Hailing from Tacoma, Washington, NOi!SE is one of the flag bearers one of the new wave of Oi!. True to its name, NOi!SE’s boundless energy along with its unyielding message has allowed the band to build a feverish and devoted fanbase.
True to form, the band’s new full-length “The Real Enemy” is undoubtedly going to be hailed as a timeless (musical) social commentary. Its raucous sound, some equally profound lyrics, and a really spectacular and fitting layout, highlights what NOi!SE is all about. Complete with riveting drums, insane bass lines, great leads, and a true verbal assault, this album reinforces that these guys really have something important to say, and a unique and powerful way to deliver it!
Bringing in some friends to help with the barrage, the story gets even more colorful; with additional vocals on “SPD” by Gordy Carbone (THE FORGOTTEN), on “The War Inside” by THE INTERRUPTERS, and on the title track, “The Real Enemy”, by Al Barr (DROPKICK MURPHYS/THE BRUISERS). With so many voices helping NOi!SE sing and scream this new installment of their passionate manifesto, “The Real Enemy” is bound to make waves, and turn heads.
While touring full-time is pretty much off the table due to family obligations and Matt Henson’s role in the US Army, NOi!SE is certainly planning to back up this record with as many live shows, in as many places, as possible. Requests have been coming in droves. Plans to attack both US coasts, as well as Europe are coming together, and likely to surround the release, and flow well into 2017. Anyone who’s seen them live knows that this is reason enough to get excited – but just wait ’til you hear the record!!
Original American OI! and street punk
The phrase “Space is the place” has long had multiple meanings for Chris Greene. These are, of course, the immortal words of jazz visionary Sun Ra, whose expansive influence shines bright on the tenor saxophonist. Space as a musical concept figures into Greene’s uncluttered playing and arranging as well.
And SPACE is the name of the Evanston, Illinois club that is Greene’s home away from home. In fact, the Evanston native lives only five minutes away. Having it so close has been a great comfort during the stressful days of the pandemic.
“It’s our favorite club, a great place to play,” he says. For him, the state of the art venue is also a great place to record. Though much of PlaySPACE 2: Play Harder, his latest stellar effort with his longstanding quartet, was recorded there before the coronavirus struck, the high spirits and vibrancy of the performance – and the interaction with his devoted fans – speaks volumes on how important live shows are for artist and audience alike.
“We did a few streaming performances, but together as a group, not one of those synced remote recordings where we all played our parts separately. We’re the kind of band that leaves fingerprints on each other’s playing, especially when we play live – that’s when we’re at our best. When it’s been possible, we’ve played some rooms with limited capacity, and we’ve also played a lot of backyard parties. People have been so happy to hear us. A lot of them forgot how much live music meant to them.”
It will come as no surprise to fans of the super-eclectic Chris Greene Quartet, featuring pianist Damian Espinosa, bassist Marc Pianeand drummer Steve Corley, that Play Harder draws from a wealth of sources. This is a band shifts easily from blues and swing to funk and hip-hop to rock and reggae. Previous albums have featured tunes by Madonna, John Coltrane, Sting, Charles Mingus and lounge music maestro Martin Denny.
On Play Harder, Greene and company turn their attention to classic Duke Ellington, country legend Hank Williams and fusion/smooth jazz great George Duke. The quartet recorded speedy versions of Ellington’s “Caravan” and Williams’ “You Win Again” early in its existence. This time, the band takes time to reflect on and deepen their interpretations.
“Caravan,” featuring Greene on soprano, opens on a moody note and unfolds in spacious, clear-eyed fashion before intensifying with the leader’s joyfully intense playing. “You Win Again” is a wonderful vehicle for Espinosa, whose soulful playing channels Ray Charles’s crossover version on Modern Sounds in Country Music. Greene mostly plays things close to the vest on tenor. “I cut loose a little in the end, but there was no call for flamboyance,” he says. “It was better to be in the moment.”
Duke’s soaring, Weather Report-ish “Omi (Fresh Water),” from the late keyboardist’s breakthrough album, Reach for It, is a great showcase for Greene’s sweet-toned soprano. The performance opens with a lightly textured percussion solo by Corley, whose flexibility in handling time schemes, Greene says, is “like if Jack DeJohnette and Questlove had a baby.”
Play Harder also boasts some strong originals. “Samba fu Maga” is a Brazilian-style original by Greene. And “Divers” is a ripping postbop workout written by Piane, whom Greene characterizes as “a combination of Ray Brown and Paul Chambers.”
Before launching into “Divers,” Greene jokingly warns the audience that it might be too intense for some audience members, advising sensitive listeners to take a bathroom break. In including spoken introductions, Play Harder harkens back to time when that was a standard feature of live albums. One of his big influences, Cannonball Adderley, was great at that.
He took up the saxophone at age 10, and began studying it seriously when he was 16, “playing the hell out of a blues pentatonic scale.” He mainly played alto saxophone in the well-regarded Evanston High School Wind and Jazz Ensemble, as well as with local bands including a rock unit called Truth. “They were into Sting and I was eager to be their Branford [Marsalis],” he said. Years later, he played in a Dave Matthews cover band.
At Indiana University, Greene studied under revered music educator David Baker and the much-admired jazz studies department chair Thomas Walsh. “It was a great experience for me,” he says. “I was a kid with a lot of natural talent, but with a lack of discipline. I learned how to practice, how to break things down, how to solve problems.”
Returning to Chicago in 1994, he continued his education by reaching out to established artists including genius innovator Steve Coleman. “He was hard-headed in his determination to play music his way,” says Greene. “It was a huge eye-opener for me how he put things together.”
Greene also got a major boost from Coleman’s mentor, Chicago tenor legend Von Freeman, as a performer at one of his famous jam sessions. “He didn’t know me from Adam, but he was very encouraging. He said, ‘Hey, I hear what you’re trying to do. Keep at it.’ That meant so much.”
Partly as a personal challenge to catch up with a mother lode of modern jazz history, Greene began concentrating on tenor saxophone. He formed New Perspective, a band that released two albums (On the Verge, 1998, and Jazz, 2004), and played in a wide assortment of jazz, soul, pop and prog-rock groups. Among the notable artists he has hooked up with over the years are Common, the Temptations, Brazilian soul star Ed Motta and Andrew Bird.
With Play Harder, the Chris Greene Quartet has released nine albums, including three volumes in its live Playtime mixtape series; the double album Music Appreciation, which notably includes the Yellow Light Orchestra’s cover of Martin Denny’s “Firecracker;” Boundary Issues, which featured three guest artists, saxophonist Marqueal Jordan, percussionist JoVia Armstrong and guitarist Isaiah Sharkey, and the live PlaySPACE.
“I have a hard time staying in place,” Greene says. “I don’t know my place, I guess, which is why I’m always stepping outside of the so-called boundaries. With the music I like, I just can’t help thinking, what would it be like if I did this, or this?”
With his consistency over such a long stretch of time, and his quartet’s being chosen as Chicago’s Best Jazz Band in a Chicago Reader poll, Greene has shown no signs of letting positive feedback go to his head. A people’s artist who has generously offered free downloads to fans, he knows the key to longevity is to keep doing what the album title says: Play Harder. Even in these difficult times, you can count on the Chris Greene Quartet doing just that – whenever and wherever the opportunities to do so arise.
From the kitchen of the original King Crimson R&D fraKctal units, please let us welcome the new incarnation of tu-NER.
tu-NER, in its most recent incarnation, is a musical trio comprised of Trey Gunn, Markus Reuter, and Pat Mastelotto, that celebrates the music of the Double Duo era (1998 to 2003) of King Crimson, and the bands TU (Mastelotto and Gunn), KTU (Mastelotto, Gunn, and accordionist Kimmo Pohjonnen), TUNER (Mastelotto and Reuter), TUNISIA (Mastelotto and thereminist Pamelia Stickney), The ProjeKcts (featuring Gunn and Mastelotto as well as other KC members) and Stick Men (Mastelotto, Reuter and King Crimson’s stickist Tony Levin).
tu-NER will perform their original music, improvs and honor as well their King Crimson/ProjeKcts DNA, as well as also bring to the stage some of the material produced by TU and TUNER during the past two decades. The music of those projects is known for being innovative yet accessible in nature, drawing on elements of rock, jazz, prog, funk, and other genres.
All the different influences coming together through these three artists are notable for their endlessly creative approach to music, and for the highly skilled musicianship of the players involved. The music produced by all these precedent projects is highly rewarding for those who are willing to listen with an open mind. After three decades of partial collaborations in pairs, and two decades since Trey introduced Pat to Markus, they have created pieces like Face, Absinthe, Pole, Műűt, Untamed Chicken, Flinch, Fandango, and Deception of the Thrush, all having become part of the classic neo-progressive rock catalogue of the 21st century. Together with staples from the King Crimson songbook such as EleKtriK, Level Five, Vrooom Vrooom, and FraKctured, all co-written by members of this outfit, these three amazingly talented friends guarantee an evening of mind-expanding music of the highest standards of virtuosity, innovation, and melodicity.
Of course, the creative impulse of these three musos would never be fully satisfied by simply revisiting their back catalogues, as if it were a mere trip down memory lane. Far from it, audiences will be treated to new pieces, as well as their characteristic improvisations, which, instead of consisting of simply jamming and noodling, in their case always comprise “instant compositions,” where the three musicians are constantly listening to each other with their ears and with their souls, in the telepathic fashion of a true R&D small intelligent unit. Because Trey, Pat and Markus are the best musicians at creating magic musical concoctions on the spot, away from the rock or jazz traditional rules of improvisation.
Hailing from the mountains of Los Andes, Venezuela, NYC heavy psych-grunge outfit Joudy (“Howdy”) synthesize dissonant melodies, dark tones, and hypnotic rhythms into a sound somehow both austere and lush, evocative of Deftones, QOTSA, and Nirvana. Displaced by political unrest in their home country, cousins Diego Ramirez (Vocals/Guitar), Gabriel Gavidia (Bass) and Hulrich Navas (Drums) were reunited in the U.S. in 2019 and have since built a well-earned reputation for their explosive live performances, at contrast with the introspective and esoterically dense lyricism that has become their signature. Their first full length release since reforming in the U.S., Joudy’s forthcoming third LP, Destroy All Monsters, “marries their history with the impossible challenges they’ve overcome both personally and professionally” (Wonderland Magazine). Destroy All Monsters is an invitation into oblivion and a hand reaching through the dark to pull you back out— a darkly atmospheric meditation on the hero’s journey and the resilience of the human spirit. Destroy All Monsters drops June 2023 via Trash Casual.

Metal band from Grand Rapids, Michigan formed in 2017. It’s fast, loud, and fucking heavy, so be ready to bang your head when we come to your town.
Oozing out of a sewer and blending with street muck, Anti-Sapien was born in the chaos of quarantine boredom with a need for crusty slam. Releasing a demo and playing shows almost immediately, as a 3 piece, featuring Richard Aucecema and Blake Charlton (Ramming Speed, Bones Brigade, Slashers, Shredded) the name was released into the scene. Quickly recruiting axeman Nathan Rand (Dissident Corpsepile) to fill out the lineup the band opened for the likes of Morta Skuld, Knoll, Yatra, Somnuri, Immortal Suffering, Demiser, Rawtopsy, Sentient Horror, Bonginator, Cloak, & Animals Killing People to name a few and showing they can fit in with any kind of heavy. A demo track was even played on air by Dean Rispler’s “records of ruin” show via Gimmeradio several times! The band made a lineup change when founding member Jeff Monge (Dieja, Vindicta) left the band and Alex Fewell (Black Mass, Scaphism) joined in on drums. Rehearsing like mad the band managed to lock in and record a 10 song full length in under 6 months! Recorded by Jamie Gazzero (Church Burn) and mastered by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust). Also featuring Joseph Kreyvko (Bury Your Dead, Edict) as well as Dave Suzuki (Churchburn, Vital Remains) this vicious slab sounds like d-beaten, crusty mold covered death metal with nods to punk as well as slam. The combination is as infectious and catchy as it is brutal and chaotic. Looking forward the band is excited to already be working on new material as they plan their summer tour!
Ohio-born songwriter Nick Wilkinson draws from his rural upbringing to deliver unapologetically on wanderlust and love. Wilkinson is known for his high energy and engaging performance that has been known as “theater rock” in some circles and Out of the Blue called them: “A touch of Cash fused with early 90’s Barenaked Ladies style rock.”
The Buffalo Ryders – singer-guitarist Joe Risdon, drummer Mike Lupica, bassist Mike Coduto hail from Akron, OH. Known for their blend of raw, riff-heavy alternative rock, the band is slated to tour the midwest in support of their sophomore album “Going Nowhere”.
Risdon and Lupica founded the band with their debut EP “Egghead” (2019) followed up by their debut full-length album “Where the Liars Go” (2021) and sophomore album “Going Nowhere” (2022). More information on The Buffalo Ryders can be found on social media and at www.thebuffaloryders.com.
Mizmor is a one-man heavy music exploration that began in 2012 as a way of dealing with the mental and spiritual anguish I, A.L.N., feel as a person. More specifically, the content behind the project is that of the existential – primal and innate musings about cause, purpose, self, and god. It is the search for light and truth, or the fact that there is none. It comes from an embittered, burned, confused, and broken heart. It is the fight for survival when reason and foundation has turned to nothingness. It is the crashing down of towers of falsehood and the freedom that comes through a certain kind of grief. Ultimately, Mizmor is the manifestation of my long-felt depression, and neither have an end in sight.
Columbia, South Carolina act Your Spirit Dies is determined to set the record straight on metalcore. Formed in 2019 and making their recorded debut on 2020’s The Process of Grief, they call back to the halcyon days before metalcore was just hardcore’s more popular but markedly less cool younger sibling. Instead of watered down, radio-ready choruses and questionable fashion choices, Your Spirit Dies delivers deft, darkly melodic riffing and surgically precise, crushing breakdowns. Taking cues from Gothenburg melodeath inspired acts like Undying and Arkangel, the band understands the power inherent in the form when it’s done right. There are enough harmonized leads and triplet breakdowns here for even the most rigid metalcore purist to take note. But with modern sensibilities and the power of hindsight in their toolkit, this is a fresh take that is just as likely to attract new fans to the genre as it is to impress old ones. This isn’t a rehash, but a reimagining. A peek into an alternate universe where metalcore went left at the fork instead of right, eschewing commercial appeal in favor of authenticity. Your Spirit Dies is not just what metalcore could’ve been—It’s what it should be.
TITHE is a Portland, Oregon based trio that constructs an unorthodox amalgamation of death metal, black metal, and grind without straying too far from the fundamentals of aggressiveness and depravity. Conceived in 2017 by vocalist/guitarist Matt Eiseman and drummer Kevin Swartz, the band spent its first years writing and releasing a self-titled EP before finding bassist Alex Huddleston at the end of 2018. This lineup went on to release the debut LP “Penance” in May 2020, which despite the challenge of releasing in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, was well-received. The album explores the themes of psychedelics, mental illness and the human condition.
TITHE’s sophomore LP “Inverse Rapture” evolves upon the themes of Penance and morphs into a more angry, raw, and disharmonious embodiment. The trio’s most incendiary material to date, “Inverse Rapture” maintains the blazing tempos TITHE is known for with dreary, lowering passages strewn throughout. Produced/mixed by Fester, mastered by Adam Gonsalves and featuring the macabre art of Abomination Hammer, “Inverse Rapture” is a complete sonic exhibition of cold-blooded savagery and anguish from beginning to end.
Lucida Dark is a Post-Rock/ Metal band from Omaha, NE. Since their inception in 2018, their music has enthralled their audience with somber atmospheres which climax into vast walls of sound, bringing to mind the temporal nature of love and life while simultaneously not resisting the inevitability of loss and death.

“The Best of Zebra In Black and White”
(From the liner notes of the 1998 release)
I remember walking into an old school gym and hearing a barrage of wonderful sound… it was tight, lush, rocking, and loud. As I neared the stage to get a glimpse of the band generating this heat, I was amazed to see only three guys on stage. How could so much music be produced by so few?! I smiled at my girlfriend (now wife) who had brought me there, and I think she knew that I was in love… not with her, but with the band.
So began my introduction to Zebra some sixteen years ago (1982). It was a typical gig for the day – a
St. Christopher’s Catholic Youth dance in a New Orleans suburb. The place was packed, as usual, mostly teenage guys, too young for area bars, with a smattering of finely dressed females to keep things interesting. The band was roaring through a set of well-rehearsed originals mixed in with crowd-pleasing covers from Zeppelin, Bowie, the Moody Blues, ZZ Top, Montrose, and others.
That night was also special because Zebra was about to sign with Atlantic Records, home of Led Zeppelin, Yes, AC/DC, and other hard rock heroes of the day. After seven years of three-set gigs in clubs and gyms, the band had finally made it to the big time. The gig had the combined aura of thank you note to fans, going away party and victory lap, all rolled into one.
Formed in 2006, the band has continuously grown both in its popularity and it’s repertoire. All the while, they have meticulously bridged the gap between creating the sound and feel of the Grateful Dead experience and finding the balanced, tasteful space to express their own personal identities as musicians. Their clear penchant for fearless improvisation coupled with their appreciation of the story telling component of the Grateful Dead’s material subsequently results in shows teeming with amazed and appreciative audiences

The hiatus from regular band activity saw HUNTSMEN return to their roots as a band, writing on an acoustic guitar and leaning into the narrative storytelling found on their debut full length, American Scrap. An invitation from Roadburn festival in the Netherlands to perform American Scrap in full at the 2022 edition of the festival gave them cause to revisit the songs that saw the band strike out with an Americana-metal sound that has been woven throughout their body of work. A collaborative approach to the songwriting has lent itself well to blending the strengths of the individual band members, as well as allowing space for threads of their own personal stories to to make their way into the sonic tapestry of new tracks, The Dying Pines and Let The Buried Lie Forgotten. The rich instrumental layering and warm vocal harmonies are a vessel for conveying bleak themes of loss and existentialist contemplation. Once again, the evocative cover artwork has been created by drummer, Ray Knipe, complementing the organic sound of the EP, which was recorded at Electrical Audio/Hypercube studios by Sanford Parker, and mastered by Collin Jordan (The Boiler Room). Elements of the post-apocalyptic vibe of Mandala of Fear find their way into this new EP, but The Dying Pines sits outside of the story arc present on the band’s full lengths – a vignette that lets us know the heart of this band still beats strong, and offers a hint of what’s still to come.
