DEATH WOLF

Formed in the year 2000 under the monicker Devils Whorehouse by Morgan from Marduk, and after releasing the highly acclaimed albums ”Revelation Unorthodox” and ”Blood & Ashes” as well as the eps, ”Howling” and ”Werewolf”, the band felt its time to change name as the music and philosophy behind the orchestra has outgrown its name. The end of one world and the birth of another. The band now continues under the name Death Wolf symbolising the strenght, dedication and will shown in its creations. The band just finished the recording of its upcoming album filled with Northern end themes and death hymns. Cold steel over the worlds throat. More info regarding its imminent release will follow shortly.. The band can also proudly announce its first live apperance which will be taking place in June at the Wave-Gotik Treffen in Leipzig, Germany on the 12th of June. THE FORESHADOWING

There’s only a two years gap from the release of the dark masterpiece “Oionos” and yet the Italian gothic-doom band THE FORESHADOWING is ready to get back in the store.

In the last two years the band had an intense live activity hardening its live performance and becoming one of the most appreciated live act of the modern doom scene. After shredding the crowd at worldwide famous festivals like Summer Breeze Open Air and Wave Gothic Treffen, travelling around Europe on tour and sharing the stage with the most important acts of gothic-doom scene (Katatonia, October’s Tide, My Dying Bride, Saturnus, Isole…) the band is finally back to give birth to the awaited third chapter of its gloomy apocalyptic saga.

Title and tracklist are still secret but interesting details will be revealed soon through their official Facebook page, together with clips directly from the studios. Mixing and Mastering will take place at the mighty Unisound Studios in Sweden by the living legend Dan Swanö (Asphyx, Dark Funeral, Katatonia, Edge of Sanity, November’s Doom, Opeth, Pain just to name a few) while artwork will be committed to Travis Smith (Opeth, Anathema, Katatonia, Nevermore, Amorphis and many others).

“This is gonna be, without any reasonable doubt, absolutely metal” states guitarist Alessandro Pace “we worked hard to step forward and gaining our melodic side, while at the same time we wrote the most groundbreaking rhythms we ever played. This is gonna be an album with no compromises, it’s gonna be a blast!”.

Recording sessions have been held at well-known Outer Sound Studios in Rome with the old time friend Giuseppe Orlando (Novembre, Klimt 1918, Stormlord, Necrodeath etc.) and mixing is about to be finished.

The album will be released worldwide by Cyclone-Empire in spring 2012, stay tuned for upcoming news and the band studio diary.

MOONSPELL

Moonspell returns to the scene with what might be the most important album ever to be released by this legendary Portuguese metal band. With a renewed focus, they have risen to a new level so as to reclaim their throne as the leading European dark metal band. “Alpha Noir” is a nine-track outburst that shows us a much more incendiary band than in the past. With an avalanche of memorable guitar work, deeply rooted in the thrash metal of legends, Moonspell perfectly combines it with their own brand of Southern black metal, which they have been crafting since their groundbreaking debut offering: “Wolfheart”. The special edition will also include a second CD, “Alpha Noir’s” remarkable counterpart “Omega White”. It follows a more atmospheric path, delivering epic and catchy songs in the vein of gothic rock icons, such as Sisters of Mercy and Type o Negative.

ELIM BOLT

Elim Bolt — Nude South This self-assured debut taps into the classic Southern sound of Roy Orbison and roughs it up with fuzzy guitars and garage hooks, but never loses sight of melodic songcraft. —JS

NEEDLES IN THE RED

Headed by Neal Alger, who’s known in Chicago music circles primarily for his jazz guitar work, Needles in the Red is a new project that melds the visceral nature of rock with some of the harmonic sophistication of jazz. Add some thoughtful lyrics and a few of the most versatile musicians in the city and you have the power quartet Needles in the Red. Alger and drummer Eric Montzka of Needles have toured the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Brazil performing jazz together but this project represents a return to their musical roots of rock and pop. Bassist Dan Thatcher has been involved with bands such as Diana and the Dishes and curates the Eyes and Ears Music Series in Wicker Park. The newest addition to Needles is lead/rhythm guitarist Zoey Witz who has led bands that have shared the stage with Foreigner, Poison, Travis Tritt, and the Spinners.

BRAVE BABY

Brave Baby emerged from the dissolution of one band and the identity crisis of another with relations between members Keon Masters, Ryan Patrick Zimmerman, and Christian Chidester spanning back to 2008 in the Charlotte area of the Carolinas. They are set to release their debut album “Forty Bells” on Charleston based independent label Hearts and Plugs.

CHRIS PICKERING

CHRIS PICKERING is an exceptionally talented singer, musician and songwriter, from Australia, who writes remarkable songs with beautiful melodies, smart hooks and thoughtful lyrics. Bridging the gap between indie-pop and alt-country, CP is close to truly claiming a style all his own. His third album, Work Of Fiction, was recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, with Stax producer, Don Nix. His new EP ‘Corners’ was released in September 2012 and is the first of three EPs to be recorded and released over the next 18 months.

THE BUZZHOUNDS

The Buzz on the Hounds.

Wow, these guys must really like to party with a name like that? The Buzzhounds will be the first to tell you that the buzz is not chemical, but natural. It is all about the live experience. The give and take between a performer, and an audience on a great night. That’s the buzz…..that’s what it’s all about.

These guys are honest, old school musicians. They do it because they love it, and this creed carries over into their music. “We made an honest record”, this is how we sound. We used the best vintage gear we could find, (including the same mics and soundboard that the Beatles used at abbey road), and went right to tape with very little editing,” says their front man Jeffrey Manga

The result is raw rock and roll. Natural tempo changes and subtle nuances are captured throughout the record, giving it a dynamic, human feel. The record plays like a modern take on 90’s rock, paying tribute to Jane’s Addiction, Guns and Roses, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice and Chains, and Wolfmother, while maintaining an organic, original feel. There is an underlying element of blues and classic rock DNA as well. Each song has a different sonic theme, leaving the listener on the edge of their seat, and asking what’s next ?

DIA MORTE

Disinter

Brought into existence in 1990, DISINTER can be described as old school thrash/speed metal with 90’s death/grind and blackened metal influences. Deceased

DECEASED

These Virginia-based death metalers started out in 1985 recording and circulating demos, slowly building their reputation. In 1988, original bassist Rob Sterzel was killed in a hit-and-run accident and replaced by Les Snyder. Together with guitarists Mark Adams and Mike Smith and drummer/vocalist King Fowley, Deceased became the first band to be signed to Relapse records. The single Gutwrench was released in 1991 followed by their 1992 debut album Luck of the Corpse. Less than a year later they released The 13 Frightened Souls a five-song EP that covers a wide spectrum of death, speed, and thrash metal styles. Deceased offered two more releases in 1995: Blueprints for Madness, a full-length studio album along with Death Metal from the Grave, a mix of early demos and live cuts released on Last World Records. 1997’s Fearless Undead Machines brought Deceased wide critical acclaim and was followed by another critical success, Supernatural Addiction. ~ Kevin Odle, Rovi

TYPESETTER

Typesetter formed out of love for Midwestern punk rock in 2008, When a few friends and veterans of the St.Louis, Missouri punk scene began trading songs. The project languished while we were separated throughout the region, often the topic of late night conversations; “someday we need to start this band…” In 2012, we reunited in Chicago and began polishing off the old songs and writing new ones as well. We’re stoked about em, hope you are too.

TERMINAL MAN

Terminal Man is the newest musical incarnation of Scott Berhens, Daniel Wintercorn, Mike Graff, and Alex Kreller (ex-Call the Medic/ Dearest Fae/ Break The Silence) The quartet bring their grassroots hardcore background to a noisier, more experimental platform. The end result is something like the sonic equivalent of being executed by a firing squad while on heavy psychedelics.

Shawn Pittman

SHAWN PITTMAN

“Dallas-based blues/rock trance-inducer Shawn Pittman puts down some garage-blues dynamite on his new album Hard Road: a no-frills, gravel-crunching set of American guitar music tracked live in the studio. It’s a mix of new and old material, a creative decision that allows Pittman to give his fans a chance to hear how his current band handles certain songs from his considerable body of work.” -Mike O’ Cull

Vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Shawn Pittman was born in the small town of Talihina and raised in Norman, a city in Cleveland County, Oklahoma. At eight years old, he began taking piano lessons under his mother’s encouragement but later began sneaking into his older brother’s room to play on his drum kit. Shawn’s first concert was watching his grandmother play boogie woogie piano in her living room.

By the age of fourteen, he had switched to guitar and was soon introduced to the mysterious sounds of Lightnin’ Hopkins and Muddy Waters by Bracken Hale, a good friend and member of his seventh-grade football team. Their friendship would prove significant as Hale later collaborated with Shawn on writing material for many of his albums.

Pittman moved to Dallas, Texas, when he was seventeen years old to attend the Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing Arts, picking up his music education courtesy of his uncle who would take him to the Schooner’s jam in Dallas. This is where he first met and learned from musicians like Brian ‘Hashbrown’ Calway, Sam Myers, Mike Morgan, Jim Suhler, Tutu Jones, and many others. His first album, “Blues from Dallas,” was recorded in 1996 and later picked up and retooled for his national debut in ’97 as “Burnin’ Up” on the Cannonball Records label. His second album, “Something’s Gotta Give,” was produced by Jim Gaines and released in ’98.

Pittman toured as rhythm guitarist for Susan Tedeschi briefly in ’99, just long enough to make a television appearance with her on the Conan O’Brian Show. The following year he relocated to Austin and recorded his third album, “Full Circle,” backed by Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rhythm section, Double Trouble. In 2004, a more experimental and adventurous album titled “Stay” was released. After a much-needed break from the music business and some serious soul-searching from 2005-2008, Pittman returned to performing and planned to record one album per year. By mid-2010, he already had five independently released recordings under his belt. This flurry of activity eventually led to a new record contract with Delta Groove, and plans were immediately set to record another album.

“Edge Of The World” marked Shawn Pittman’s tenth release and contained an inspired program of original material by an accomplished singer, songwriter, and guitarist, recalling all the vintage tones and ambiance of the great blues recordings of the 1950s and ’60 s. Even more astonishing is that Shawn plays virtually every instrument on the CD, handling everything from vocals and guitar, to bass, drums, and piano, on top of doubling as the album’s producer and engineer. Special guest Jonathan Doyle (Mighty Blue Kings, Jimmy Sutton’s Four Charms, White Ghost Shivers) represents the album’s only other personnel by contributing tenor and baritone saxophone on four songs. When asked to comment about the inspiration behind his latest and most ambitious project, Pittman stated, “I’m just playing the music I want to hear!”

After seven years in Dallas (1993-1999) and fourteen years in Austin (2000-2013), Pittman moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he resided for five years, finishing a degree in Information Technology. During that time, he also released his 11th album, “Backslidin’ Again” (2015).

In January 2018, Pittman recorded his 12th album, “Everybody Wants to Know,” with longtime friend and drummer Jay Moeller. In the Spring of 2020, Pittman returned with ‘Make It Right,” in partnership with Netherlands-based Continental Record Services (CRS).

Opening for B.B. King twice, B.B. shared his secret for longevity with Shawn: “Treat people how you want to be treated — and remember everybody has a boss.”

In 2021, as an adaptation to the pandemic, he expanded his repertoire to include solo acoustic music and released ‘Stompin’ Solo,’ his first all-acoustic album on the CRS subsidiary Must Have Music. In May of 2022, Pittman toured Europe with Anson Funderburgh and Mike Morgan as part of the Texas Blues Guitar Summit, totaling fifteen countries where he’s performed.

He just released a raw new album, “Hard Road,” recorded live in studio in Austin with his new trio — with no overdubs, adding more than 100 original songs to his repertoire. His tight trio, including Jason Crisp on bass and Mike King on drums, is now touring regionally in support of the release.

Jason, born in Colorado, moved to Dallas in 1989 and currently resides in Austin, TX. His innovative, and old school approach to playing bass guitar is distinctive, mimicking the sounds of an upright bass.  He achieves this sound by strumming with his thumb across the strings. Jason’s talent also crosses to guitar playing, allowing him to hold down the bottom end of the team’s dual guitar showcases.  He has performed with Shawn for over 20 years and can be heard at live shows and recording projects. Jason comes from a musical family:  His father, also a bass player, sharing the stage with Jackie Wilson and the Doc Serverinson Band. Music is in his blood and has led him to perform with other musicians including: Omar and the Howlers; The Moeller Brothers; Joe Jonas; Ronnie Bramhall; Paul Osher; Pinetop Perkins; The Fabulous Thunderbirds; Eric Johnson.

Mike, a native of Dallas, has been playing drums since he was old enough to sit behind the drum kit. He is also a multi-instrumental talent, starting with playing piano at the age of eight. Mike continued his musical career by playing shows with guitar, and shared the stage with Jim Suhler, Texas Slim, and Charles ‘Sugar Boy’ Myers. His influences include Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Fred Below and Earl Palmer.

THE NICK BELL BAND

Nick Bell’s background comes from Moscow, Russia. He is originally from Chicago, IL and that gives him a tremendous feel for the Blues. What better city than Chicago!? With a mix of spending his childhood in Europe, and living in Chicago, his musical admirations spanned between two continents. Growing up on cassettes and CD’s of Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, The Beatles, Rainbow, Nazareth, and countless others, introduced him into the music we know as the Blues and artists such as Gary Moore, Walter Trout, Robin Trower, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and likewise, this loop stretches on and on and on.

Around the time he was 16 years old, he was introduced into a Blues based band out of the Suburbs of Chicago. For a few years the band spanned with little direction of where they were headed. Countless musicians walked through the group, and the main focus was the enjoy the music they were playing. In due time the group picked up tremendous steam, and got the notice of the Chicago music communities, and Legendary Illinois musicians all over. All the while, the young guitarist’s skills were being fine tuned and honed through personal ambition and replication of the music from his heroes. With no formal musical training, Nick has shown to audiences all around, that music does come from the soul. With notice from organizations such as “ROCK CHICAGO MAGAZINE” and “NEW LIFE RADIO”, the talents of the young guitarist has been featured on the Air Waves, and pages of prominent sources of entertainment. The endorsement and ability to share the stage with some of Chicago’s finest established bands prove that shows from this guitarist are not something you want to miss.

KELLY ZULLO

Cleveland based musician Kelly Zullo has been around the world playing music since the late 90’s. Moving briefly to NYC, Europe & Nashville, as well as experiencing great wanderlust, this lyricist and guitarist molds the gypsy-esque mantra with philosophical bite over a riotous acoustic guitar.

Not often has a more energetic acoustic music emerged which features a female guitarist shredding acoustic guitar riffs over a percussive bang, which not only highlights a unique style, but showcases an ability to blend the drum set in a loop with the top shelf songwriting.

Recently winning the International Acoustic Music Awards for “Best Female Artist, comparisons from Ani Difranco to Kaki King are drawn.

DON’T SPEAK

Don’t Speak non-apologetically owns the stage as they whip into highly energetic frenzies – skanking through every show while loyally producing every note, lyric and cadence. Fans of No Doubt, wait no more; the ultimate live experience is here!

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS

Last Year’s Winners is a rock band. Three guys that love to play. Carl Johnson is the writer, singer, the lead (and only) guitar player. He is as at home singing and playing acoustic in a coffee shop as he is on stage playing as loud possible. Luke Leeman is a bass player’s bass player, perfecting not only a bass line, but a counter melody or a hook that the song grabs onto. Zach Dresser has the task of making this power trio groove, keeping it feeling good whether it’s a spacey acoustic driven number or a loud, bombastic rock song. Last Year’s Winners started as a collection of Carl’s songs that begged to be recorded, and a couple friends that were as much fans as collaborators. As children of the grunge and alternative rock filled 90’s, Last Year’s Winners takes that straight forward yet personal sound in a modern and original direction.

STEELY JAMES

On Independence Day in The United States of America, Nashroc Records released what could be the most powerful political album of all time-Free Speech Experiment by Steely James.

This incredible, incendiary and important release by Steely James has made a statement that will reach far beyond the limits of the pop world. His mission with Free Speech Experiment seems not for fame, money or the trappings of success, but to get a message out from The People… to The Politicians. Through his incredible talents as a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist, he is speaking for the masses in a way few are able to do. In many ways, Free Speech Experiment continues the US tradition of great protest singers from Woody Guthrie right through to Chuck D. Now the modern day protester, Steely James pulls no punches with songs such as Unmanned Police Drones, Things That Kill People, No More War, The Corporation, and Black Gold.

People have eagerly embraced the message and are buying into James’ music. A nationwide acoustic tour is already in the cards. Bit by bit, town by town, his voice is being heard. James is not only singing a lament for the terrible wrongs that have been done to America by political corruption, but is, more importantly, uniting the people. It takes many together as one strong voice to bring positive changes, the Free Speech Experiment has begun…

THE AMERICAN SCENE

We are five gentlemen from the great state of California. These are the songs we couldn’t trust anyone else to sing. Come hell or high water we intend to play them for whoever will listen for as long as we’re allowed. We want to be your friend.

TONIGHT ALIVE

It’s an unlikely tale. Rising from the fevered hotbed of Sydney, Australia’s underground hardcore scene, boy meets girl. Or rather, two boys meet girl to make kick-ass rock music.

Try to keep up – the story goes something like this…

Guitarist Whakaio Taahi and his compadre bass player, Cameron Adler, needed a frontman for a rock project. Scrap that. Frontwoman. Enter ingenue-with-attitude, Jenna McDougall – as soon as the sixteen-year-old songstress’ soaring contralto and sweet strains took the mic to their songs, something clicked. Already onboard, rhythm axeman Jake Hardy and new recruit, drummer Matt Best – a childhood buddy of Whakaio’s. One jam later, the writing was on the wall. Tonight Alive were up and running, pedal to the metal.

The band stepped up, and fast. Songs honed, stagecraft already a dead cert, they entered Sydney’s subterranean circuit of metalcore and heavy bands, playing their own brand of catchy-as-all-hell pop-punk… and promptly took the scene by storm, developing a rabid young fanbase in thrall to the band’s ebullient, fist-pumping anthemery, arena-sized hooks and high-voltage live performances. Right from word-go, it was clear Tonight Alive were going somewhere.

A year on, courted by labels and management secured, with two stellar EPs (‘All Shapes & Disguises’ and ‘Consider This’) under their belts, a demo of Tonight Alive’s new material landed on producer-extraordinaire Mark Trombino’s (Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, The Starting Line) desk. He rang the band immediately, wanting in.

“For him to contact us, and say he was interested, was a big deal,” says Jenna, now 19. “We couldn’t believe he’d put himself out like that. He’s amazing. Mark created the albums we all grew up listening to – the albums that launched the careers of all these great bands.

Whakaio weighs in. “Yeah, it felt right that he do our first album, that he be the one to kick-start us off. As soon as we got over there, we found Mark felt the same.”

Recorded at LA’s infamous NRG Studios over two months, Trombino’s personal interest in the project played out in other fortuitous ways. “Nothing was left to editing or over Pro-Tooling,” notes Whakaio. “Jenna sang every line until it was right. I played every guitar part. The drum sound is natural and not heavily sampled. There was no copy-pasting. That was really important to us, as well as Mark. That it sound real. Natural.”

“It was great because it made us really step up as musicians,” says Jenna. “I know I definitely came back from the experience a better singer.”

What you’re listening to now is the inspired result of that auspicious partnership between a bunch of Aussie kids and an auteur with a canon of classic records already to his name. What Are You So Scared Of? is one more album to add to that list.

TURKUAZ

The Brooklyn-based funk army known as Turkuaz “is like tossing a lit match into a dumpster full of fireworks” (bestnewbands.com). Their stage show combines influences from Sly and the Family Stone to Talking Heads into an explosive auditory and visual circus, a full-frontal assault on the senses. After multiple residencies at NYC’s Brooklyn Bowl, two blowout performances at Bear Creek Music Festival, and tours spanning the east and west coasts, Turkuaz has developed a reputation from NYC to San Francisco as the band that plays louder, faster, and harder than all the rest.

The Run Around

THE RUN AROUND

Your Friendly Party Punk rock Hooligans from Chicago

The year was 2006. The day was no different than any other Fall Day in Normal, IL. Five guys got together for the first time in a cramped basement to start what can be described as a true underdog story that they only slightly remember. Fueled by Admiral Nelson and a desire to write uninhibited Party Punk The band started playing house parties, winning numerous local battle of the bands and the hearts of every college kid they played in front of. To them this was success, they wanted to drink for free, and play one hell of a party every night. However, in the back of their minds they knew there was a great big world out there and if they ever wanted their brand of debauchery to reach the masses they’d have to expand on their college circuit.

In the Spring of 2009 frontman Jason Fein was surfing the world wide web, for what he still refuses to speak of, but in doing so he stumbled upon an International Battle of the bands. The winner of this contest got to play one of the main stages at SummerFest in Milwaukee, opening up for Blues Traveler and Tom Petty. Jason, not thinking much of it, decided for the hell of it he would enter their latest single “Runaway Mexico” into the contest. He didn’t even tell his band he did so for the first couple weeks. After all, there were 776 other bands across the world in this contest and they were just a small time College band. After the second week of being in the contest the band had climbed from the bottom to the 223rd spot. Thinking this was news worthy for his band mates he decided to mention it at that point. Within a month, the band had reached the top 50, two months, the top 10 and by the end of the first round the band had over 100,000 votes and was firmly locked in the number two spot. The top 4 bands went on to the final round which was three weeks of the world voting on their favorite band based on their entire catalog. Still, forever the underdogs the band knocked off three other more experienced bands to put them from a college basement band to playing the biggest Music Festival in the world.

Many bands would have peaked at this point. After all, how do you top that? Well, within a month of them playing the festival they had signed their first Management contract. This contract put them on stage at The famous Congress Theatre in Chicago. Shortly after that they signed their first record deal with the now defunct Window Licker Records but before that they released their most successful album up that point entitled Side Effects May Vary. The album’s biggest single “The DEA” got them nation radio play including Chicago’s late/great Q101. The band took this album and hit the road playing twenty different states across America and gaining hundreds of fans a night helping fund their completely DIY tour schedule. For This band, being independent and doing it themselves was never an issue. In fact, it’s what felt most natural. After all, in their heads they were still the band playing in that cramped basement in Normal, IL.

A year later and many management, artist development and record label conversations the band finally got tired of handling everything themselves. At this time they met Rafay Qamar, a young but driven band manager who immediately saw and fell in love with The Run Around brand. For the band, going to someone unknown but eager was exactly what they needed. Now, they could focus on writing the long awaited follow up album to Side Effects May Vary that their fans were growing more and more impatient for by the day.

In The Fall of 2012 The Run Around released what would easily be their most impressive and impactful body of work yet in Welcome to the Circus. Their CD release show was to a sold out Hard Rock Café in Chicago and they haven’t looked back yet. At the same time they released a video for their biggest single to date “Chicago” that has over 30,000 plays. Everyone that has heard that song has said the same thing “I can’t wait to hear that song in Chicago sport stadiums.” Since the release the band has helped pack and sometimes sell out The House of Blues, The Metro, Reggies, The Cubby Bear and Durty Nellies just to name a few.

Just like their music, The Run Around fans are rowdy and dedicated. One thing that hasn’t changed from the frat party basements, this bands stage show and energy goes unmatched. Their albums will draw you in, there live show will make you a lifelong fan.

CHUCK INGLISH

He is best known as the reserved half of the Cool-Kids. With a relaxed rapping style and an interesting lyrical foundation in his verses, it probably shocks most that he is also a very talented producer.

His tracks have been related to summer jams from the 80’s and with no sampling noted to date, he draws his audience mostly from the Chicago and LA rap fans. Having done a large portion of the cool-kids releases as well as featuring in other illRoots releases, he is considered a force to be reckoned with.

JOE FILISKO & ERIC NODEN

The blues and roots music duo— Joe Filisko and Eric Noden make an unforgettable impression. Their jaw-dropping virtuosity enables them to create more layers of sound and feeling than most full bands can summon, and both are high-energy, ultra-rhythmic performers. The collective result— in both their live shows and their recordings— are charged, dramatic performances that are simultaneously powerful and sophisticatedly subtle.

“Two marvelous musicians who have captured not only the sounds but the emotional spirit of some of the richest bloodlines of American music.” — Kim Field, author of Harmonicas, Harps, and Heavy Breathers

“Joe Filisko and Eric Noden make a thoroughly convincing case that this music is the real deal and their spirited performances make it sound both fresh and contemporary.” –Dirty Linen

“Eric and Joe are possessed by the spirits of Howlin Wolf, Sonny Terry, Robert Johnson, Johnny Woods, Sonny Boy Williamson, Gwen Foster and transported listeners back to the 1920′s Delta.. We love Eric and Joe. Please send them back.
—–Mickey Raphael, harmonica player for Willie Nelson

Just a few short years after their first meeting, Filisko and Noden are displaying their compelling musicality on the world stage. They’ve performed at the legendary Chicago Blues Festival, the Paramount Blues Festival in Grafton, Wisconsin (where some of the greatest of the early blues recordings were made); Sweden’s Eslov Blues Festival; and the Festival Ecaussines in Belgium. The duo also recorded the theme song for the “Sweet Folk Chicago” on the legendary Chicago radio station WFMT. Joe and Eric are expert practitioners of harmonica and guitar styles that defined the blues in its earliest days but are now all too rarely heard. Both of these standout performers also teach and make it a point to share the insights they’ve gained from two lifetimes of deep research into the history of the music. For several years the city of Trossingen, Germany—the home of the Hohner harmonica company—has invited Filisko and Noden to conduct master workshops, and the pair has also offered joint workshops and performances at Australia’s Playmakers Festival, the Harmonicales Festival in France, and at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.

BILLY BRANCH

Billy Branch has followed a very non-traditional path to the blues. Unlike many blues artists, he isn’t from the South. Billy was born in Chicago in 1951 and was raised in Los Angeles. He first picked up a harmonica at the age of ten and immediately began to play simple tunes.

Billy returned to Chicago in the summer of ’69 and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in political science. It was during these years that he was introduced to the Blues. He soon became immersed in the local blues scene. He spent a great deal of time at legendary blues clubs such as: Queen Bee’s and Theresa’s Lounge; he learned from such stalwart harmonica players like: Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, Junior Wells and Carey Bell.

His big break came in 1975 during a harmonica battle when he beat Chicago legend, Little Mac Simmons at the Green Bunny Club. He made his first recording for Barrelhouse Records and began to work as an apprentice harp player in Willie Dixon’s Chicago Blues All-Stars. He eventually replaced Carey Bell and worked with Willie Dixon for six years.

During this time, Billy formed the Sons Of Blues (S.O.B.s) featuring musicians who where the sons of famous blues artists. The original S.O.B.s consisted of Billy, Lurrie Bell, Freddie Dixon and Garland Whiteside. They toured Europe and played at the Berlin Jazz Festival. Shortly afterward, they recorded for Alligator Record’s Grammy-nominated Living Chicago Blues sessions, and Billy has been a regular studio player appearing on over fifty albums.

Billy has recorded and/or performed with an incredible list of Blues legends including: Muddy Waters, Big Walter Horton, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Koko Taylor, Johnny Winter, and Albert King. In 1990, he appeared with three harp legends:Carey Bell, Junior Wells, and James Cotton on W.C Handy Award winner, Harp Attack! His most recent recordings for the Polygram label are entitled The Blues Keep Following Me Around and Satisfy Me.

Billy is also passing on the blues tradition to a new generation through his Blues In The Schools program. He is a dedicated blues educator and has taught in the Chicago school system for over twenty years as part of the Urban Gateways Project. In 1996, some of his finest students opened the Main Stage at the Chicago Blues Festival which was broadcast throughout the U.S. on National Public Radio.

Blues producer, Chicago Beau has written, “Billy Branch has become a beacon, and model for his times; as an artist, and social/cutural activist… Billy Branch is a Bluesman; Billy Branch is the Blues.”
