GHARANA
The word gharana comes from the Hindu word ‘ghar,’ which means ‘house’ or ‘family.’ In music, the word takes on a deeper meaning, relating to a school or lineage of musicians.
Gharana is a trio consisting of Konrad Kupiec on guitar and sitar, Alex Farro on tabla and percussion, and Matt Ares on bass guitar. The group’s incarnation began when Alex and Konrad met while studying Indian classical music under the same teacher. Blending their studies of Indian music with jazz and rock influences, they’ve formed a young fusion band that will continue to grow and develop; much like the melody of a raga or the mathematical expansion of an Indian rhythm.
Gharana makes their debut performance September 11, 2016 at Reggie’s with the Alex Skolnick Trio.
