Jimmy Thackary

JIMMY THACKERY AND THE DRIVERS

Whether Jimmy Thackery headlines a festival in South Dakota or jams for hours in one of numerous blues bars that dot the musical landscape, he’ll always unleash an intense volley of rockin’ blues guitar guaranteed to leave crowds emotionally spent. His double edged guitar dynamics allow him to fire off tracer missiles, bend a note so it will fit under a limbo bar, run off dive bomber riffs, and find space within the trembling of one stinging note. “I put all my senses on hold and find the zone and follow what’s inside. There’s an electricity from your mind to your heart to your fingers. You just try and remember to breathe.”

He’s one of the few blues guitarists who learned first hand from the masters of the blues, not off a blues record or DVD. Though most associate Jimmy with his 15 years as the co-founder of the Nighthawks, he ended his time with them in 1987. Since then, Jimmy has been on the road as a solo musician for 15 years doing nearly 300 shows a year proving each night that he is still the guitar powerhouse in the blues.

Thackery has lived the life of a true road warrior; he’s absorbed the artistic lessons of life and filtered them into his guitar playing and song writing. To get where he is today, Jimmy has journeyed a highway of life filled with a series of twists and turns. He met all the right people and they have had a permanent influence on him.

It was Thackery’s time on stage with Muddy Waters that is branded deep within his musical soul. “Muddy was one of those guys who was constantly encouraging. He never told you what to do, but he always told you what you were doing wrong. He never minced words about that.
“The first time on stage with Muddy, I was in such awe of him that I just kept my eyes and ears open and just picked up on everything he did. It was the dynamics they had that became so ingrained in us. We heard it on the records and then stood on stage and saw how it worked.”
Thackery left the Nighthawks in 1987 because he wanted the opportunity to write and put newer material into the sets. First he formed a six piece R&B band, the Assassins, an all-star R&B, funk band from the DC area, and recorded three albums with them. Then, in 1992, Thackery put together his three piece band called the Drivers to highlight his explosive guitar and hit the blues highway.

“The 1990’s were a fabulous time. We were working our butts off doing” close to 300 shows a year. The irony is that was one of the reasons I’d left the Nighthawks, I was tired of working so much and not having a life outside the music. When you’re out on your own, you’d better rise to the occasion. So I found myself back in the 300 night niche. What made that satisfying is that it was my ship and I was the captain of it. We were doing material that I was writing. We were doing arrangements that I came up with.” Whenever Thackery plays live, a guitar stand props up four guitars and Thackery will announce to the audience, I’m gonna use all of them tonight!”
His recordings are no different. In that time, he’s recorded eight discs for Blind Pig.

His first record, Empty Arms Motel, was released in 1992. “That one still seems to be the favorite of a lot of people. I went into Kingsnake Records and rattled off some covers and originals. Halfway through, Bob Greenlee called Jerry Del Guidance at Blind Pig about the sessions.” From that session, Thackery began his years with Blind Pig.

In 1993 he followed up with Sideways In Paradise, a down home, laid back acoustic duet with John Mooney. Then, in 1994 Jimmy recorded Trouble Man, with Memphis producer Jim Gaines. That began their five record association. Wild Night Out, a 1995 live recording, Drive To Survive in 1996, Switching Gears in 1998, and Sinner Street, which added a sax to Thackery’s music in 2000. “I think that record, Trouble Man, turned the corner for me because I had a real producer and I was doing original songs. That gave me a direction. Jim and I did a lot of projects together. He did everything through Sinner Street. I was learning so much by watching him as a producer that by the end of Sinner Street, we both came to the realization that I was ready. I was telling him what was going on. He knew that I’d lost my training wheels.”

After leaving Blind Pig, Thackery has released and produced two of his own records, We Got It and True Stories, on Telarc and two collaborations on Telarc with Tab Benoit, Whiskey Store and Whiskey Store Live. And there was the critically acclaimed reunion with his old friend David Raitt on Blue Rock It”

All this has lead to a new Jimmy Thackery. Because every record is more about originals than covers, Jimmy traveled to Nashville to work out his songs with some of the best. This is not a Jimmy Thackery goes country. This is Jimmy Thackery rocks the blues. “I think True Stories on Telarc is my best song writing to date. For the newest Telarc project I went to Nashville to work with Gary Nicholson. I wanted to go and see how the guys in Nashville go about writing songs. We wrote this from the ground up. I came in with hooks and ideas and lines. I didn’t want to be overly prepared. I wanted to see how they build these songs lyrically. What you do with Gary Nicholson is throw out a hook or line and take off from there and you don’t leave that garage until you’re done with a song.”

Jimmy describes what writing is like for him. “Inspiration can come at any time. It might be a lyric first or it might be a musical lick first. It might just be a form thing. In my world, a lyric tends to be a musical road map. It tends to set up the music I hear in my head. The cadence of a lyric tends to suggest the way to go on the guitar. There was one tune we labored over with a certain groove and feel and it wasn’t rising to the occasion. At the very last second, Gary and I said, “Why not just rock this thing out. We completely switched gears and totally changed the patterns and chords and went for something completely different. We did it in one take. It’s the first song on the record and it just kicks ass.”

And there is Thackery’s guitar. “There are three guitar instrumentals on this record because I wanted to make a guitar oriented record. The guitar is still very rootsy stuff that is very rooted in blues. But also rooted in surf and spy music. I’m a sucker for that straight eight beat, twangy, minor scale instrumental stuff. The first thing every body did when they got a guitar in the early 1960’s was to play the music of the Ventures. I’m still staying true to those roots. Blues is well represented, but so is all that other music I heard. But so is all the other music I listened to.”

To make the best record possible, Jimmy hired some of the best musicians Nashville had to offer. It’s no coincidence that many of these names also work with fellow blues rocker, Delbert McClinton. Jimmy notes that even though it has a Delbert feel, it still has all of his integrity. “Maybe because of the way it’s laid out and the common musicians, it will strike a chord with fans who don’t normally buy my records.”

To support his newest project, Thackery’s ready to do the road time. “I started thinking that I missed the days when I was just a full blown, kick ass trio. I thought it would be fun to go back to that. I did keep Mark Stutso, my drummer of 15 years. He knows what direction I’m going in before I do.”

Between constant road work with his own band, producing the latest record by his Arkansas friends, the Cate Brothers, recording Whiskey Store with Tab Benoit and touring in support and playing various Nighthawks reunions, Thackery’s plate is overflowing, and that’s exactly how Thackery likes life – Overflowing.

POPA CHUBBY

If theres one thing I want people to know about me, its that I’m a survivor, says Popa Chubby. Heres my story: My dad died when I was seven. I was abandoned and raised myself. I moved to New York City when I was 18 and started playing music. I got a huge heroin habit and ended up strung out on the streets until I was in my early twenties. I started playing again and got away from drugs and never went back, and then I got into the New York blues scene of the early 90s, and here I am today.

Here is at the forefront of modern blues-rock, where the mix of intensity and integrity captured on Popa Chubby’s Back To New York City has made him one of the genres most popular figures. And hes an imposing figure at that, weighing more than 300 pounds with a shaven head, tattooed arms, a goatee and a performing style he describes as the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson.

You get the picture. And if you don’t, Back To New York City paints it vividly. On the discs 11 nasty cuts Popa Chubby has flipped the blues-rock label around, putting rock at the fore and the pedal to the metal with fat, scalding guitar sounds and stories plucked from true life. Some, like the rubber-burning title track and the pleading A Love
That Will Never Die, are autobiographical tales that channel whats deep in his blood as well as the fevered pulse of the city Popa Chubby has called home for 30 years. Others, like Stand Before the Sun and his sweet n sizzling take on Johan Sebastian Bachs instrumental Jesus Joy of Mans Desiring, chronicle his search for spiritual
enlightenment, which has led Popa Chubby to practice Tai Chi and Chi Kung before his sweat-soaked concerts. And then theres pure shots of fun like the chest-thumping Warrior Gods, which thunders along like a long-lost Motörhead gem, and She Loves Everybody But Me, a tongue-in-cheek hard-core Texas shuffle that purposefully nods to Stevie Ray Vaughan in its skyrocketing leads and solos.

DJ PROTEGE

Beneath the witty and utterly charming veneer of Chicago’s top deejay beats the performance-pounding pulse of a man whose dedication and passion for music knows no boundary. Upon the inception of the Protégé movement, Charles “Protégé” Wade broke into the industry with one guiding principal: follow your heart. His heart rested solely on the aesthetic appeal of blending music thus producing a distinctive experience for each listener. With the help of friend and colleague, Ryan Henry, Chicago’s leading tattoo artist and socialite, Protégé honed his musical talents through countless house parties.

With the attendees amounting well into the hundreds, Protégé was able to build his fan base. Soon after, he rose to prominence through regular gigs at the Funky Buddha Lounge and Ontourage nightclub. Currently, Protégé serves as the resident DJ for Shrine nightclub, where he has transformed a typical Friday night into one of Chicago’s most diverse parties. “My job is bigger than just making great music. My job is to create an experience where people can leave all of their problems at the front door. Where they are able to forget about that next exam. To forget about that next bill that is due. To forget about the parking tickets they have to pay on Monday. I create experiences which is why I am able to sell out any venue.”

With over 1,000 gigs per year, DJ Protégé has had the opportunity to spin for a variety of artists, celebrities, such as Wale, Derick Rose, Nas, Dwayne Wade, Snoop Dogg, Carl Thomas, Nicki Minaj, Wiz Khalifa, Diddy and Miguel.  His mixes have found their way to the airwaves of one of Chicago’s top radio stations, B96 (96.3fm).

ANIMAL

ANIMAL was co-founded by front man Tre Gator and drummer, Anthony “Big Ant” Capers. With a target to break the mold of ordinary genres of music by blending the sounds of rap, funk, rock and alternative music, ANIMAL pushes the limit packed with relentless degrees of high energy performance outlets. 6 piece band consist of, DRUMMER-ANTHONY “BIG ANT” CAPERS, LEAD VOCAL-TRE’ “GATOR” GATES,2ND LEAD VOCAL(FEMALE)-PHOENIX PHENOM, GUITAR-ED “TODESCO” GERBER, BASSIST-JONATHAN SANDERS, GUITAR-MIKE BRADICA… Their development of “RAGE RAP”, also known as “GHETTO METAL”, will guide their mission of taking over the evolving music trends and blurring the lines between genres. ANIMAL’s inner-band motto is “Conquer the World”.

Marina City

MARINA CITY

Marina City’s blend of R&B and alternative pop create infectious and commanding choruses that have garnered this Chicago based sextet their dedicated fanbase. Fusing elements from their diverse, multi-cultural backgrounds and influences, Marina’s City’s high energy live shows engage and energize crowds of all musical tastes. Brooding synthesizers reminiscent of The Weeknd sweep through the songs, while biting and soulful Motown-esque vocals dance over the top. Following the lead of bands like Imagine Dragons, X Ambassadors, and Fall Out Boy; Marina City walks that fine line, from “mainstream alternative” to “top 40 pop.” Nationally renowned festivals, such as Riot Fest, Warped Tour, and PIQNIQ have had Marina City grace their lineup. Singles, “Better Weather” and “Man In The Mirror” have been on rotation nationally for Cumulus radio stations and “Dreamers Never Die” can be heard at Chicago Bulls games. Their musical distinctiveness has earned the six-piece praise from the likes of MTV News, Alternative Press, Rock Sound, the title of Band of the Year by the Chicago Nightlife Awards and Ernie Ball.

DEVON ALLMAN BAND

Ruf Records announces the signing of guitarist/singer Devon Allman and a February 12, 2013, release date for his debut solo album, Turquoise. Ruf Records is distributed in the U.S. by the Allegro Corporation. Turquoise was produced and mixed by multi-Grammy winner Jim Gaines and recorded at his Bessie Blue Studios in Stantonville, Tennessee, as well as at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Devon Allman (vocals and guitars) is joined on the new CD in a core trio set-up that features his fellow Royal Southern Brotherhood bandmate Yonrico Scott (drums and percussion), as well as Myles Weeks (upright and electric bass). Special guests include Luther Dickinson (guitar),Samantha Fish (vocals), Ron Holloway (sax), Bobby Schneck Jr. (guitar) and Rick Steff (Hammond B3 organ).

Devon Allman is a member of Royal Sothern Brotherhood, the Ruf Records band he formed along with Cyril Neville (percussion and vocals), Mike Zito (guitar and vocals), Charlie Wooton (bass) and Yonrico Scott (drums). The group’s debut self-titled CD was released in May and has been in the Top 15 on the Billboard blues chart for six months, also generating extensive radio airplay and rave critical reviews from the press.

Turquoise is loaded with very personal, honest and powerful tunes in its 11-track song list. In “Turn Off the World,” one of Devon’s most insightful compositions on the new CD, he asks to go where he can “wash off this rock and roll” so that he can cleanse his soul to start anew and refresh his mind after spending so much time on the road. There is, naturally, a road song (“Homesick”) but also a more emotionally direct lyricism at work on this new CD than at any point before in his career, with songs about walking into darkness, loving to the end, finding peace or escaping the now through a time machine. He demonstrates his affinity for Latin and African music on the rhythmic “There’s No Time” (co-written by rising star guitarist Tyler Stokes), creates a big sound with modest tools on the sing-a-long “When I Left Home” (with guest Luther Dickinson adding some slinky lead and slide guitar), and pares down to the quietest of places on the lovely “Yadira’s Lullaby” (which recalls his late uncle Duane’s acoustic guitar on the classic “Little Martha”), Turquoise represents some of the finest work in Allman’s career thus far, engaging in its scope and thrilling in its execution. This is an album of reflection of Devon’s past life and it’s the stories that only he can tell. “These songs are very special to me,” says Allman. “It’s part ‘dusty road driving music’ and part ‘tropical getaway’ music. These are the stories, feelings and reflections from my last couple of decades of forging my musical path.” The 10 originals on Turquoise include two co-written with RSB brother Mike Zito, plus a blazing version of Tom Petty’s “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” that really rocks, courtesy of some righteous vocals by Devon and special guest Samantha Fish.

Currently based in St. Louis, Devon Allman was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he grew up surrounded by a humble life along with his mother. His first love affair with music came at a young age, eventually becoming a spiritual calling that wouldn’t stop. It wasn’t long before he and his guitar joined bands, and in 1999 Devon formed his Southern rock jam band, Honeytribe. While his breakthrough into the music industry may have been blunted by his choice not to use his illustrious surname, it served the purpose of his having to avoid the burden of the barrage of questions about his famous father that even he was unsure of how to answer. It was when Honeytribe began to release CDs and tour nationally that interviews slowly began to trickle out that Devon was the son of one of the biggest names in rock music. Today, he embraces who he is and where he’s been, knowing that he has paved his own way to Turquoise.

MUSIQUE

SHARKULA

Thig is the famous mad hustling genius from the streets of Chicago. Recording under the names Thigahmahjiggee and Sharkula, he’s been a fixture in the neighborhoods and on public transit, selling his wares and preaching the hip-hop gospel. But what distinguishes Thig from the pack is ability to translate what he does across social and artistic divides. In addition to the excellent straight up hip-hop work he’s done, he’s been involved in wide range of genre-crossing projects, including collaborations with Mark DeNardo and features on albums by acts like Pigface and Bagman.

THE BLUSHING GUN

The Blushing Gun- the collective conscience of our generation. The generation who knows love is getting weaker and weaker just as fast as technology advances. A name for the souls who sit and ponder of religions, science and nature and know they are all connected, and humankind is missing the big picture. We have all the knowledge and secrets within us… someday, we all may get some courage, stop blushing, fight back, and fix our world.

HOT QUANG

“HOT QUANG! is a power trio newly formed from the ashes of kings. Sometimes blisteringly melodic and other times confidently fucking you in the odd time fat cake without remorse. With comparisons from Swervedriver to the Pixies and influences like Shiner, Shudder To Think and Jeff Buckley, the whaling guitar of John Sparkman(Quarry To The War, Buttcracker PDX), the low end mastery of Mikey Lochen(Don’t Tell Sarah, Eve Thing) and driving rhythms from Aaron Ochsner(The History Of, The Jazz Pill) are certain to at least deafen an ear or two. A drunken bastard baby at 6 months old, HOT QUANG! has written over 40 songs and is always working on more,”

BULLETBOYS

Current Lineup: Marq Torien, vocals and lead guitar; Nick Rozz, rythm guitar; Chad MacDonald, bass; Stephen Jude Mills, drums

The BulletBoys began as a collection of talented musicians from high profile bands such as King Kobra and Ratt. Using their credentials, they were able to quickly capture the attention of music fans around the world while front man Marq Torien emerged as one of the most underrated vocalists of the era.

The BulletBoys formed in 1988 at the very peak of the Los Angeles glam metal movement. With record companies constantly searching for new talent, they possessed a pedigree that most bands would kill for. Unlike the other glam rockers of the day, the BulletBoys were more hard rock and blues fusion than pure hair metal. Thanks to comparisons to the likes of Aerosmith and especially Van Halen, talent scouts came running and the band quickly received their first major label contract. Over the years they dominated both MTV and radio airwaves, and remain relevant to this day in heavy rotation on VH1’s “Metal Mania” and Internet (SiriusXM’s Hair Nation, KNAC.COM, etc.) radio throughout the world!

LUCK OF THE DRAW

Luck of the Draw consists of Tommy Solace, Oaces, and Em Ce Haze. Tommy Solace is known for his collaborative efforts with Em Ce Haze and the fact that he’s probably tattooed you and your mom. Oaces is known more for his solo work and the fact that his songs make your day worse from being so damn depressing. Em Ce Haze is known for sleeping on couches and playing Xbox 360. And also for rapping really fast.

KRAYOLA

Krayola was a supergroup formed by Chicago musical legends in the 1980’s. But all original members of this group left town for good or got a mean case of the deads. Safety is no accident!

But one summer day, while playing with the ducks in the Chinatown Park, grade school best friends Amanda, Ben, Brett and Jim came upon a mysterious shoe box. Inside the shoebox? A notebook filled with incredible songs! Four loosie cigarettes! And a roll of nickels!

Not wasting any time, the four friends began smoking the wet cigarinos. Between puffs, Brett slipped the roll of nickels in his jean pockets; everyone saw, but nobody said anything.

After clearing their throats, the four friends took turns singing the songs to each other. “Wow!” said a passing police officer.

What happened next is southloop history!

In conclusion, Krayolas is a very talented band that has been trying very hard for years to write new songs that might make the original Krayolas proud. Generous souls that they are, most Krayola shows are fundrazors. Come support local music. Listen to The Crayons.

(Postscript – Brett fell under the influence of marriage and became a Hawaiian mailman. Curtis stepped in to fill guitar. Curtis was chosen because of his high compatibility with the Krayola online dating profile. His similarity percentage was 67%: majority.)

THE ATLANTIC

Up-and-coming alt-rock duo the Atlantic are no strangers to the scene. Vocalist Jessica Ess just lent her powerhouse pipes to Sleeping With Sirens’ new acoustic EP, joining frontman Kellin Quinn on the track “Don’t You Ever Forget About Me,” while guitarist David Newton previously played in pop-rock band the Best Week Ever and Screamo outfit, Thats Outrageous. The pair have now joined forces and are poised to shake up the standards of rock and post-hardcore with their new single, “Take Care.”

“I’m really excited to show the world what we have to offer,” Ess shared with us. “This is one of my favorite songs we recorded with Erik [Ron; Panic! at the Disco, VersaEmerge, Saosin] and I’m so proud of how we’ve grown.” If ever there was a single to introduce them to the masses, it’s this one. Between Ess’ fiery vocals carrying impassioned melody lines to soaring proportions, and Newton’s tight guitar-work adding a layer of aggression, it’s the kind of single that packs in depth and darkness, emotion and a touch of vulnerability.

MIKE GOLDEN & FRIENDS

In the midst of a public relations and marketing degree at Purdue, Mike Golden, like many college sophomores, began questioning his status as a student and began wishing for life as a musician. Mike, however, had some things that many other college kids do not: a raw passion for music, something to say, and the motivation to get himself heard. He called an old friend, some fellow musicians and recording artist from Chicago, and Trees EP Part I, Trees EP Part II and Groceries were born.

This collection is the first of Mike’s recorded music under the name “Mike Golden and Friends.” It is a raw, low-budget, but passionate mix of music recorded completely in the Chicago apartment of producer Scot Stewart. Scot’s creativity and vision included unconventional tactics: microphones made of thrift store telephones, bathtub recording, stomping, clapping, and clashing beer bottles to create the album’s percussion. No bass, electric guitar, or drums can be heard on these albums; the focus is on Mike’s breath-taking voice and the sounds of being surrounded by friends. Shows were played to replicate this raw sound, with the stage being full of Mike’s friends drinking, singing, clapping, and clanking their bottles together in unison. Now comes “Groceries”: Mike Golden and Friends’ first full-length record. The album name is meant as a metaphorical description of the music; at a grocery store, you may fill your cart with a variety of seemingly unrelated items, but they all work together to sustain life in a multitude of different ways. The music on this album is meant to sustain the soul, using a variety of different styles, genres, and moods. Mike also wrote many of his song structures and lyrics within a grocery store while working as a butcher, before deciding to pursue music full-time.

Scot Stewart again produces, engineers, and mixes the album, with Mike co-producing. It was recorded from June to October in 2011 at the homes of both Mike and Scot in Indiana and Illinois, respectively. This time, drums, electric guitars, and bass are included, as well as all of the quirks from the first album – stomping, beer bottles clashing, and background talking. The album also includes a new instrument Mike acquired: a true cigar box guitar, made by scratch for him from his lady for Valentines Day.

Mike currently plays shows mostly in the Midwest, having debuted at several college campuses and venues around major Midwest cities. He is based out of Chicago, however, and makes frequent appearances at renowned venues including Schubas, Metro, and Congress Theatre. This September, he made his debut in Cincinnati at Midpoint Music Festival, and hopes to continue playing shows and expanding the reach of his music.

MONDO GENERATOR

Mondo Generator was formed in 1997 by Queens of the Stone Age bassist/singer Nick Oliveri. Initially intended as a solo/side project, the classic “Cocaine Rodeo” album was recorded that same year, but shelved until the Southern Lord label released it and its unique brand of criminal insanity to widespread acclaim and horror in the summer of 2000. The follow-up, “A Drug Problem That Never Existed,” was released jointly in the Summer of 2003 by Ipecac/Rekords Rekords to further critical acclaim. A worldwide tour followed that was chronicled on video for the DVD release “Use Once and Destroy Me”. In 2004, Mondo Generator recorded and released “III The EP.” Oliveri began a solo acoustic career shortly after, which would see two full releases, “Demolition Day”, and 2010’s “Death Acoustic.” In 2006, Mondo Generator released “Dead Planet: SonicSlowMotionTrails” on English label Mother Tongue. It would be released worldwide the following year on Suburban Noize Records. In late 2010, Mondo Generator would be put on a back-burner as Oliveri rejoined Kyuss, re-branded as Kyuss Lives!, which also featured John Garcia, Brant Bjork, and new guitarist Bruno Fevery. In early 2012, Oliveri exited Kyuss Lives and is now concentrating full-time on Mondo Generator. The new album, “Hell Comes To Your Heart,” was released on July 3 via Mondo Media/Cobraside.

OMEN (L.A.)

Omen is best-known for melodic yet aggressive power metal/fantasy metal along the lines of King Diamond, Queensrÿche, Savatage, Manowar, and Helloween; Omen is forceful and hard-driving, but they’re always been musical and melodic. The band was formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by lead guitarist Kenny Powell, who had been a member of an L.A.-based band called Savage Grace. Powell’s early influences included Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, UFO, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, and Rainbow (among others), and Omen’s Metal Blade and Enigma recordings of the ’80s reflected the guitarist’s appreciation of those headbangers.

Omen has had its share of lineup changes over the years; in addition to Powell, the band’s early members included lead singer J.D. Kimball (R.I.P.), bassist Jody Henry, and drummer Steve Wittig. In 1984, Omen signed with the L.A.-based Metal Blade and recorded their debut album, Battle Cry, which was followed by Warning of Danger in 1985, The Curse in 1986, Nightmares in 1987, and Escape to Nowhere in 1988. Throughout the ’80s, glam metal, pop-metal and hair bands were huge on the L.A./Hollywood rock scene — the Sunset Strip was inundated with bands that hoped to be the next Quiet Riot, Poison, or L.A. Guns. But when other L.A. bands were heavily into the glam scene, Omen was a power metal band first and foremost.

EXUMER

EXUMER are:
Matthias K. – Drums, H.K. – Guitars, Mem V. Stein – Vocals, Ray Mensh – Guitars, T. Schiavo – Bass

Formed in 1985, by singer/bassist Mem V. Stein and guitarist Ray MenshEXUMER went on to release two albums in 1986 (Possessed by Fire), and 1987 (Rising from the Sea), that are regarded as some of the most cult thrash metal releases ever to come out of Germany. EXUMER was also one of the first thrash metal acts to capture exotic, foreign markets like Poland and Brazil, where their albums were domestically released in the 1980s. The subsequent tours that followed those releases secured the band live shows in front of thousands of fans and an unusually large following outside of Germany.

Plagued by line-up changes and internal turmoil the band broke up in 1990, and did not perform live, with the exception in 2001 at the prestigious Wacken Open Air Festival, until 2009. Mem and Ray decided to re-activate EXUMER in 2008, and the band embarked on their first tour since 1988, where they played 5 shows in April/May of 2009. The “5 Nights of Fire Tour”, took the band through Europe (Germany, Holland, Greece), and the USA, where they headlined the Thrasho de Mayo Festival, in front of 1300 fans in Los Angeles. EXUMER returned to Europe in spring and the fall of 2010, where the band appeared at Norway’s Inferno Festival, among other stops in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Poland and Bulgaria during their “European Ignition Tour Part I & II”.

In 2011, EXUMER completed writing and arranging material for their first new album release in 24 years. The band chose Waldemar Sorychta (Grip Inc., Therion, Sodom, Moonspell, etc.), to produce their 10-track strong, hard hitting album Fire & Damnation. Combining a punishing production with aggressive song writing, EXUMER manages to capture the intensity and feel of the 1980s thrash metal gems and yet sound up to date on their latest output.

Fire & Damnation has been released worldwide via Metal Blade Records in April 2012.

The new album will catapult EXUMER back in the forefront of the international music markets, and the following live assaults in 2012 will only further cement the band’s cult status among the ranks of classic thrash metal acts in the world.

OCTOBER 31

The underground Heavy Metal scene is certainly not for everyone. From the dreams of glitz and glamour that certain giants from the 80s and even modern bands that thrive from paycheck to paycheck, making it is the be all end all for some. Not that there is anything wrong with living off of what you love to do. It’s just almost scary how certain members of the human race can turn their integrity inside out at the flip of a dollar and history has proven, with exception (always), success to do more harm than good, especially if a band has or had any kind of staying power. Greed is a terrible thing. For others, its not always about being in the Top 40, having your video on Headbangers Ball, being on a major label, sharing the stage with the most happening band(s), free scrotum waxing, getting a gold record, etc. Some don’t care too much about that. Metal is a lifestyle to some and that has definitely been proven over the years by a certain US band.

October 31 have one main goal, to produce the most uncompromising, no frills Heavy Metal they possibly can spew forth. The latest, “No Survivors”, further proves this being the heaviest October 31 yet, and just as memorable as the rest.

SHOK PARIS

FLIP ORLEY

Since Flip Orley has bursted onto the comedy seen he has single – handedly reshaped the image of hypnosis from its vaudeville image, to an act hip and edgy enough for the MTV generation. Flip’s appearance on the “Today Show” brought rave reviews and stopped traffic in midtown Manhattan. His one-man show has set comedy club attendance records from coast to coast. Faithful fans and new comers alike find themselves screaming with laughter as Flip ignites his volunteers’ subconscious minds and transforms reality. What sets Orley apart from others in his craft, is his true comedic ability, delivering a hilarious stand up set before unleashing his volunteers creative imaginations. The Los Angeles Times attests that “…the beauty of Orley’s show is that, because most of the humor comes from the volunteers, and no two performances are alike.” The Dallas Morning News reports, “It’sdifficult to remain skeptical after seeing Flip transform a panel of well behaved audience members into a family of trailer-park dwellers from Arkansas, Southern accent and all!”
Orley has been seen on “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Martin Short Show,” “Comic Strip Live,” the “Ricki Lake Show,” Maury Povich” and “Space Ghost Coast To Coast.” It is his uncanny way with subjects, his finely tuned power of suggestion and rapid-fire delivery that keeps audiences coming back for more. Unlike past generations of hypnotists, Orley does not humiliate his subjects for comic effect, but entertains by enlightening his audiences…often with lasting beneficial effects on those who have been inducted. After making them forget their own names, having them regress to age 5, or pledge undying love to complete strangers in a highly original version of “The Newlywed Game.” Flip’s subjects often awaken from their hypnotic trance reporting less stress, sleep better, have more energy, and a renewed libido!
Flip is adamant about “not” embarrassing his volunteers. “I want the audience to laugh with them, not at them,” he says. “This is the purest form of improvisational entertainment you will ever see as the show rewrites itself every night, and the volunteers are my partners, not my victims. Each subject is treated with respect and gentility.”
Orley’s journey to becoming the country’s hippest hypnotist of his time began when he bought a book in the 6th grade called “How to Pick Up Girls Through Hypnotism.” Although the advice in that particular book did not pay off, Orley became obsessed with the subject, realizing the creative potential and learned everything he could about it. Flip studied psychology at University Of Arizona with the intention of becoming a clinical hypnotist. It was while majoring in psychology at the University of Arizona, however, that Orley discovered stand-up comedy.

Hypnosis took second place for a time as Orley honed his comedic skills in small clubs around the country
eventually merging the two. The rest is comedy club history as marquees across the nation invariably read “Flip Orley/Held Over By Popular Demand, for up to 12 weeks at a time.Realizing the value of the clinical side of hypnotism, Flip developed techniques in seminars and workshops to help people get in touch with their inner strength through the power of their own subconscious minds. Orley’s self-help CD’s address a verity of issues such as, stress management, weight control, quit smoking, and sleep disorders. Dentists, doctors and patients who are allergic to anesthesia have called upon Flip’s
abilities. Orley assisted one dentist who operated on a patient for almost 2 hours without an anesthetic. The subject awakened without pain and thought the whole thing was a scam, until she looked into a mirror. He’s been credited with helping to bring difficult pregnancies to full term through stress control, and aiding couples in rekindling the passion in their relationships. Orley maintains that he teaches his subjects how to
more successfully explore the creativity, imaginations and unlock their own subconscious minds.
When Flip takes the stage and rolls up his sleeves, his audience can expect two hours FUN and anexperience they will never forget.

RiFF RaFF

Former MTV reality show contestant-turned-rapper, Riff Raff, apparently landed a record deal last year, inking a deal with Soulja Boy’s SODMG imprint. The 20-year-old rap star delivered the news in a simple tweet on Wednesday (June 1), welcoming the Internet rapper to his label.

“everybody welcome my newest artist @RiFFRAFF_SODMG to SODMG,” Soulja Boy wrote (@SouljaBoy).

In response, Riff Raff thanked his new label boss with a tweet of his own. “THANK YOU @SOULJABOY …. iM BOU TO ‘BRiNG THE RiCE OUT’,” he wrote (@RIFFRAFF_SODMG), adding: “THE PRiCE OF RiCE WiLL BE AS HiGH AS GAS PRiCES …. DUE TO ALL THiS “RICE BRiNGTATiON’ ”

Since the announcement, Riff Raff has been tweeting and retweeting his legion of fans and supporters (over 100K) who have congratulated him on the latest development in his career. And, he even dropped a nearly three-minute freestyle called “Soulja Boy Signed Me”, in which he brags about how bright his future is now that he’s signed. Details regarding the deal were unknown at press time.

Riff Raff hails from Houston, Texas. He first came onto the scene in 2009, when he appeared as a contestant of Fonzworth Bentley’s MTV reality show, “From G’s to Gents”, during its second second. Although he was eliminated in the second episode, Riff Raff ran with his newfound fan, and has been heavily marketing himself on the Internet ever since.

MINOR WITS

Forever friends and now band-mates, Minor Wits (out of Chicago, IL) is a three-piece wind-surf-rock n’ roll band that started writing tunes together in the fall of 2011.

The band is comprised of twin brothers Brad (Percussion), Eric Nicpon (Guitar/Vocals) and Mike Nolan (Bass Guitar/Vocals).

Brad, Mike and Eric met through their local music scene in Arlington Heights, Il where every weekend they hung-out at DIY shows and venues in the city to catch bands like Spitalfield, Knockout and Fall Out Boy.

Around the ages of 13 and 15 the guys began to play in their own groups (The Local Scene, Upon Ember, Makai); they learned during that time that by writing sincere tunes, putting on energetic live shows and being themselves (on and off the stage) was what being a Chicago-based band was all about.

Fast forward 11 years, 3 college degrees and 3 full-time jobs and you have MINOR WITS.

[The name is something eric mouthed one day while studying the photographer minor white and started playing solo under the name MINOR WITS while opening for touring bands at the M-SHOP in Ames, Iowa]

In 2012 the band released their debut EP, “Bedroom Blues.”

Since then the band has played all over the Chicago scene– playing great clubs like Lincoln Hall, Double Door, Subterranean and Schubas on the regular. Keeping it cool while drinking brews, enjoying each others funnies and writing new tunes is what that band is currently up-to.

The band is set to record their second effort and will be in the studio this spring. Follow along as they do what they do — come and join them for spirits at a show and download the music for free.

It will continue to be Minor Wits for a long time.

TEN KENS

Two years after their acclaimed sophomore album, Ten Kens return with their most powerful and poignant record to date. The aptly titled ‘Namesake’ moves the band away from their signature genre-bending dither, into a darkened psychedelic voyage of self-discovery.

The product of this vision is the result of an intense yearlong recording period. Masterfully engineered and produced by Ten Kens own Brett Paulin and Dan Workman, the band utilized several different recording facilities to find the perfect balance of studio wizardry and natural resonance. A purified approach to songwriting enabled the band to design a sound specific to each individual story, and as is their custom, the band disappeared into complete isolation to keep their vision focused and devoid of any outside influence. It is this insidious exploration of sound, coupled with unremitting power, that makes ‘Namesake’ such an immense and profound listen. At its core, ‘Namesake’ is the thinking man’s stoner rock – an abstract art-piece constructed from the remains of decaying genres. Without delusion and with grounded ambition, Ten Kens present an epic auditory narrative of life, death, and all the sounds in-between.

The title track “Death In The Family” sets the scene for the imminent odyssey by lulling the listener into a false sense of security using hypnotic repetition and richly layered yet hauntingly pure vocal harmonies. Once the calm is collected, it transcends into a sonic cry only to erupt at the apex into a fiery crescendo of slaughtering guitar, relentless drums, spellbinding samples and deafening bass. The effectiveness with which Ten Kens stage these songs, play with them, allow them their much needed space and still let everything fall back into pieces again, shows stylistic parallels to their golden age forefathers Bauhaus, The Pixies and Radiohead. With a newly found musical aesthetic and rich psychedelic spirit, Ten Kens forge a brave new world that is as captivating as it is reclusive.

Based in Toronto, Ten Kens is the brainchild of songwriting duo Brett Paulin and Dan Workman. Discovered by Fat Cat Records in 2006, Ten Kens became one of the first Canadian acts signed to the famed UK label. In 2012, after two celebrated releases on both Fat Cat and Last Gang Records, and several successful tours in-between, Ten Kens carry on their mission as the ever-evolving, genre-altering, sound and vision no-scene music collective.

Having built up a reputation as a fearsome live act, and having shared stages with such bands as A Place To Bury Strangers, No Age, Deerhoof, The Joy Formidable and Surfer Blood, Ten Kens are set to widen their remit for 2012/2013 with scheduled US and European tours. Ten Kens third studio LP ‘Namesake’ is available now.

DEATHFROMTHELEFT

Four men who share the same convictions when it comes to playing raw, unforgiving Rock n’ Roll. If you like your music fast and loud, DeathFromTheLeft will Rock your ass off!

MAGATHA TRYSTY

Up-and-coming indie rockers Magatha Trysty are a power-pop force to be reckoned with. Based in Chicago and founded in 2009, this four-piece outfit is making its mark with narrative songwriting, undeniable hooks, and sweet boy/girl harmonies – delivered with a kinetic punch.

Their exuberant live shows – featuring manic guitar riffage, tasteful keyboard color, witty lyrics, in-your-face delivery and bombastic rhythmic energy – bring their solid set of original music to the next level. The husband-and-wife team of Christopher David (lead vocals/guitar) and Catherine Louise (lead vocals/keyboards) front the group, share lead vocals and songwriting duties, and exude an enthusiasm and connection that goes beyond the music.

The commanding stage presence provided by Christopher and Catherine drives the infectious aural assault, and hometown rock veterans Billy Blastoff (bass) and John Monaghan (drums) round out the foursome, putting the “power” into this power-pop extravaganza. Taking their cues from artists both old (Big Star, Cheap Trick) and new (The New Pornographers, The Decemberists), the band’s debut album, “Your Clothes Will Wear Themselves,” was released in Summer 2012.

JACK & THE BEAR

In the midst of what could be the largest movement in folk-rock music since the 1960’s, revolutionary sounds from bands such as The Avett Brothers, Deer Tick, Arcade Fire, The Felice Brothers, and Mumford & Sons open new doors. With a similar sound and an admirable aspiration, Jack & the Bear were birthed in the downriver town of Monroe, Michigan in the summer of 2010.

Named after an inspirational figure in lead singer Brandon James’ life along with the initials of the founding members of the group, the five-piece band hit the ground running with the writing of their first self-titled EP, which received a self-distributed release in the spring of 2011.

With the core of the group being made of two sets of brothers, an outlier family friend and a sister collaborating comes comfortably and naturally to the band. Writers Brandon James and Reginald (Ryan) Servis provide a unique blend of two musical backgrounds; traditional guitar styling’s of artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Glen Hansard meet new-wave cascading instrumentals found in songs of Fleet Foxes and Beirut. The use of four part harmony and instruments such as banjo, mandolin, trumpet, and accordion in many of their songs set the group aside from many others.

More recently the group just set foot with their second EP release “The Stranger Amongst the Loyal” which was produced/engineered entirely by the bands drummer Adam Schreiber. Adam recently opened up his own studio, “White Wagon” and is take on new projects along with handling Jack & the Bear releases.

Jack & the Bear started off attempting to form a sound like many folk rockers around today but ended up walking into a new sound all their own. They have been compared to artists such as The Waterboys, Springsteen, and even Tom Waits. Their live show is another story that is completely unique to them; something that is a must see for any fan of live performance. They’ve shared the stage with acts such as Deer Tick, Hayes Carll, Nicole Atkins, Dr. Dog, The White Rabbits, Langhorne Slim, The Felice Brothers, Soja, Jessica Lea Mayfield, The David Mayfield Parade, and countless other national acts.

The group set off on their first tour of the East Coast in the summer of 2012 to reach out to new fans. They returned home with lots of inspiration, new songs, new friends, new fans and loads of success which included licensing negotiations with MTV’s Music Integration Department.

Now consisting of seven members (and manager Jake Nielsen) the band has matured and carried on to a whole new level with the addition of another female violinist Elizabeth Burroughs. With the release of their third EP “The Trade,” the band is now looking toward recording their first full-length album at Prairie Sun Studios with Grammy Award Winning producer Oz Fritz.

Fritz has produced a number of albums with the legendary Tom Waits, including 1999’s critically acclaimed “Mule Variations.” Given this information it should be obvious that Fritz is a man that understands the unique dynamics of Jack & the Bear. Undoubtedly, the band is looking forward to building a working relationship with Mr. Fritz and hope to release their debut LP in the summer of 2013.

FACETIME

Tony Barba is a veteran Chicago/NYC based tenor saxophonist (Youngblood Brass Band, Brooklyn Qawwali Party) that has straddled the boundaries of many musical styles throughout his career. Tony has always fought to find a balance between his desire for experimentation while also appealing to his pop sensibilities, and his new album is no exception. “Facetime,” which includes Patrick Mulcahy (District 97) on electric bass, Conor Elmes (Youngblood Brass Band, Thought) on drums and Tony on tenor sax, bansuri and effects, explores the tried and true format of the jazz saxophone trio with a contemporary angle. Drawing influences from Indie Rock, World Music, Pop, Punk, Free Jazz and Electronica, this band looks to the future with a range of sonic motion and an aggressive approach.
