The moment just before a spark becomes a flame, the familiar friction of a key sliding home into a lock or the dilated pupils of a future lover sitting across from us – it is at once new and familiar. The music of Sundae + Mr. Goessl generates a like feeling of the familiar mixed with the new.
Sundae + Mr. Goessl is a new collaboration between resident Seattle, WA musicians Jason Goessl and Kate Voss. The duo embodies a spirit reminiscent of 1930s pop; repackaging classics with nuanced stylistic detours, ultimately imparting a ‘fresh’ vintage patina to the songs. Voss’s sultry and honey imbued vocals mixed with Goessl’s impossibly layered guitar work comfortably ebbs and flows while transcending the definition of ‘pop’.
Goessl is widely known for his venerable guitarmanship and possesses a deep and diverse well of genres to draw from. Whether it be Brazilian (Brazil Novo), country (Jessica Lynne and the Cousins) dub rock cross over (Trimtab), surf/western (The Pornadoes) or funk (The Bayous), he approaches the music with studied curiosity and stamps it with his indelible signature sound.
Voss has steeped for over a decade in vocal and piano study and performance. She appears regularly around Seattle lending her unique sounds to a myriad of styles ranging from Indie/Pop to operatic to Americana to ensemble music, but she proves most delightful and captivating when she injects her verve into such old-school tunes.
