MIKKEY HALSTED
MIKKEY HALSTED

Website
In a congested rap landscape a militant MC with respect for the art of wordplay, musical integrity and a respect for the sacred power of music has emerged from Chicago, hip hop’s latest hot bed for talent. Up steps Mikkey Halsted a product of the Southside of Chicago's notorious Wild 100's section. If the master’s degree in education does not hint at the extraordinary aptitude of this master of ceremony then certainly the first entrée into the music of Mikkey will leave a listener refreshed with the idea that the revolution just might be closer than previously contemplated.

BIG WIZ

Website
You can search far and wide throughout the landscape of hip hop, but you’d be hard pressed to find an artist of Jibril Page’s caliber. Armed with a calculated delivery and painfully honest lyrics, the 23 year-old wordsmith better known as Big Wiz has carved out an undeniable mark in the Chicago hip hop scene and is ready to play doctor to the masses and inject the game with a much needed dose of truth serum. Billing himself as “the rapper next door”, Wiz may consider himself just an average guy, but his music is anything but. Like most youth in urban circles, Wiz fell in love with hip hop as soon as he was introduced to it. After being inspired to craft his own rhymes in 1994 after hearing Outkast’s “Southernplayalisticadillacmusic” , Wiz, being a true student of music, began to develop his own style, first from combining the styles of his musical favorites like 2pac, Jay-Z, Outkast, Gil Scott Heron and Curtis Mayfield as well as local legends like Crucial Conflict, Psycho Drama and Twista.

Enlisting old friend JON PATRICK LUBY to fill the drum chair, the two immediately retreated to the shores of Lake Geneva WI, where their similar tastes in music and passion for organic, classic style Rock N Roll spawned the songs from the bands 2007 release, GENESIS.

Cains & Abels

Website
We live in Chicago, Illinois, and we try to have a lot of fun with our friends. We do rock and roll. The album that we made during 2008 is out now on States Rights Records. The album is called Call Me Up, and it's about wanting to connect with people in a universal way. It's also about wanting to connect with specific people in a very small, desperate way. Some of it is a little sad, but it's also really uplifting.

Big Science

Website
Their sound is both intricate and expansive, with Richards and Peña providing a nimble and solid foundation over which Hendrix and Clark build echoing soundscapes. Simply: another band made up of four friends, entrenched, dedicated, and in love with the act of making music that captivates and exalts the tones of being, of youth, of the city.

The Minneapolis Henrys

Website
"The Henrys craft nice, tight songs, create momentum and sustain it on both ballads and percussion driven rockers. Last I checked the weather online, both Minneapolis and Chicago, where the band now resides, were in the negatives. Thank god those poor souls have some hot, good ol’ fashioned Minneapolis rock to warm their freezing bones."

SHAI HULUD

Website
Shai Hulud is a metalcore band. The name comes from the giant sandworms in Frank Herbert's Dune. The band is famous within the hardcore scene for their often complex compositions, misanthropic lyrics and revolving-door line-up. Originally hailing from Florida, the band later moved up to Poughkeepsie, NY. The two mainstay members of Shai Hulud are considered to be Matt Fox (guitar) and Matt Fletcher (originally guitar, but then moved on to bass), who together write most of the band's musical output. After the release of 2003's "That Within Blood Ill-Tempered" and a number of tours going into the subsequent year, vocalist Geert Van Der Velde decided to leave the band. Initially, most people took this as the end of Shai Hulud, despite their previously high membership turnover rate, and this seemed to be the case until Matt Fox and Matt Fletcher came out on the band's homepage indicating that they would not be breaking up; instead, the band would change name to The Warmth of Red Blood and continue what had started with Shai Hulud. At the same time, they also started requesting that anyone who considered themselves up for the challenge of taking over vocal duties record a demo of themselves performing the track "Whether To Cry Or Destroy" (quite similar to the audition fellow hardcore maniacs The Dillinger Escape Plan did when auditioning new vocalists). In March of 2006, the band announced they were abandoning the moniker 'The Warmth Of Red Blood' and returning to the name Shai Hulud.

BURY YOUR DEAD

Website
The old saying goes, "If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger." That adage certainly applies to Bury Your Dead. The Massachusetts band, featuring drummer Mark Castillo, vocalist Mat Bruso, guitarists Slim and Eric Ellis, and bassist Bubble, have broken up, gotten back together, gone through 14 band members and 9 tour vehicles (including buckets of bolts like a Hyundai Accent and a Kia Sefia), but they're still together and their stronger than ever on their new album, Beauty And The Breakdown, which is easily their most focused effort to date. In the Bury Your Dead tradition, the music is heavier than granite, but the band's approach and collective attitude is light, fun and carefree. That's what sets BYD apart from their peers, the fact that they do things you don't expect. They keep you guessing at every turn, either making you bob your head to their catchy melodies or making you mosh your brains out to their ferocious, infectious breakdowns. As Slim says, "It's always down and dirty, hustle and bustle with Bury Your Dead." And that equals a damn good time. Bury Your Dead: fusing fun and ferocity like no one else can. -Amy Sciarretto

And fans of My Chemical Romance, HIM and AFI will discover a great new dark voice, the power and majesty that is I Am Ghost.

When Norma Jean frontman Josh Scogin left the band as their debut release, "Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child," was hitting stores, a distraught hardcore following sought after the album to cherish what seemed to be the last remnants of the powerful frontman. Little did they know that 2 years later Scogin would return. This time, with his same charismatic stage presence in tact, and a brand new ensemble cast, Atlanta, GA proudly presents: The Chariot. The music is tumultuous, the screams are menacing, and the album, "Everything is Alive, Everything is Breathing, Nothing is Dead, and Nothing is Bleeding," is guaranteed to astound listeners with its perpetual brutality.

Illinois Leadership Seminars (ILS) is a 100% volunteer 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission since 1977 has been to unleash the leadership potential of Illinois youth. We realize this mission through an annual, multi-day leadership seminar as well as a series of single day leadership seminars. High school sophomores are chosen to represent their school from all over the state of Illinois at our multi-day seminar held each year in the first few weeks of June. From exploring different styles of leadership to hearing people speak about how their leadership qualities affect them in everyday life, the participants develop a strong love for leadership and the desire to make a difference in their own communities. Past participants of the seminar form the ILS Alumni Association, whose members remain active leaders, producing events to help the organization itself as well as the community at large. We at Illinois Leadership Seminars don’t tell our participants what to think, or even how to think but instead stress the importance of careful thought for our world’s future leaders.

BLACK DAHLIA MURDER
BLACK DAHLIA MURDER

Website
Not only a cool band name but a very cool band! These guys fuck some serious shit up. This has a lot of the elements in extreme music: blasting, heavy drumming, melodic riffs with harmonies galore, sick black metal vocals, and pretty good growling. Songs are intelligently structured and remind of metal juggernaut's At the Gates, Dissection and Carcass . This band goes for many riffs that require the fast-tempo thrash beat and others that just blast. Their riffs are very melodic, so melodic in fact that some of their shredding ventures off in happy progressions coinciding with darker chord chugging. The guitarists sound to be fans of the European melodic Death Metal scene.

OBSCURA

Website
The progressive German death metal band OBSCURA was founded in 2002 by guitarist/vocalist Steffen Kummerer and drummer Jonas Baumgartl. The band caused a stir when they - out of nowhere - toured as support for SUFFOCATION on their European tour in 2006 and when they independently released their debut album 'RETRIBUTION' that same year. The release of the debuet album followed a second European tour, this time as headliner, in 2007. After several lineup changes, Kummerer enlisted a new team of virtuoso musicians. Late 2007, OBSCURA added drummer Hannes Grossmann (ex-NECROPHAGIST) and fretless bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling (ex-PESTILENCE) as new permanent members. The group's latest addition, guitarist Christian Muenzner (ex-NECROPHAGIST), came into the ranks early 2008.

HATESPHERE

Website
The story of HateSphere takes its beginning a long time ago. In 1993 the three high-school mates Jesper Moesgaard (drums), Claus Nielsen (vocals?)and Frantz Dhin (guitar) started a band called Cauterized. None of the members had ever tried to play before, and they logically started out playing cover tracks of their favourite bands such as Slayer and Sepultura. They quickly changed the name to Necrosis and continued rehearsing cover tracks in their humble rehearsing room in the local school in Odder, Denmark. If it was the smell attracking him, I cannot say, but some way one little school boy named Peter Lyse Hansen got hold of the information, that Necrosis was searching for another guitar-player, and when he realised, that they were playing death metal, he contacted them, because he liked this form of music and needed someone to play with. They accepted him, and they began rehearsing tracks like "Dead skin mask" and "Seasons in the abyss" by almighty Slayer, "Hollowman" by Entombed and "Dead embryonic cells" by Sepultura. Luckily for you it is not possible to hear how it sounded, because all traces of the early works of Necrosis have been erased for good... and we mean LUCKILY FOR YOU!!!!

Predetermined in the mind of The Reanimator at The Void, Grave Robber was unleashed upon an unsuspecting, pre-apocalyptic Earth, A.D. 2005. As wounded and mutilated souls suffering curses unfathomable, death was their eternal verdict. Once submitting to The Reanimator as their Master, inviting The Ghost to indwell within them, and electing to die to themselves, the zombie slaves escaped the clutches of the grave. Now, these devil's rejects arm themselves with sonic, vibratory executions and images of horrific realities, bringing an onslaught of sound and warning that will ring into eternity. Rest assured, you will be afraid. You will be very afraid. Fans of The Misfits, Alice Cooper, Type O Negative, Gwar, Kiss, Danzig, and Rob Zombie will find themselves feeling as though they strolling in familiar musical history, yet simultaneously wading through a dense mire of uncharted territory. There's nothing more terrifying than the unknown. Grave Robber is the one band that can hold your hand on a decidedly horrifying romp, leading you safely to the other side. Heed the call of Grave Robber. Die and escape the grave, or die eternally.

Fast forward to more recent history; Hoagy and Colin from The Massacres, along with Brad Gravetone and Chris Ridiculous got together to jam some tunes, looking for something to satisfy their cravings for punk, metal, horror and that incidental music you hear from time to time in the old Super Mario Bros game.

ORDER FROM CHAOS

Website
Order from Chaos, a trio consisting of Pete Helmkamp (vocals/bass), Chuck Keller (guitar) and Mike Miller (drums), was formed in Kansas City, Missouri during 1987, playing a mixture of old school thrash, black and death metal, influenced by the likes of Venom, Bathory and Celtic Frost. The band released a trio of demos in 1988, until a fourth (Crushed Infamy), which sold 1000 copies, attracted the attention of Putrefaction Records who released the Will to Power 7″ EP, limited to 1100 copies. The band then signed a record deal with Wild Rags in 1989, who released cassette versions of the Crushed Infamy demo and Will to Power. A final demo, Alienus Sum, was released in 1992 by the band, featuring three rough mixes from their delayed debut album and a couple of rehearsal tracks; an official cassette version of the demo was released through Chilean label Hexateuc Torment. Despite being recorded in April/May 1991, Order from Chaos’ debut album, Stillbirth Machine, was finally released in 1993 through Wild Rags, despite the label dropping the band in November 1992. Around the same time, the album was also released by Greek label Decapitated Records (now Unisound Productions). This version, which differs from the Wild Rags in terms of artwork and layout and contains numerous textual errors, is apparently considered a bootleg version by the band. The album was given official re-relases by Osmose Productions in 1998 (including the Crushed Infamy demo) and Nuclear War Now! in 2008 (on both black and clear yellow vinyl).
A series of further EPs were recorded and released throughout 1994 on various labels (Jericho Trumpet on Gestapo, Live: Into Distant Fears on Eternal Darkness and Plateau of Invincibility on Shivadarshana), followed by a second full-length, Dawn Bringer, on Shivadarshana, before the band decided to call it quits in 1995. After Shivardashana folded, French label Osmose picked up tracks recorded in 1995 for Order from Chaos’ third and final album and released An Ending in Fire in 1998, as well as re-releasing their debut.
Pete Helmkamp went on to form death metal act Angelcorpse, as well as writing a book on occultism, entitled The Conqueror Manifesto: Capricornus Teitan. Chuck Keller and Mike Miller went on to form retro black/thrash band Ares Kingdom and blackened death metal act Vulpecula. With interest in Order from Chaos still prevalent in the extreme metal underground, Merciless records released a compilation of demos, 1994 live tracks and rehearsal sessions, entitled Imperium – The Apocalyptic Visions, in July 2005.

Girls Mud Wrestling

MUD QUEENS

Website
Spawned from the turmoil of a summer night absinthe binge, the Mud Queens of Chicago was meant to be the answer to Chicago's lack of dirty fun. Initially, the idea was to just have a big party in the backyard with a kiddie pool and mud. But - as I soon realized - mud wrestling deserves more than a kiddie pool. This city needed an event. An event to break the monotony. An event that smacks all the pretentious "hipness" across the face and brings back the true nature of fun: DIRT. This is not the stoic, introspective form of Chicago culture. This is the mud-slinging, hootin' and hollerin' kind of culture that is the Mud Queens of Chicago.

Realizing some good ole' rock and roll was a necessity, we enlisted the help of The Billy Carter Band. Being the good Southern boys that they are, they provided insight on the pros of mud vs. cole slaw and other potentially disastrous decisions. The Queens band has morphed over the years, but our rock and roll values remain. The Mud Queens conquer a new venue with each show - just to keep everyone on their toes. Don't thing you can do mud wrestling in your living room? Just wait. Our humble beginnings in a friend's loft made us defy obstacles just as the new spaces will. In the true nature of dirt and violence, the Mud Queens donate a portion of our proceeds to the Young Women's Empowerment Project. Although we really don't need a legitimate reason to get dirty, it makes us feel good. As long as there is mud, we'll keep slinging and swinging.

The songs come from the spirits of this old ground, and our blood seeps back into it. The moonshine, labor, pine trees, and glorious heritage of music will keep us sane at least till tomorrow. Down by the river, winkin at the shadows and standin in the water. Red Clay River has seemed to have found a trail that leads toward town. But then again, maybe there is no way out of this, unless it includes the footstomps that keep time with the banjo's skin. Red Clay is keeping the sounds of ghosts riding through the holler on their four-board pine coffins. And they're comin for you boy, they're comin for you....

MR. BLOTTO

Website
Mr. Blotto was born in Chicago as an off-night vehicle for musicians who loved each others playing but were in different bands at the time. The only rule was that they would only play what they loved. That philosophy continues today and has led Mr. Blotto into unique musical situations.

Mr. Blotto takes the Jam band asthetic into areas unfamiliar to the standard Jam Scene. They have been known to cover entire albums by Led Zepplin and the Who as well as perform entire shows of Country and Reggae. Artists as diverse as the Grateful Dead, the Flaming Lips, Willie Nelson and The Velvet Underground have seen their material interpreted by Mr. Blotto in the 2000+ shows the band has performed in the last 15 years, yet covers only pepper the bands hefty catalog of original material stemming from five studio albums and other unreleased crowd favorites.

LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH
LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH

Website
The legal last name to Autarch, vocalist for Lightning Swords of Death, is Loathing. If that doesn't prove that the group consists of some evil dudes, then just wait until you see the menaces live. Need a better picture? Imagine if Watain was from Los Angeles, left behind the maggots and had some doomier parts. In other words, Lightning Swords of Death don't dress in theatrical costume. Just leather and bullet belts. And their sound is as fierce as their attitude.

U-MELT
U-MELT

The spirit of the progressive rock era - the readiness to experiment, the premium on precision and the openness to move beyond preconceived boundaries - lives in the music and ethos of U-Melt. The untraditional sound comes from varied backgrounds of the men who make up the New York based band: one of the most electrifying young guitarists playing today, guitarist Rob Salzer began his music career as a classically trained violinist; keyboardist Zac Lasher studied theater at Emerson College and gave up the lullabies of Broadway for the thrill of rock and roll; bassist Adam Bendy has a degree in music performance and drummer George Miller paraded with the West Virginia Mountaineer Marching Band.

HOLLOWPOINTS

Website Listen
While the tempos occasionally work their way into a thrash, the playing is surprisingly rock oriented (especially the guitars, with actual solos!) and the vocals on the Social Distortion side of punk hoarse but melodic. This Seattle band has a lot to say, about American society's passive acquiescence to its government, warped political leaders, street culture, drugs and underclass, and the generally shattered dreams of America circa late 2004.
