are fiddling.
Pissed off yet? So is The Last Gang. This California punk quartet had big plans for 2020, with a seemingly endless string of tour dates keeping them on the road in support of their Fat Wreck Chords debut, Keep Them Counting. Crowds were getting bigger. Sing-alongs were getting louder. Spirits were getting higher. The only problem? The band was trying to write a new record simultaneously, and it wasn’t going well.
“Our downfall is we want to tour a lot, but it’s sometimes hard for us to write because it takes so much out of me,” begins frontwoman Brenna Red. When the world came to a standstill in March 2020, it was actually a blessing in disguise for Red. She could finally focus on everything happening outside of their tour van — and she quickly realized it wasn’t pretty.
“Because COVID happened, I was allowed to not rush, and we stepped back and re-wrote songs,” she explains. “Then I went to Fat Mike’s to write with him, and he challenged me to write more Clash-influenced reggae. I listened to London Calling to get inspired, but I think Joe Strummer once said if you want to be inspired, don’t listen to your idols — listen to your idols’ idols. So I also listened to a lot of Toots And The Maytals and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and a ton of Trojan Records compilations.”
One listen to Noise Noise Noise, and you’ll discover a band who has not only pushed their musical boundaries in new and unexpected ways, but a lyricist in Red who has unlocked a new side of herself, spitting barbs both personal and political at whoever might listen. We’re obviously punk at our core,” she says. “People expect to hear something, and that can become tedious and somewhat boring. But when you throw somebody a curveball, if they hate it, that’s fine. But more than likely, they’re gonna go, ‘What is this?’ and it’ll pull them more into the album.”
Noise Noise Noise is nothing if not full of curveballs. The album opens with the “Guns Of Brixton”-esque title track, the first of the album’s many forays into guitar upstrokes and elastic basslines. The next curveball comes in the very next track, “WFTW,” the rare punk song that’s four minutes long and feeling a little bit like Searching For A Former Clarity-era Against Me!with Red cramming as many syllables into her verses as humanly possible. It’s also one of many new songs elevated by lead guitarist Ken Aquino, making his recorded debut with the now-quartet.
“Ken is a great lead guitar player, but my huge thing I love about Ken is at his core, he’s a melody man — he can sing pretty,” she gushes. “He adds so much to our band.” Aquino also used to work in the same studio as producer Cameron Webb (Motörhead, Sum 41), who just so happened to be behind the boards for Noise Noise Noise (which was also co-produced by NOFX’s Fat Mike and Useless ID’s Yotam Ben Horin). Red was thrilled to reunite with Webb, who previously produced Keep Them Counting. “I know he’s not going to let me sound bad,” she says. “He’s going to push me.”
Look no further than “Shameless,” a true gem of the album, a melodic punk banger with Red turning in a career-best vocal performance. The curveballs keep coming deep into the tracklisting, with the sludgy 6/8 tune “Intelligence Is A Plague.” In it, Red fires salvo after salvo at the ignorant masses as well as the publications that prey upon them (marking what is probably the first time alt-right “news” outlet Breitbart has been name-checked in a song).
“It was inspired by this overwhelming feeling of ‘Why aren’t we listening to the people who can tell us how to fix these huge problems?’ COVID, climate change, you name it. To me, it’s like, ‘I don’t know what to do, so I’m going to listen to you.’ But those people don’t want to be humble. They’d rather be ignorant and feel like they’re right.”
This gets to the crux of Noise Noise Noise: These songs speak to her, and she hopes they speak to you, too. “I write music just to be alive,” she concludes. “I hope there’s something that can be taken from it to make you feel that electricity inside of yourself, whether happiness, pain, bittersweet memories… Just pick apart the art and put it inside of your own life.”

To record their third album, Blink-182 turned to veteran punk rock producer Jerry Finn, who previously worked on Green Day’s breakthrough album Dookie (1994). Enema was the band’s first album to feature second drummer Travis Barker, who replaced original drummer Scott Raynor.

Ethan Lee McCarthy will perform at Roadburn 2022 under the moniker of Spiritual Poison; a new creative outlet that has morphed out of what was Many Blessings. Having identified a creative stream that was somewhat distinctive from the discordant harsh noise of Many Blessings, and that didn’t flow into his work with Primitive Man, McCarthy christened it Spiritual Poison.
The DIY ethic remains, as does the bleak soundscapes that seem wired into his DNA, only this time they’re more focussed. With themes that explore the dichotomy between city living and mankind’s relationship with nature, overlaid with the juxtaposition of the digital and spiritual worlds, Spiritual Poison has a lot of ground to cover. Although the output is shrouded in a hazy otherworldliness, McCarthy doesn’t shy away from channeling his experiences of being a person of colour living in modern day America, the violence, and the end-times narratives that permeate daily life.
As well as performing his own solo Spiritual Poison set, McCarthy will also join Full of Hell for a special performance of their Garden of Burning Apparitions album. Both shows will highlight the maturing sound of an experimental artist eager to explore the outer reaches of his artistry.

From modest, humble beginnings, ARREIS knew somewhere deep down that her circumstances were stifling. Upon moving to Nashville, she was ready to finally evolve into the persona she had always dreamed of. With role models such as Lady Gaga, ARREIS knows how to both create an excellent concept record and dazzle audiences at a live show.
The concept of “synesthesia” was introduced to ARREIS in college when she was writing her first record Blindside. When asked to describe the album, she would always use color-based terms, and overwhelminly, Blindside was associated with various shades of purple. From soft, nostalgic lavender to the bruises of violet, Blindside demonstrates the idea that being vulnerable and opening up to people are some of the hardest acts to accomplish.
In her next record Vices, ARREIS takes on the human condition and dives deeply into the issue that everyone has dealt with at some point in their lives – the fact that everyone has a little darkness. From fiery, bright reds to muted, sullen maroons, the red era is ready to make a dramatic mark on the world of pop music.

His songs explore many of the issues and realities of life during this age of technology, information and horrific upheaval. Skoller, known for his fiery and engaging performances, combines passionate harp playing and singing with original song writing and prodigious production skills.

Tim Larson’s stark, often blunt lyrics and weathered baritone shares similarities to Michael Gira (Swans, Angels of Light) and Mark Lanegan, there are also generous shades of hazy shoegaze guitar and moody gothic overtones wedded to song structures that are pure American folk/blues at heart. It’s no surprise that Larson’s varied influences connect the dots between Son House and Bauhaus.

It’s been ‘All Gas No Brakes’ for SONNY since sharing his 9-track mixtape in February. Marked by co-signs from Chicago creative forces like Andrew Barber, LONEWOLF and Lyrical Lemonade among others, the “KILL BILL” artist’s sets are as lively and enigmatic as his music. Opening for renowned artists such as Dro Kenji, Midwxst and more, SONNY’s creative style thrives by staying “RISKY” — referencing his ‘AGNB’ hit with LONEWOLF’ — above all. A true descendant of Chicago’s drill roots, SONNY is at his best when in front of his home crowd.

“Horrible are the Chicago answer to the nostalgic raucous bliss of the 80’s Indie Rock circuit. Hard rocking, melodic and undeniably chaotically beautiful, what’s not to love about that? If Frank Black and Richard Hell had an amphetamine love child it would sound something not too distant to this.” -Dan Stothard, Musically Fresh

You’ve probably heard “guitar music is dying” or something like that a dozen times over the past 20 years, but please, keep your voice down and don’t tell 96 Cougar. The Chicago-based four piece’s only rule is “it has to rock,” and that’s what they’ve been doing since 2019. New Noise Magazine describes them as having “a touch of The Replacements and Hüsker Dü with their nostalgia-tinged, ‘80s-style pop punk with gorgeous melodies,” two comparisons they’ll gladly take and parlay into an SST Records deal, provided they can find a time machine and 1986-appropriate outfits. The band has a full length record titled The Finest Crime slated for release in mid-2023.
