M13

M13

M13 is a Chicago-based, 13-piece ensemble, whose original compositions and arrangements by saxophonist/bandleader Aaron McEvers defy common convention and classification. Jazz may be at its core, but this is no swing band. The amalgamation of styles within their sound is varied and unapologetic. Original compositions are somewhat programmatic, evoking a sense of storytelling through melody-driven arcs, fresh orchestration and improvisation. This recipe yields a surprisingly accessible sound, appealing to listeners with a variety of musical tastes. At times subtle and delicate, at others wonderfully aggressive, M13’s music and musicianship has set them apart, establishing a style of their own. Word of mouth from their residency at Quenchers Saloon grabbed the attention and acclaim of Chicago Public Radio’s 848 show and CL-TV’s popular “Metromix” show, who both featured M13 on their programs.

LOVELY HOUSES

LOVELY LITTLE GIRLS

Lovely Little Girls is an avant-rock band led by artist Gregory Jacobsen and bassist Alex Perkolup. Using Jacobsen’s grotesque paintings as a basis, they write theatrical suites that morph from of-kilter dance anthems to punishing and ridiculous prog. Influenced by artists such as Fred Frith, Magma, The Residents and Captain Beefheart, Lovely Little Girls moves between No-Wave, Rock-in-Opposition prog, metal and free jazz. Initial simple musical motifs quickly deform into charges of odd harmony and tangled polyrhythms; yet it is grounded in a love for catchy melodies. Jacobsen’s syllable-stuffed cut-and-paste prose adds to the absurdity with lyrics about over-ripe food, incompetent sex and undignified death.

Lyon and the Notary not only deliver a fresh new sound, but they also have a gripping, heartwrenching backstory filled with hardships, tragedy, and perseverance.

“My parents weren’t around much,” frontman Gabriel Lyon reminisces. “I’d pretty much have to fend for myself. I guess you grow up pretty fast when your parents are only around on the weekends and after 5pm on weekdays.”

Struggling to cope with the absence of his parents in his life, Lyon turned to drugs to fill the void. By the age of 18, he was smoking marijuana cigarettes almost once a month, often times inhaling. “Everybody has a way of dealing with their problems,” Lyon explains. “Unfortunately, the way that I chose just brought me down deeper into the depths of hardship and tragedy.”

“He was in too deep,” drummer Andy Taylor recalls.

Drugs weren’t the only factor in Lyon’s wreckless, anything goes lifestyle. Drummer Andy Taylor recalls that while driving, Lyon would sometimes go almost 15 miles over the preferred speed limit. “We would all be like, ‘Gabe, slow down,’” Taylor recalls. “But that was just the way he rolled; living life in the fast lane. Nobody could slow him down. Not even authority.”
