Axemaster was formed in 1985 by lead guitarist Joe Sims and Drummer Brian Henderson. The project and music has stood the test of time and remains strong after over 25 years. With the band’s original lineup (also including vocalist/bassist Christopher Michael) they recorded their first 4 releases: “Slave to the Blade” (demo EP cassette), “Blessing in the Skies” (full length album), “The Vision” (shaped pictured disc single), and “Crusades” (shaped picture disc single), the last 3 being released by Azra International Records. They were also featured on Azra Record’s compilation shaped picture record “Metalgon” and in the comedy/horror movie “Killer Nerd”. Several lineup changes followed as the band recorded their next 2 releases: “Death Before Dishonor” (full length cassette, European-only release) and “5 Demons (Imperative is their Demise)” (self-released EP cassette). Joe Sims was the only original member to remain and play on every release. After this the band altered their musical direction and changed the name to The Awakening. That group did 1 CD before breaking up in 1995. Four years later, Unisound Records {Greece} re-issued selected songs from 4 of the band’s releases (as well as 3 songs by The Awakening) on a 15 track CD titled “Axemaster & The Awakening, 1985-1995”. In 2002 Unisound re-released “Death Before Dishonor” (as well as some unreleased material) on CD. The success of these discs proved that Axemaster’s music was still in demand years after their breakup. In 2006 the band’s original lineup re-united and in 2007 re-released “Blessing in the Skies” on disc through Burning Star Records {Greece}. It includes the album in its entirety as well as 3 bonus tracks and a video for the song “Slave to the Blade”. The reunion was short-lived however, as Christopher Michael did not remain with the band and Axemaster was dissolved not long afterward. In 2010, Joe Sims and Brian Henderson decided to re-start the Axemaster project and produce a new full length CD. They wrote all the music for the album then added vocalist Geoff McGraw and bassist Jim Curtis to complete the band’s lineup. The new disc is currently in the works and is turning out to be BY FAR the band’s favorite Axemaster release to date. The new songs have a thrashy edge along with a dark, doom metal feel; somewhat similar to the style of the band’s last 2 releases of new material, but with greatly improved songwriting and better musicianship. Additionally, the band was recently given the opportunity to appear on a promotional compilation CD which is being used to publicize the re-launch of the German magazine “That’s Metal”. So they temporarily put off working on the album in order to record a song especially for the compilation. Released in April 2013, the CD should be valuable in spreading Axemaster’s name in advance of their new album being finished and released. With the worldwide exposure & success that they’ve already achieved, the band is eager to complete the new album and put their show on the road to take the metal world by storm!!!!
Pennsylvania’s Argus stormed onto the underground metal scene with their twin guitar-driven, doom-tinged, working class metal sound. Releasing a self-recorded demo in early 2007 on John Brenner’s (Revelation/Against Nature) DIY label, Bland Hand Records, the band was roundly welcomed by the metal community at home as well as abroad and established its foundation amongst friends/fans within the scene. With this initial momentum, the band created a buzz that was only solidified by their punishing live performances.
Their self-titled debut album was released in May of 2009, receiving much critical praise. Following, was the 2011 release of the epic album Boldly Stride The Doomed, which also marks a switch to the record label, Cruz Del Sur. The band has continued to gain notoriety, traveling abroad and around the U.S. The release of their third full-length album, Beyond The Martyrs, is staged for release in Late Summer/Early Fall 2013.
If you say Holland and the first Dutch metal band, which image comes to mind then? Right! We’re talking about PICTURE! And they’re back stronger and more motivated than ever.
Picture was the very first Dutch hardrock band with a “record deal”. With a history of 7 released albums world-wide and extensive tours throughout Europe with a.o. AC/DC, Saxon, Ted Nugent, Rose Tattoo and April Wine, everybody understands the past of Picture.
Back in 1979 (30 years ago) the story of Picture began. Classic songs like Heavy Metal Ears, Diamond dreamer, Bombers and Eternal Dark (covered later by Swedish metal giants Hammerfall) and highly energetic live performances made Picture a very successful band. Picture paved the way for all other successful Dutch hardrock bands that followed in their footsteps soon afterwards.
In many countries in the world Picture is treated as a cult band and when the long anticipated reunion finally happened at the beginning of 2008, many invitations to play on big (foreign) festivals followed soon. A limited edition live CD was being recorded and from December 2008 until January 2009 the band retreated in the StarSound Studios in Utrecht (Holland) to record their new studio album “Old Dogs New Tricks”.
Picture, Old Dogs New Tricks October 1st 2009, 30 years after the release of their first album, a new Picture studio album “Old Dogs New Tricks” is officially released. The album contains a wide variety of hard rock and old school metal songs, completed with a breath taking ballad. The album was produced by Nico Verrips, who already produced and wrote numerous hits into the charts and who kept the eighties feeling, but gave the record a contemporary modern sound.
Old Dogs New Tricks is a typical Picture album with a variety of heavy and dynamic songs. The powerful and raw voice of Pete Lovell shows to its full advantage with this kind of heavy music. Add the brilliantly composed songs anno 2009 to this and you will agree that this is Picture in their historically best line-up ever. This is Picture 2009! Be prepared to be blown away…

Jr. Thomas is an American songwriter and producer of reggae and soul influenced music. Early in his career he established his reputation as the frontman, guitarist and songwriter for the Minneapolis based group The Dropsteppers. In January 2013, Jr. Thomas teamed up with Alex Stern (Void Union) to record his debut full length album. Alex Stern reached out to the Void Union rhythm section which included Thaddeus Merritt and Rick Smith to jump on board the Jr. Thomas project. As a reggae powerhouse studio band they call themselves The Venditions. Special guests on the album also include: Dave Hillyard of The Slackers, Zack Brines of Pressure Cooker, Rich Graiko of Void Union and Rob ‘Bucket’ Hingley of The Toasters. Together the musicians arranged and recorded sounds that resonate different eras of Jamaican reggae with a taste American soul. The group all agreed Brian Dixon (The Aggrolites) would be a perfect fit to mix the album thus further developing the sound that is Jr. Thomas meets The Venditions.

Brick was born and raised in Petersburg, Indiana. Although he wanted to do nothing more than be in a rock band, he was coerced into attending university. After taking a class at Indiana University on the complete works of Charles Chaplin, he decided to try to make films. During a stint at Southern Illinois University the following year, he discovered Truffaut, Godard and Tarkovsky, thus his fate was sealed.
During this journey of personal and financial ruin, Brick moved to New York, then Los Angeles, and finally back to New York chasing the cinema dragon. Influenced greatly by Cassavetes, Truffaut, Rohmer, Cukor and a host of others, he pitched films all over both cities (with several near misses) until he moved back to Petersburg deeming cinema dead.
He finally chose to work in the last place he said he’d ever end up, local television. He has produced two feature films, one which shall never be seen again. After giving up features for his health and sanity, he discovered that the only thing he ever truly loved was RocknRoll.. He now spends most of his time writing and performing with his band and producing music in his studio. He won’t admit it in public but he has been in contact with several producers about a certain screenplay. He is married and has a daughter. They still reside in Petersburg.

VULGAARI (Finnish for “vulgar”) started off as a writing/recording project by Zack Kinsey that was never meant to see the light of day. Just doing it as another outlet for musical creativity, but with a bit of encouragement from lead guitarist Brent Hedtke, they decided to put the songs up on the web available for download in February 2012. VULGAARI immediately began getting incredibly positive reviews from multiple popular metal blogs/zines/etc and were approached shortly thereafter by a small independent label about putting out a physical album. VULGAARI signed with Cubo De Sangre Records in early 2012 and the self-titled album was released on vinyl and cd in December 2012 on a single album licensing deal. VULGAARI has put together a killer line-up of talented veterans to play live and have been playing out to rave reviews since early 2013. VULGAARI is planning to record their next album over the winter of 2013/2014 and will be touring and playing festivals shortly thereafter.
“It’s the most authentic Delta blues you’re likely to find anywhere.”
One of Germany’s most successful metal bands, is one of the most experimental and diverse musical acts in the history of metal. They have always found the courage to explore uncharted territories, while delivering top-notch productions. One such production was their full-length release, “Werk 80 II”, which entered the top 20 of the German Media Control Charts.
Gothic metal band Leaves’ Eyes was born out of the romantic relationship between singer Liv Kristine Espenæs and guitarist Alexander Krull, who met whilst she was fronting Norway’s Theatre of Tragedy and he Germany’s Atrocity. The pair eventually married and announced their musical union in 2003, with Espenæs quitting Theatre of Tragedy to join Krull and the rest of Atrocity’s lineup (guitarists Thorsten Bauer and Mathias Roderer, bassist Christian Lukhaup, and drummer Nick Barker) to found Leaves’ Eyes and record their 2004 debut album, Lovelorn. Along with its next-year successor, Vinland Saga, the record confirmed the new group’s affinity for theatrical, symphonic goth-metal, as the leading couple living out the ‘beauty and the beast’ vocal roles.
Sammy Aiman Al-Qady (born October 11, 1992), better known by his stage name Farroh, is an Egyptian-American rapper, audio engineer, and song writer. He first started writing music at the age of 12, but never recorded it. At the age of 15, working out of his friends basement, he started producing and recording songs. The name Farroh originated from his Egyptian background. At first he spelled it “Pharaoh”, but then realized it was widely over-used. His first unofficial mixtape Sweatshirts and Snapbacks released April 20th, 2011, in collaboration with artist J-Remy. Songs “Pack the bowl” and “Going to the Moon” received great local recognition. Farroh has recently debuted his official freshman mixtape Chapter 20, which was released August 20th, 2013. Farroh is a sponsored artist under the clothing brand FTD Society (Fresh to Death Society). Farroh has opened up for many big name artists including Ying Yang Twins, Kid Ink, Twista, Steddy P, Mac Miller, and Huey Mack.
Bailiff’s Red Balloon has been a long time coming. It was back in 2008 that the Chicago band released their introductory EP Mm Hmm, a four-track set of slow-burning indie rock with a raw, bluesy edge that, combined with their tight live shows, succeeded in getting plenty of people interested. After such a long gap from EP to full-length any band would have to deliver something extra special to make the wait pay off, and Bailiff don’t disappoint on Red Balloon. Having spent most of 2010 working with engineer Beau Sorenson (Sparkle Horse, Death Cab for Cutie) and producer Jon Alvin (Wax on Radio, Dr Manhattan), the band didn’t just create an extended version of Mm Hmm; the bluesy burn is still there, but the basic sound has been built upon and fleshed out into something that’s even better. Anyone who got on the Bailiff train early on will likely find themselves wanting to champion the band even more after hearing this LP, and anyone who has yet to check them out shouldn’t waste any time diving in. – Frank Krolicki
Waylon Speed, created by Noah Crowther, Chad Hammaker, Kelly Ravin and Justin Crowther, formed after meeting at a local honky-tonk in Burlington, Vermont. Three days and one practice later, Waylon Speed was born. By instilling each band members individual musical influence, they have created a genre all of it’s own. Named after the Reverend Chitwood Hammaker’s son, Waylon, the band is a family owned and operated organization. Waylon Speed is currently touring in support of their album ‘Valance’ released in 2012. They tour nationally year-round and have offered support for many large-name outfits including Jane’s Addiction, My Morning Jacket and Junior Brown. Waylon Speed is not influenced by mainstream music. They write, release and distribute their music independently.
“Waylon Speed is a cross between Metallica and the Lumineers, with an unnecessary dash of Prince showmanship.” Washington Post. 2013.
Since 2012, Lighten Up has been quickly gaining notoriety in the Chicago music scene. Their catchy blues riffs act as a solid platform for them to integrate their jazz and soul backgrounds into one cohesive sound. With the release of their first EP this past Spring, they are already looking to their bright future, with hopefully adding new members, new merchandise, and a full length album. Lighten Up is constantly pushing the boundaries, evolving and progressing within the band itself, and the Chicago blues and soul scene.
The Casual Ties are a rock/funk band originally formed in Macomb, Illinois. featuring Faraz Chaudry on Guitar/Bass, Jordan Nettgen on Keyboard, Ryan Mannix on Guitar/Bass, and last, but most certainly least, Carter Stirtz hitting things hard with sticks.
Formed in early 2013 by drummer/vocalist Rae Amitay (Thrawsunblat, Errant) and studio guitarist/arranger Evan Berry (Wilderun), Immortal Bird released their debut EP, Akrasia, in December 2013. The band quickly garnered a hometown following as well, with the Chicago Reader calling it “sick and greasy black metal that does an admirable job inventing the sound of a mind tearing itself apart.” The band recorded their debut full-length, Empress/Abscess in February 2015 with Pete Grossmann at Bricktop Recording Studio where it was then mixed and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice, Artificial Brain). The album was released on July 14, 2015 and featured a guest vocal performance from John Hoffman of the renowned powerviolence/grind band Weekend Nachos.
Immortal Bird is currently signed to 20 Buck Spin and released their second full-length LP, Thrive on Neglect on July 5, 2019. It was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Cephalic Carnage) and features artwork by Kikyz1313. In June 2019, Kerrang! Magazine named Immortal Bird #23 on their list of the 50 Best American Metal Bands of the Last Decade, and NPR said with the new material, “Immortal Bird nails that skin-crawling claustrophobia with metallic madness, but spaces out its relentlessly sliding grind with prowling hardcore riffs.” Dave Adelson of 20 Buck Spin had this to say about the new record: “Thrive on Neglect is a blistering statement of intent from a band ascending into full bloom.”
Erimha, which means Army or Legion according to Sumerian mythology, was formed in January 2010 by members Ksaos (drums), Kthien (rhythm guitar), Lykan (bass), Gore (vocals) and Alix (lead guitar).
Less than a year after the first guitar riffs were written, Erimha wrote, pre-produced and recorded their first full length album “Irkalla” in September 2010. “Irkalla” was recorded by Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, Mythosis) who, at his Montreal based studio the “Garage Studio” has been recording some of the biggest Montreal metal acts such as: The Agonist, Beneath the Massacre, Mythosis, The Last Felony, Cryptopsy, Neuraxis etc… “After only one recording day, we already knew that Chris was the producer we needed. He’s bringing the best out of everybody. He found the perfect mix of aggressiveness and clarity we were looking for our sound” said Ksaos.
Donaldson also convinced the extremely talented Alissa White-Gluz (The Agonist/Century Media Records) to lend her astonishing voice on the track ”The Legend of Ereshkigal”. Only a few months after self-releasing “Irkalla”, the band signed with IME records (Itchy Metal Entertainment). In 2011, Erimha, mixing Black and Death Metal, brought a strong and high energy set to the province of Quebec, working hard on establishing the band as a respected act on their local scene, which payed off having Diusternas (lead guitar) join on guitars after Alix and Lykan decided to part they’re ways with the fast growing Black/Death Metal act due to personal reasons. In early 2012, Erimha signed C with CB Entertainment (an Ohio based management company). Also, Erimha, out of 260 applications, was chosen as one of the 20 bands that would compete for a spot on the biggest Canadian heavy metal festival “Heavy MTL”. In June 2012, Erimha released their first single “Ascetic”, which shows the new sound and maturity of the Montreal based act. In early 2013, Erimha will be releasing a second single in form of a videoclip and studio sessions have already been booked with Chris Donaldson to start recording they’re second full length album which will be released shortly after the launch of their first videoclip. Prepare yourselves for chaos!…
There are only so many times you can take back that cheating lover or accept excuses from a lazy scrub. It’s easier said than done, but one soul band is taking a stand. The Right Now isn’t going to take it anymore. The Right Now is fed up. And on their second record, The Right Now Gets Over You.
The challenging title is a reality check, but delivered with a smile from singer Stefanie Berecz. “It’s just a representation of the stories in the songs. Nearly every track has a cheating character, or someone who’s had enough of their lover. It’s a mixed bag of empowerment and regret.” Gets Over You continues the “it’s complicated” theme of 2010′s Carry Me Home, although this outing shows Berecz in a darker, seedier role.
Recorded in a cathartic, week-long session in Los Angeles with producer Sergio Rios (Orgone), Gets Over You takes the Chicago septet’s soulful sound to the warm, crackling world of analog tape and vintage instruments. Berecz’s voice, often compared to those of Chaka Kahn and Joss Stone, takes center stage. The band shines with raw, gritty performances and elegant arrangements that are the result of countless hours of performing, rehearsing, and traveling together.
Berecz’s emotionally-charged vocal performance has been the band’s calling card at over 200 shows in the past two years. The Right Now’s electrifying live show — matching suits, choreographed horn section, and all — has earned them a reputation as “dynamic, complex, hip and just downright fun” (Gapers Block).
The past two years saw immense growth for The Right Now, including a sold-out release party at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall; tour dates throughout the Midwest, East, and South; festival appearances at SXSW, North Coast Festival, and Summerfest; and opening stints for Fitz & The Tantrums, George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Bettye Lavette, Otis Clay, Orgone, Kings Go Forth, Jamie Lidell, and Tortured Soul. USA Today and mp3.com featured the band as a favorite, and live TV appearances (WGN) put the Chicago act on the national stage. Placements in a 2011 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and promos for Gilly Hicks and other national retailers also broadened the band’s appeal.
“It takes a man to admit that it’s over,” Berecz confidently croons on “Half As Much.” “But if you can’t, I can do it for sure.” While Stefanie Berecz may have gotten over the man in this song, audiences won’t be getting over her any time soon.
