DR. SHRINKER

With this corpse re-animated in January of 2013 for a few reasons, 2014 will be the 25th anniversary of our ‘Wedding the Grotesque’ demo and we wanted to celebrate somehow. With founding members willing and able, we have decided to once again to kick out the jams. The songs have an energy and excitement to them that we feel are still valid and want the sounds to reach new ears. Being a ‘sub-underground’ band, we know our success will remain limited yet are absolutely blown away by the support of fans old and new.

CHEVY WOODS

“Chevy Who? Chevy Who?” might just sound like a lyric from Wiz Khalifa’s 2011 hit “Taylor Gang,” but there was a point when this was a very common question asked.

Pittsburgh, PA also known as “The Steel City,” is not your average city; it’s a city with a story to tell. Kevin “Chevy” Woods, who was born and raised in Pittsburgh, played sports all throughout high school and college, and began taking it seriously until he was introduced heavily to hustling. The early years of college saw Chevy dividing his time between hustling and rapping, leaving no time for college. Soon after dropping out of college, Chevy began spending more time focusing on rap and spent more time writing and honing his flow and subject matter.

After years of writing and recording in his home studio, Chevy traded in his keyboard for cash, to pay for studio time. While many would think pursuing a rap career is no reason to give up a chance at a serious college sports career, Woods note that his time as an athlete has paid off when rapping and performing. “There’s definitely a connection between music and sports. They are really intertwined when it comes to the mental aspect of it. It’s all about listening and reacting. It’s all about pushing yourself to do your best.”

In 2004, while recording at Pittsburgh’s I.D. Labs Studios, Chevy had an encounter with a fellow young rapper from Pittsburgh by the name of Cameron Thomaz, better known as Wiz Khalifa, that would change his life forever and the two instantly formed a bond. “Me and Wiz, we always had each other’s backs. Since we were both recording at I.D. Labs at the same time, we would hold each other down,” Chevy says of his relationship with Wiz, “even if it was just picking up Wendy’s for the other one on our way to the studio.”

At the time, Chevy was going under the alias, Kev “Tha Hustla” Woods, until one day his friends dubbed him with the new name ‘Chevy.’ “One day my homies just started calling me Chevy as a nickname. I don’t know why they did but it just started to stick. I never really thought twice about it until Wiz heard it and was like ‘That’s dope! Chevy Woods’.”

As the two continued to record, Wiz invited Chevy out on a small 2-week tour. “Once he told me that he wanted me to start going on the road with him, I quit hustling cold turkey. After two weeks, I started preparing for tour life….getting into the mental state of constantly working and writing and recording and really working on my stage presence.”

2004 also saw the release of Chevy’s first mixtape “Hustler’s Dream,” which featured music produced and recorded at both Chevy’s in-home studio and music that he recorded during his time at I.D. Labs. The motivation to take rap, from something that he did in his spare time during his early years of college, to a career came from a place of significant purpose; family. “I’m doing this for my family. It’s a different type of hustle than I was used to. There is so much more that comes with the street hustle. You have to let something go, in order to gain something new.” Woods says on working hard each day at perfecting his rapping, to support his girlfriend and daughter.

Chevy’s time on the road saw the release of several mixtapes including “Red Cup Music” and “The Cookout,”( the latter which was a joint project with Wiz Khalifa), two projects which were created and released during a pivotal time in Chevy’s career. “There was this moment between ‘Red Cup Music’ & ‘The Cookout’ where it just clicked. It was no stopping me from that point on.” Woods always stayed consistent by making music that mirrored how he was raised in the sense of his surroundings, neighborhood and culture.

Touring with Wiz served many purposes aside from the financial aspect. Woods was constantly inspired by the places he was going and the people he was meeting. “Seeing more than Pittsburgh and meeting different people and seeing how they operate. If they’re grinding like that, why aren’t I?”

At a time when Wiz’ popularity was rising, it was easy for many to assume that Chevy began to feel jealous or resentment towards his friend who he came up in the game with. It was actually the opposite; Woods used Wiz’ rise to rap stardom as a motivation tool. “Wiz and I have always been competitive like brothers. He’ll make a record and I’ll hear it and say ‘Oh word? Give me an hour in the studio real quick.’ He pushes me to do better and I push him to do better.”

All of Chevy’s hard work proved worth it on August 6, 2011, when the Rolling Papers World Tour, rolled through Pittsburgh’s Station Square Arena. This was the first time Chevy was touching down on a major stage in Pittsburgh, and was doing so performing his own set. “Everyone was there. From cats you went to high school with, to cats you played with in Little League. It’s all good when you’re travelling around the country, but when you bring it back home and you get that type of love. Man, that’s real.” Chevy recalls about the emotional return back to the Steel City, where he started 7 years prior.

Now, with his latest release, “Gangland,” which was released on June 6, 2012, Chevy is proving that he is here to stay. He’s proving that he’s not just another former hustler trying to make it big as a rapper. He’s got something to say and a story to tell, and wants you to listen.

DANA MICHAEL ANDERSON

He feels that honesty is necessity when heartache and happiness walk hand-in-hand. He blends humor and and tragedy to pull the listener into the music as if they were reading a good book.

GLASS CLOUD

After years of touring and performing around the world with various bands, vocalist Jerry Roush finally has a band to call his own. The former frontman for Sky Eats Airplane and Of Mice & Men has joined forces with 8-string guitarist Joshua Travis [The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza], bassist Travis Sykes and drummer Chad Hasty to create Glass Cloud.

The Hampton, VA-based band is currently in San Diego, CA recording their debut full-length album at Lambesis Studios, with Joshua Travis also serving as producer. Glass Cloud will release the full-length album in late Spring/early Summer 2012 through Equal Vision Records.

Musically, Glass Cloud offers a sense of controlled chaos fueled by Roush’s deep, ferocious growls and distinct, gritty cleans. Travis’ phenomenal guitarwork and ability to constantly surprise listeners stands out as he displays the perfect balance between energetic, driving intricacies and calmer progressions that carry a dark, eerie tone. Sykes and Hasty, graduates of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, rule the rhythm section contributing unique cadences and swinging, jazzy grooves interlaced with softer symphonic touches. Glass Cloud shines as the members deliver some of their heaviest and most technical compositions to date.

Excitement and enthusiasm simply radiates out of the band as they discuss working together in the studio and developing a sound that is all their own. “The collective musicianship and talent level in this band is unbelievable,” explains Travis. “…and to top it off, the guys are all down-to-earth people too. Working on this record has been a lot of fun. We are trying to introduce something organic and ambient into heavy music. Not the typical breakdown heavy, but darker chords upon layers and layers.”

Roush also boasts unabashedly about the remarkable caliber of musical proficiency within the band, and specifically about the creative connection between himself and Travis stating, “From the moment he became involved in this band, he was sending me fully finished tracks left and right, songs that were blowing my mind. Musically, Josh is a beast…the dude is a musical machine. We meshed so well, right from the start, making tracks that had no limits to them. I couldn’t have asked for a better and more prolific guitarist to accompany me in this new musical endeavor. And with Josh being the producer of the debut Glass Cloud record, we know that we are making the exact album that we want to make.”

“We have been working intensely in the studio, but it will definitely pay off when we introduce something new and fresh to the scene,” Travis concludes. “I don’t think I could be more excited about a project.” Glass Cloud will spend 2012 on the road supporting their forthcoming album, with tour dates to be announced soon.

ROBBY KRIEGER’S JAM KITCHEN

Robert Alan Krieger, born January 8, 1946, in Los Angeles, is a musical performer and The Doors guitarist. He attended UCLA. “The first music I heard that I liked was Peter and the Wolf. I accidentally sat and broke the record (I was about seven). Then I listened to rock ‘n’ roll – I listened to the radio a lot – Fats Domino, Elvis, The Platters.

“I started surfing at fourteen. There was lots of classical music in my house. My father liked march music. There was a piano at home. I studied trumpet at ten, but nothing came of it. Then I started playing blues on the piano?no lessons though. When I was seventeen, I started playing guitar. I used my friend’s guitar. I didn’t get my own until I was eighteen. It was a Mexican flamenco guitar. I took flamenco lessons for a few months. I switched around from folk to flamenco to blues to rock ‘n’ roll.

“Records got me into the blues. Some of the newer rock ‘n’ roll, such as the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. If it hadn’t been for Butterfield going electric, I probably wouldn’t have gone rock ‘n’ roll.

I didn’t plan on rock ‘n’ roll. I wanted to learn jazz; I got to know some people doing rock ‘n’ roll with jazz, and I thought I could make money playing music. In rock ‘n’ roll you can realize anything that you can in jazz or anything. There’s no limitation other than the beat. You have more freedom than you do in anything except jazz – which is dying – as far as making any money is concerned.

“In The Doors we have both musicians and poets, and both know of each other’s art, so we can effect a synthesis. In the case of Tim Buckley or Dylan you have one man’s ideas. Most groups today aren’t groups. In a true group all the members create the arrangements among themselves.”

OUTSHINE

Outshine from Gothenburg, Sweden, is a hardrock/metal band with Gothic and Melodic vibes with influences from Type O Negative, Life Of Agony, Tool and dark, melancholy music. The concept of the band was formed in the south of Sweden by guitarist Jimmy Norberg back in the late 1995.

The band started off more as a studio project and between ´95-´03 a number demos was recorded and just a handful legendary shows was performed. Outshine and the demo “Revive” released 2002 marked a start of something bigger. The band was named the best unsigned act in Sweden and this was the starting point for the band as it is today. Founder Jimmy Norberg had a clear picture of where the band should head and the debut EP “Memories” recorded in ’05 got great reviews and radio air time in USA, Sweden, France and Spain. The first full length album “Bad Things Always End Bad” was released in May ’07, followed up by “Until We Are Dead” in 2009 and now the band has released the new album “Prelude To Descent” June 7th 2013. The band went on a Scandinavian tour with Paradise Lost in September 2013.

Between 2006 and spring 2013 Outshine has done 6 US tours, creating a huge fan base, getting a lot of radio airtime and making ground for upcoming tours. Their 2nd album “Until We Are Dead” was released in Europe April 16th 2010 and got great reviews in Swedish as well as in European/US press. The new album “Prelude to Descent” was released June 7th and has gotten great reviews, astonishing viral reach on the web with 19.000 new fans in 3 months and counting. A world wide promotion will be done for the album together with Swedish and European tour dates.

“Until We Are Dead” 2009 and the new album “Prelude To Descent” 2013 was recorded by Svein Jensen at Grand Recordings (M.A.N, Transport League, Hide The Knives, Sister Sin, Troublemakers), produced by Jimmy Norberg and Svein Jensen and mastered by Göran Finnberg (The Haunted, Opeth, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames).

YOUNG LYXX

FRIENDS OF THE UNIVERSE

With a combined experience of 75 years, The FOTU is a supernatural force to be reckoned with. Band leader Andrew Wagner started performing on the mean streets of Iowa City in 2008, and has since honed his craft as a songwriter and lyricist. Combining pop hooks, tasteful three-part harmonies and electro-infused funk – The FOTU has easily found many fans in the Chicagoland area – and continues to grow…

The group started as a rock cover band in 2011 and has since morphed into the self-produced monstrosity it is today. The FOTU has been known to include modified versions of covers – everything from The Beatles, The Talking Heads, Ray Charles and Radiohead – in their sets of original music. It has been said that The FOTU tips bar staff too generously.

The current band line-up, now featuring female vocalist Jenna DiGiulio, has been rehearsing in the woods of Palos Park for the last year – mastering audio-production and unconventional recording techniques.

In various other projects, members of FOTU have been playing together for the last decade in everything from High-School Jazz Bands to The Chicago Blues Fest. The Friends of the Universe‘ free-spirited and socially-minded attitude is evident in both their lyrics and live performance. Are you a friend of the universe?

CALLOW

“Callow = Band of Horses + Roky Erickson + Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. What punk rock would have been had it evolved from The Velvet Underground’s airy slowness rather than their minimalism.” -SLUG Magazine

Callow, consists of Red Moses (lead vocals, guitar), and Sami Knowles (keys, percussion, vocals).

The two combine their musical talents in 2009 after their gardening business went under during America’s economic crash. They sold their belongings to live on the road, and they’ve never looked back. Red is a life-long musician who has been writing music and performing in bands for most of his life. Sami is a professional dancer who has translated her embodied sense of music in an unconventional way; she sings, plays the keys and drums simultaneously.

Their albums Orb Weaver (2012) and Blue Spells (2013) are elegantly dark and sonically searing collections of songs that create rock operatic overtures with shadowy vocals flowing over the memorable, echo-latent instrumentation. Callow is a chillingly talented duo who has committed their lives to creating music, and influencing audiences with their heavy and vivid art songs. – Jordannah, Deli Mag SF

“Callow’s sound is haunting and beautiful, with angst and tension balanced with primal minimalism.” – SF Chronicle

DETHLEHEM

Dethlehem… a band of warriors on a quest to achieve maximum XP and deliver face-melting metal. When their home realm, Ghorusalem (Pittsburgh, PA), fell to an ancient evil, the group of heroes rose together to do battle under the cursed sky! Influenced by melodic metal, progressive rock, maidens in distress, epic solos, RPGs, and delicious ale, Dethlehem brings a unique, tongue-in-cheek stage show to each realm they visit. Huge inflatable sword battles in the crowd, an 8′ tall fog-breathing stage dragon, treasure goblins, video presentations, and beautiful maidens are not at all uncommon at a Dethlehem show.

Lyrically, Dethlehem tell their mythos linearly across a series of albums known as “The Ghorusalem Codex”, with each song telling of their journey to save their land. “Volume I: Enthroned Upon A Spire” (2009) explained the origin of a treasure-hungry, shapeshifting goblin-dragon named Yagolith and his rise to power over the land of Ghorusalem. Residing in the capital city, Dethlehem (the band’s namesake), Yagolith commanded undead armies, ancient dragons, soul-hags and frost giants to do his bidding. Out of this tyranny, the realm’s only defense were the warriors of Dethlehem, banded together from across the land to defeat the evil plaguing their land. Returning home after their victory against Yagolith, “The Ghorusalem Codex, Volume II: Of Magick & Tyranny” (2011) finds the warriors learning that their villages had been destroyed by a new evil. Dregmour, a powerful warlock, is opening ancient portals to an unknown shadow realm to unleash chaotic evil upon Ghorusalem. The warriors of Dethlehem once again band together and quest to completion.

Dethlehem has been leveling up, combining metal, comedy, partying, and fun into an entertaining stage show. Since being selected as a finalist in Metal Insider & Scion’s Top 20 “No Label Needed” unsigned metal band contest in 2010, Dethlehem has picked up momentum with plans to increase their already busy touring schedule. These RPG-Metal warriors have shared the stage with the likes of GWAR, Gojira, Protest the Hero, Powerglove, Alestorm, The Protomen, Last Chance to Reason, Dio Disciples, 3 Inches of Blood, and more! Plans to release a third album to continue their story are in the works for 2014. Make sure to see Dethlehem in a city near you!

SONUS UMBRA

The past is but prologue. Back in the early 90’s, three science students from the national university in Mexico City, Andres Aullet, Ricardo Gómez and Luis Nasser got together to form a band called RADIO SILENCE. From 1991 to 1994, the band played on, gaining a large cult following and a reputation for intense, unpredictable live performances. Inevitably, the band broke up, but the music and the meme lingered on.

In 1995, Nasser and Gómez moved to the East Coast of the USA under the pretense of pursuing scientific doctoral degrees, but all they really wanted was to find other players and continue what RADIO SILENCE had started. Two fruitless years later the search was abandoned and the two drifted apart; Nasser sulked in his apartment and alternated between writing music and working on his dissertation, while Gomez jammed and played with a number of different bands, ranging from punk rock to Spanish baroque troupes (which included the stretchy pants and full peacock garb).

In 1997, Nasser auditioned for a Baltimore-based band KURGAN’S BANE, led by guitarist Pete Laramee and his brother, drummer Jeff Laramee; a crisp, crunchy hard rock band of exceptional musicianship that had parted ways with their bassist and were on the eve of recording their debut album “Search from Sea to Sea”. These sessions resulted in a a good friendship between Nasser and John Grant of Secret Sound studios in Baltimore, and the later discovery of a vast network of websites promoting underground prog rock made him curious to find out what the internet crowd might think of the material performed by RADIO SILENCE, back in the smoggy, boozy daze of Mexico City.

Nasser and Grant set upon the task of embellishing a demo of original material recorded on 8-track tascam tape machine for release. During the course of this project, Nasser invited Gómez and Aullet back to the fold, and the end result was a disc called “Laughter In The Dark” which, to everyone’s astonishment, earned rave reviews, sold out in months, and inked the band a record deal with the now defunct indie label “Moonchild Records”.

Nasser’s musical chemistry with Jeff Laramee made his addition to the band as a full member in 1998 inevitable, and certain unfortunate legalities forced the band to re-name itself as SONUS UMBRA, which in pig latin roughly means “Shadows Made Of Sound”. Since then, they have released three more critically acclaimed albums: “Snapshots From Limbo” in 2000, “Spiritual Vertigo” in 2003 and “Digging For Zeros” in 2005.

SONUS UMBRA went on indefinite hiatus due to the stress of continued existence in spite of vast geographical limitations: Gómez returned to Mexico City in 2000 where he is professor of mathematics at the National University. Nasser is a professor of physics at Columbia, Chicago and remains committed to recording and performing with his main band MIGHT COULD. Aullet is coding furiously in Sandy Point Idaho and Laramee remained steadfast in Baltimore, drumming with Pete Laramee and running a warehouse with his unusual gifts as both stunt fork-lift driver and a master of depraved English.

Working intermittently with his close MIGHT COULD bandmate Andy Tillotson, he and Nasser wrote music that eventually became “Winter Soulstice”. The process began in late 2008 and concluded in April, 2013. A new incarnation of the band was formed with some of the most accomplished veteran musicians of the Chicago rock music scene, and is ready to release the first new album in 8 years and begin promoting the material live.

JAMES AND THE ULTRASOUNDS

James Godwin quietly scribbled things on paper bits while touring U.S. and Europe as the bass player for Jack Oblivian and John Paul Keith. He cautiously started playing them live as a member of the short lived New Mary Jane, which featured 1/2 of Memphis Rock legends The Grifters. During a bumpy and not well remembered summer of 2012 he began recording a batch of songs on a busted up 4 track along with friends/ musicians extraordinaire John Argroves and Dave Shouse. Those songs would become the first Ultrasounds ep “Lovers and Ghosts’, which cost about $30 to make, and sounds as if a cat is trying to claw it’s way out of your speakers.

After about a year of standing around and smoking cigarettes with friend and Memphis guitarist Luke White, the two finally set up a rehearsal with Argroves on drums, and local artist/musician David Johnson on bass.

After a year of shows and writing new songs under their belts, James and The Ultrasounds enter the studio in March to record the follow up to Lovers and Ghosts, with Memphis musicman/media darling Mark Edgar Stuart behind the board, making sure the band doesn’t stink up the joint.

SUPER SUPER

Power pop crew from Rockford, IL known as Super Super cite as main artistic influences such as Cheap Trick, Big Star, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, and Superdrag, all of whom build their walls of sound with a catchy combination of vocal harmonies and melodic guitars. Like these bands, Super Super have a stalwart faith in great guitar tones and solid, natural songwriting. The Super Super style is upbeat, friendly, and unstoppably groovy, built on seemingly simple rhythms that build to bursting in every track. A kind of patient aggression flows in strong undercurrents through their music, full of verve and vivacity that envelops the listener with the ambiance of a relentlessly good time. This undeniably fun sonic experience is at least partially due to the palpable chemistry of the band members.Vocalist, guitarist Mark Gustafson, drummer David Doyle, Jr., and bassist Ian Zander have been playing together for more than ten years.

AMPHIBIAN LARK

Amphibian Lark is a musical collaboration between Simeon Coxe of Silver Apples and Lydia Winn LeVert.

TEN FOOT POLE

Ten Foot Pole was founded in 1983 as Scared Straight.

Scared Straight was a punk band from Simi Valley, California. The band was formed in 1983 by a group of friends and was originally called S.O.F. Original members were Scott Radinsky, Mike Thompson, Gary Gallanes and Dennis Jagard, who started the band to enter a “Battle of the Bands” competition at a local skate rink. After going through several members and name changes, they began playing with some “Nardcore” bands from nearby Oxnard, California, which helped them gain recognition. All of the Scared Straight records were released by Mystic Records.

In the early 1990s they changed their name to Ten Foot Pole. One of the reasons for the name change was to move away from the “straight-edge” reputation that followed the band with a name like Scared Straight. In the beginning, Ten Foot Pole had a reputation of being a more aggressive, hardcore punk band that likes to party and have fun. The band released two albums under their new name with the old lineup: Swill and Rev. After the release of Rev and a split EP with Sweden’s Satanic Surfers, Radinsky was forced to leave the band due to his professional baseball commitments and Ten Foot Pole’s desire to be a full-time touring band. From then on Dennis Jagard took over lead vocals for the band.

The next albums, Unleashed and Insider, developed a new fan base but lost some old time fans who preferred Scott’s voice. This included decision makers at Epitaph Records, and the next album, Bad Mother Trucker, was released on Victory Records, followed by Subliminable Messages on Go-Kart Records. MOON TOOTH

“Gut-thumping prog and punk influenced metal that effortlessly blends the high-adrenaline and technical virtuosity of The Dillinger Escape Plan with the snarl of Mastodon.” – Good Times Magazine

Moon Tooth is the new project of long-time friends and collaborators Nick Lee & Ray Marte. The band formed after the breakup of their previous endeavor, Exemption, which released several albums and made many friends touring the east coast during their seven year run from 2005 – 2012. Determined not to let that band’s dissolve slow them down, they immediately began work on a bigger, bolder, more aggressive project that became known as Moon Tooth.

Moon Tooth finds the pair at a new plateau of focus and energy. They quickly found kinship and camaraderie with vocalist John Carbone (Rice Cultivation Society) and bassist Vin Romanelli (Give Up The Goods) who both a bring a great deal of personality to the band’s sound. This band is eager to crush you with some devastating new jams. First EP entitled simply “FREAKS” was released 7/25/13 & recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ray Marte & Moon Tooth at Westfall Recording Co. in Farmingdale, NY from Winter – Summer 2013 but their live show is where the band truly delivers and with many new tunes already in the works for a full-length they will all assure you that you haven’t heard anything yet.
