MIA LeBLON

J DAVIS TRIO

Following their musical heart, The J. Davis Trio continues to thrive. They thrive not only because of their connection to real hip hop and jazz music, but also because of their ability to grow and change. Starting as trio, they now have as many as 8-10 people on stage, utilizing many types of instrumentation and styles. Their independence has allowed them to explore and incorporate from unexpected sources, resulting in a sound uniquely their own. Began as an actual trio with Julio Davis/vocals, Dave Smith/bass & Tone Aimone/drums, they realized that in order to play live, they needed another element. Paula Pergl came and provided flute for awhile. When she left, she was soon replaced by long time member, mulit-instrumentalist, Dave Winer. The J.Davis Trio arrived on the Chicago scene with their debut eponymous album, The J.Davis Trio, in 1999 where they created national buzz with a North American tour that included famous Chicago venues like The Metro, The House of Blues, the historic Green Mill Jazz club, and many colleges in the midwest. Tours to the east coast, the CMJ Music Fest in New York, down to the SXSW Music Fest in Austin, TX., to L.A. soon followed

TODD CLOUSER & A LOVE ELECTRIC

“A young, genre-defying guitarist, composer, and writer, Berklee schooled Todd Clouser is an accomplished musician across the modern jazz and rock spectrum, leading a unique path to recognition as an up and coming act, finding his own voice performing with musicians from Keb Mo to “downtown” NYC jazz legend Steven Bernstein. Clouser’s impassioned performances run from piano balladry to dense jazz and groove, exciting audiences with an approach meant to bend the rules of artistic labeling. “A Love Electric” documents Todd’s most aggressive ensemble yet, an energetic quintet based in the stylings of 70’s era electric jazz.” – Dakota Jazz Club

PHASE EXAMINATION

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

STOPLIGHT JONES

Disclaimer: Band bios are lame and boring. What follows is a self-awarely lame and boring band bio. Just picture a continuous cycle of exploding kittens in your mind’s eye as you read/skim the following.

After all meeting at college in the corn and soybean desert that is rural Illinois, Josh, Brady, Steve and Carter were all part of party pros Marcos and the Mack Daddys, playing house parties, DIY shows and the occasional bar. Pleasantly surprised at how much people liked their incoherent, chaotic party jams, MMDs kept adding members until there were like 18 or something. Ok, 7. With members graduating and not graduating and being spread out over the midwest, a more concise band was formed: Stoplight Jones.

There was Steve on keys/synthbass and vocals, Brady on guitar and vocals, Carter on drums and Joshua on sexophone (sic), the band decided they needed an actual electric bass, too. Turns out Joshua found one in his basement and discovered he could play it without ever touching it before, so now he plays bass and saxophone. Brady also discovered that he had a budding talent on the most versatile of instruments: the kazoo. There are so many lies in the last two sentences.

So they took some of the best of the Mack Daddys material, outfitted it for the newfound foursome of ladykillers, added killer new material, and things came together nice and easy. The musical part was the easiest. Naming the band was the difficult part, mostly because nobody else in the band liked the best band name ever thought of, “The Popemobile.” Whatever man.

Stoplight Jones will play wherever there are people who dig good music, and occasionally welcomes the Mack Daddys’ powerhouse female vocalist Andrea Dunn to the stage because damn, have you heard that bad girl sing?

ALEISTER’S WHITE STAINS

ST. BAGU

A special thank you to everyone who’s supported St. Bagu from the beginning. This is a gift to our fans and soon to be fans. Free music to hold you over until our full album release later this 2011. Keep an eye out for “Crash/ Boom” and tell everyone you know about this ep, “While We’re Waiting”. Please listen to your heart’s content and share it. Burn it, link it, sing it to everyone you know and once again, it’s been a pleasure making music for you!

LOCK UP

Sometimes “super-groups” don’t live up to the hype. That has never been the case with death grinders LOCK UP, who feature within their ranks a rather impressive pedigree of extreme musicians. After two classic records within the genre, and enduring the tragic loss of Jesse Pintado (NAPALM DEATH), the band has bounced back stronger than ever. With the help of new guitarist Anton Reisenegger (CRIMINAL, PENTAGRAM) and a superb mix from Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, TESTAMENT, NEVERMORE, EXODUS, DIMMU BORGIR), LOCK UP are back and ready more than ever to show people the true meaning of extreme.

STRONG INTENTION

Formed in 1994, STRONG INTENTION continues to deliver there own brand of thrash/grind hardcore/punk fueled by extreme speed, heaviness, and disgust. The band’s earliest incarnation found itself heavily Influenced by classic NYHC outfits such as AGNOSTIC FRONT, BREAKDOWN, and the CRO-MAGS, and released the What’s At Stake demo in 1993. These early recordings aligned the band with ultra-tough heavy hardcore represented in Maryland by NEXT STEP UP and GUT INSTINCT. But by 1995, issues of focus took their toll on the lineup, leaving then-guitarist Zac as the only original member, and putting the band into a year-long hiatus. In 1996, the band re-formed around a new core lineup, and the new members brought a new, diverse range of ideas and influences to the band. Gradually writing faster and faster material, the band released a debut 7″ EP in 1996 on Crucial Blast. This EP was a minor departure from the earlier heavy NYHC hardcore the band had been known for; as the newer material was much faster and moved Zac over to lead vocals. After the EP was released, STRONG INTENTION continued to go through a myriad of lineup changes throughout the 90’s; yet managed to tour the US and Canada 5 times.

Through all of this, the band’s sound has shifted more and more towards the harshest ends of the underground extreme hardcore grind/thrash / metal spectrum, as well as cultivate a thoroughly apocalyptic worldview.

ARLUM

Arlum is a Chicago born rock band influenced by a wide range of music from the 60’s – 90’s. The early life stages of Arlum can be dated back to the year 2001, when Michael E began writing the album which is known today as “Breathing & Believing”. The band formed in late 2003, when Michael E met bassist Randall Anderson and guitarist Jack Beshoar in college. Michael’s cousin Dimitri, the final piece to the puzzle, joined shortly thereafter on drums. A raging four piece of melody driven noise came to life. In 2004 Arlum began testing the grounds along Chicago’s Southside, accumulating a vast demographic of fans. The band would then later veer off into the direction of the big city. From 2005 to 2008, Arlum circled the entire Chicago land area, performing shows, from the Northshore down to the Southside. In Aug. 2009 and most of 2010, the band began recording their 1st full length, self-funded, self-produced album “Breathing & Believing”. The Album was then mixed and mastered by Quentin Poynter at Chicago’s Gunpoint Studios. “Breathing & Believing” was officially release on iTunes and Amazon on 1.11.11.
Moving forward Arlum hopes to provide their fans with the warm, familiar sounds of yesteryears, while exciting new audiences with hard hitting riffs of heart wrenching tunes.

BI-POLAR BEAR (UGLY ORWELL & AUGUST)

CHRIS SPEDDING

One of Britain’s most versatile session guitarists, Chris Spedding had a long career on two continents that saw him tackle nearly every style of rock & roll to come down the pike, as well as sporadically attempting a solo career. The fact that he never quite broken through to stardom, except in his native England and parts of Europe, and in professional music circles, is more a result of bad timing and worse luck than any lack of talent or commitment on his part. Spedding was born in Sheffield, England, in 1944. His family moved to Birmingham in the mid-’50s, by which time he had already taken up music, playing the violin in his school orchestra. That all changed when he discovered rock & roll, initially with Bill Haley & His Comets and later Elvis Presley. According to Chris Welch in a 2004 article, Spedding began to strum his violin like a guitar, and the Rubicon had been crossed. He was proficient on several instruments, including the piano (and could also sight-read) thanks to his music lessons, which put him several cuts above the typical aspiring rock & roller of the time, who might not have known three chords. Like Ellis McDaniel (aka Bo Diddley) before him, who’d traded in the violin for a six-string, the guitar was the vehicle through which Spedding chose to express himself. He organized his first band, the Hot Spurs, while still attending school. And not too long after that Spedding, still in his mid-teens, headed for London and joined a beat group called the Vulcans, and from there supported cabaret acts on a cruise ship and several touring country bands. During the second half of the 1960s, Spedding backed both Alan Price and Paul Jones, part of their respective bands on their early solo forays, this at a time when both were among the top-ranked solo artists in England. He also made a considerable part of his living playing with the Nat Temple Orchestra, doing weddings and bar mitzvahs, among other events. It was tenor saxman George Khan (aka Nisar Ahmed Khan), who had lately joined a band-in-the-making coalescing around poet/lyricist Pete Brown — best known for his work writing for Cream — who cleared the path for Spedding to his first major music opportunity. Brown was assembling a group and, at Khan’s suggestion, he approached Spedding about playing with the group that became the Battered Ornaments.

Smooth Money Gesture is infectious groove funk with ear twitching space jams, face melting solos and tight rhythmic changes

GILT TRIP

Holed up in Karmic Hit studios Steve & Russell P. Kilbey were making music – soundtracks for the movies playing on the screens of their minds- the inner cinema. The results were both low key and grandiose – sweeping atmospheric instrumental music designed as a mysterious, prevailing purveyance, filled with ambiguous mood. The finished album – Gilt Trip was released in a very limited run and has since become something of a collectors piece. Some years after the original Gilt Trip, comes “Egyptian Register” – more gossamery instrumental tracks coated in the bitter dews of regret. Musical poetry by an imagined poet – this collection keeps its head above ambience but draws on its peaceful depths. Russell P. and Steve Kilbey team-up this time with illustrious Bondi composer – Michael Hanlon to create a cd which will lull you from the edge of your seats. 15 spooky, scintillating, glimmering and tenebrous tracks which form the perfect soundtrack to your late night or early morning conundrums.

CHIDDY BANG

Philadelphia’s clever alt-hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang burst on the scene in early 2010 with their MGMT-sampling track “The Opposite of Adults.” They formed in 2009 as a four-piece electronic-meets-hip-hop group, but by the end of the year their lineup had been reduced to the duo of rapper Chidera “Proto” Anamege and Xaphoon Jones (aka Noah) on production. After building their rep on the Internet by posting tracks like the Tom Waits-sampling “Ice Cream Man,” the band released its Swelly Express mixtape in October of 2009. Proto’s witty rhymes plus the sampling of indie heroes like Radiohead and Belle & Sebastian became popular talking points, but it was their looping of the MGMT track “Kids” that brought them the most attention, and a massive U.K. hit when “The Opposite of Adults” was released as a single in February 2010. That same month, the Gorillaz single “Stylo,” featuring Mos Def and Bobby Womack, appeared with Chiddy Bang handling the remix. After a summer tour with Donnis and Bad Rabbits, the group released its The Preview EP in October on the Virgin label. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

SLOW SOUTHERN STEEL

Movie Documentary

HAIL!HORNET

four guys with nothin better to do than to bastardize metal music Hail!Hornet is a warning that southern sludge is getting thicker and meaner, and no matter how tight you wear your boots, it’s going to lock hold and suck your ass right on in. You can conjure in your mind what Hail!Hornet is going to sound like on paper, but they exceed your expectations by twisting chains around their knuckles and smashing windows, bricks and teeth on their self-titled debut album, one that loops theories from each of its constituents and creates a bare-boned, bourbon-breathed (to paraphrase “He Who Walks Behind the Rose Bros.”) swamp rat of an album that’s going to be mandatory for the mud mutants who trip out on this stuff. … Ray Van Horn jr. … A long running rumor of a band previously called Vagabond that came to light in the spring/ summer of 2006. Here’s how it went – Troy asks Vince, Vince asks Erik, Troy asks Dixie, all say yes ! Vince gathers Riffs and lights off the MIG 100, Erik beats the Christ out of the drums and Dixie drinks bourbon and bitch-slaps the Fender ‘P’…then we all drink bourbon ! Troy spits blood, we all drink more bourbon ! Get chased out of shed by hornets that Dixie pissed off… hence the name …more bourbon. Mission accomplished !

Scale the Summit

SCALE THE SUMMIT

At this point in their career, it’s almost easier to list the prog acts SCALE
THE SUMMIT haven’t toured with than the ones they have. From legends like Dream Theater and Yes, to cult heroes such as Cynic and Devin Townsend, to modern trailblazers such as Periphery and BTBAM, to heavy experimentalists like Intronaut and Mastodon, the band has shared stages with a who’s who of the genre’s past, present and future.
This mix of classic and contemporary, timeless and topical is also reflected in the instrumentalists’ evocative sound, which is just as vital in today’s post-
post- / anything-goes world of shuffled playlists as it would have been on the freeform rock radio playlists of the 1970s. The group’s fifth album, “V,” sees the group further develop their colorful musical palettes thanks to the addition of new drummer JC and the work of returning mixer Jamie King (BTBAM, The Contortionist), who also collaborated with the band on 2013’s Billboard-charting “The Migration.”Described as “essential prog” by Guitar World, SCALE THE SUMMIT was formed in 2004 after guitarists Chris and Travis met while attending Hollywood’s Musicians Institute. The group self-released their first album, 2007’s “Monument,” before signing with Prosthetic for the 2009 release of their sophomore effort “Carving Desert Canyons.” That album earned acclaim from fans, critics and peers alike

ELITIST

This is for those of us who observe and recognize the evidence of evil in faith, hypocrisy of government and the poisons of herd mentality. We are here to confront deceit and although the aroma of fresh, hot, shit nauseates us, we are all too eager to devour it with fork and knife…then ask for seconds so that we may have the privilege of violently vomiting it back down the throats of the contingent. This is for us so that we can be heard. Loud and passionate, our cries are intended to alarm and awaken. We want to destroy what it has taken centuries to construct. We want to punish those that abdicate reason and slaughter those with influence. We demand devastation so that we may rebuild and once again reclaim control of our own lives. With ire and disgust, we reject irrational ideals in favor of logic and common sense, and we’ll scream our message of discontent from bloody throats and open wounds. This is Elitist. – Jayson Smith “We skin our gods, we sell our faith, black holy hands are the tribute to what we’ve sold.”

OCD: MOOSH & TWIST

Still high school seniors, Moosh & Twist are two teens with dreams to change the game in a positive way. Two young men with the drive to make it. Swag.

LOGIC

Hailing from the DMV, more specifically Maryland, 22-year-old rapper Logic has been steadily cranking out music over the past couple of years that, at times, makes you feel like you’re back in ’96. The funny thing about it, though, is that’s precisely his goal. Never one to conform to “what’s hot” or “what’s buzzing,” Logic has been inspired by the Hip-Hop that helped redefine the genre and culture throughout the 1990s. Artists and groups like Nas, Wu-Tang, Jay-Z, and Gangstarr, are all influences of the young rapper, who has found a way to combine what he loved about each artist and give you something that is raw, lyrical, innovative, and fresh, while at the same time being 150% Logic.

THE BOY ILLINOIS

Priority/Capitol Records Artist Illi composes and delivers lyrics with a raw and unabashed eloquence, weaving together prose and poetry that draw upon his upbringing on the East Side of Chicago. An avid philanthropist and the consummate gentleman, he volunteers with inner-city schoolchildren to support positive community development. He utilizes his intellect to challenge the status quo by incorporating into his lyrics a reverence for history, a love and intricate understanding of his proud Haitian heritage, and a contagious energy that pulls fans deeply into each one of his songs. His powerful music has garnered major accolades; The Boy Illinois has been featured on BET.comThisis50.com, Revolt TV, Complex Magazine, hiphopdx.com, CBS Radio, Shade 45, and XXL Magazine. He’s shattered the glass ceiling by being the first-ever rap artist to perform at the Native American Music Awards. Hip Hop Weekly named him as one of their ‘Next to Blow’ artists. Chicago-based hip-hop blog Fake Shore Drive fingered his sophomore release as one of the most highly anticipated of 2014. He’s been interviewed repeatedly by legendary Hip-Hop journalist, MTV alum and radio personality Sway Calloway. The hype surrounding his career attracted veteran rap maverick Lupe Fiasco, who invited him on three separate national tours in 2015 and 2016. Their long with-standing relationship drove Lupe to declare Illi as “…one of the leaders of the next generation of hip hop.”

ESH

Gaining the majority of her industry experience writing and touring with other artist as a background vocalist. Chicago’s Alt/Rocker Esh makes a splash taking center stage. With her dynamic, emphatic delivery, Esh moves hearts and hips; with her glam/punk rock sartorial style. One must not forget Esh’s four piece band that packs hard-rocking compositions with powerful guitar-, bass-, and drum-driven punches. Just enough sauce to allow the pint size rocker the freedom to stir up a host of emotions from the affectionate to the aggressive. If Esh’s upcoming EP is any indication of that which is to come from her first album, it will be a big year for her. Shes already one of new artists to watch in 2012.

While taking a break from the road, Model Stranger has been in the studio working on songs and additional material for a follow up to their debut release “Dreams & Bones”. This next effort is proving to be a more focused studio project which contrasts to the approach taken on their first record. Priding themselves on their live prowess they recently released “Live at the Double Door” which showcases select tracks from a 2011 performance. The band will be releasing first listens and sneak peeks of their new material throughout the Winter/Spring of 2012.
