THE LOYAL DIVIDE

Website Listen
There remains one true payoff for a musician -the release of performance. Chicago’s Loyal Divide understands this well. To witness their live show is to witness a channeling of heaped aggravation; to hear them is to hear the musical approximation of fevered confession. Truly a live act, Loyal Divide knows how to produce electricity from frustration –frustration with poverty, each other, and the road. The band looks forward to only one thing: leaving all the sludge behind for a brief moment of on-stage catharsis, in turn strengthening their bond and legitimizing their hard work. When not performing, the group goes subterranean, retreating to their basement, away from the outside world, socializing with no one but themselves and their instruments. In an effort to stave off boredom, the group has forever committed to developing their sound; something along the seams of the genres they adore most: Hip Hop, Ambient, Shoegaze, and Pop.

TENKI

Website
Tenki draws its influences from all over the map. Their songs feel Britpoppy, but the instrumentation and occasional forays into other sounds. Although Tenki's sound isn't like Built to Spill's, each group shares an ability to write big, melodic songs that hint at prog rock without ever becoming pretentious in concept or ostentatious in execution. The overall feel of the music ends up being moody in the way that Marquee Moon is.

TORO TORO TORO!!!

Website
Toro, Toro, Toro!!! is an exercise in tension and release. The Chicago power trio mixes, sparse atmospheric slowcore, serpentine crescendos, wall of sound caterwauls, box step waltzes, and Arabic hymns with full on rawk action. Toro, Toro, Toro!!! was conceived in an ill heated rehearsal space on a very cold evening in November 2004. After a 6 month hiatus, longtime songwriting partners Chris OConnell and Marco Delgado reconvened in September 2004 to begin composing music for a project that would feature their most ambitious and focused work to date. A cavalier 25 year old drummer Zafar Musharraf answered the online advertisement that Marco and Chris had been running for 3 months straight. The meeting of these three musicians resulted in an immediate personal and musical connection, as each musician possessed the same level of drive, discipline and commitment to creating and performing with total abandon and focus.

THE HONORARY TITLE

The Honorary Title is Jarrod Gorbel and Aaron Kamstra. Gorbel bares his soul using his soaring voice and intricately worded narrative, while multi-instrumentalist Aaron Kamstra augments the melodies using an assortment of synths, organ and piano parts. Drawing on an eclectic range of influences that includes Elvis Costello, Bright Eyes and Jeff Buckley, The Honorary Title combines raw emotion with pop hooks and remarkably poetic lyrics to write songs that defy simple genre classifications.

AFTER MIDNIGHT PROJECT
AFTER MIDNIGHT PROJECT

Website
The After Midnight Project is a hard-edged alternative-rock band that can best be compared to Incubus and Nine Inch Nails. Songwriter Evigan pens lyrics that tug at your heart while stimulating your intellect.

JOSEPHINE COLLECTIVE

Website
Josephine Collective, the brainchild of seven young men from the outskirts of Kansas City, play music because they have to. You can hear it in the irrepressible pop-rock they make - a passionate, unpretentious joyful noise that comes surging out of them both onstage and off. There are seven members, with an average age of 19, so it’s quite a racket: a blur of music, activity, jokes, and laughter - in short, a brotherhood.

SHATTERED FAITH

Website
Shattered Faith has been writing and performing original punk rock since 1978 and are recognized as pioneers in the first wave of Southern California punk rock bands (like Social Distortion, TSOL, Black Flag, Fear, Circle Jerks, & many others in the late 70's). These bands lived hard and fast, challenged authority, played loud, and ultimately defined the SoCal punk scene for generations to come. The members of Shattered Faith made their mark on the scene with their dark, melodic, upbeat sound grinding out punk rock classics like 'Reagan Country', 'I Love America', 'Right is Right', and 'Trilogy'. Over the years the band has developed a loyal following that continues to this day.

Shouldn't more people, specifically lovers of old school crossover thrash, know about Missouri's CROSS EXAMITION? Of course they should. Inspired by the usual suspects (D.R.I., SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, S.O.D., etc), and walking the same path tread by bands like MUNICIPAL WASTE, It's a wild ride and an outlandishly good time. The bands one mission is surely to collapse in a stinking heap of troubled youth and vomit by the time the proceedings have drawn to a close. Rather than coming off sloppy or amateurish, the boys manage to remain together while charging full speed ahead, offering a sonic brew that is both calamitous and fabulously comedic.

TERROR
TERROR

Website
Quite possibly the most uncompromising band in hardcore, Terror ignors current musical trends and has assiduously carved themselves a path in the hardcore scene. Absent of cheesy gimmicks or fly by night trends, Terror has taken the ethics and straightforward guitar assault of old school veterans like "The Cro-Mags" and "Agnostic Front" and effortlessly added their rapid fire drum lines and trademark double fisted vocal attack from front man, Scott Vogel. The band's resurgence of old school hardcore has helped to breathe life to a stagnant genre.

CEALED KASKET
CEALED KASKET

Website
Cealed Kasket's live show is a frenetic medieval horror opera set in the dark ages, a presentation of barbaric hedonistic rock and roll so powerful it would reduce Alice Cooper to prison rape bait. The Onion called it " Over-the-top mock-metal played with enough death-rock affectation to make Marilyn Manson look like the master of subtlety." Equal parts comedy and tragedy, their rabid fan base comes not only for the music but for the theatrical experience-to be a warrior, to be a part of the battle, to join their heroes onstage with swords raised and blood boiling. Drinking contests, shouting matches, special effects, knights, wenches and backstage sluttin' maximize audience participation. Special Effects by Bad Dog Efx (LucasFilm Ltd/ 20Th Century Fox / Universal Pictures), and medieval set design by David Krause (Red Moon Theatee) set the tone for onstage dragon slaying debauchery as the crowds roar aids the band in pulling the proverbial and literal sword from the stone.

NEBULA
NEBULA

Website
Nebula are the full embodiment of heavy-psych rock: high-energy electric blues, lead-footed psychedelic warriors, rock & roll road dogs and the best damned band to come down the pike in a long, long time. If you're unconvinced, their latest havoc-inducing platter, Atomic Ritual, will send you preaching at the pulpit of Nebula.

TOTIMOSHI

Website
Half the battle in describing Totimoshi to the uninitiated is in making people understand that they are not, despite what some might believe, the second coming of the Melvins. What Totimoshi are is actually a highly disciplined, focused band with a sound like sonic impressionists triangulating a signal between the points of stoner rock, old-school industrial (with its ties to the Fluxus movement, noise, and free-improv), and Latin music. It’s these first two points that get them compared to bands like the Melvins; the third is what makes them radically different from all those other bands.

LUCID GROUND

Website
Lucid Ground is heavy, melodic, radio-friendly modern rock. Immediately catchy. With their pummeling rhythm and thick bass they lay a foundation for huge hooks and biting guitar grit.

EVERYBODY OUT!
EVERYBODY OUT!

CRIME IN STEREO

Website
The basis for the band was simple: play fast, aggressive, hardcore punk with lyrics that are uncompromising and genuine. Their vision did not involve marketing themselves to fourteen year old mallrats; rather they wanted to make music that represented the true essence of their scene. With immediate comparison to bands like Silent Majority, Dag Nasty, Embrace, Kid Dynamite and Gorilla Biscuits, CIS knew they were doing justice to the music they loved.

FAKE PROBLEMS

Website Listen
Originally planned as a solo outing for vocalist/guitarist Chris Farren, Fake Problems occupy the space between altcountry, folk, and indie pop with an added dose of punk D.I.Y. appeal. Fake Problems first documented their sound on the album Watching the Bull Get the Matador, though it had more electronic undertones than the twangy countryfolkrock (which could evoke images of early Against Me alongside Whiskeytown) later releases would showcase further.

MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT

Website
It's definitely a triumph when a band can keep the attention of someone who possesses a near-ADHD attention span (like myself) with songs that haughtily surpass and defecate on the ten-minute mark. Their sound is as equally warm and inviting as it is ballistic and unrelenting and they make the most with the space and time they give themselves to build, layer, pillage, kill and destroy before starting the process all over again. Fuck Ritalin when you've got Mouth of the Architect. - Decibel Magazine

THE ATLAS MOTH

Website
Hailing from Chicago, The Atlas Moth take their bluesy hometown roots and combine that with New Orleans style sludge & 60s psychedelic. Gritty and raw, yet thought out and insightful. If you grew up living in a swamp, wearing a Black Sabbath T-Shirt, and eating nothing but fried chicken, this is your band.

Created on the desire to make ears bleed and the weak beg for mercy. Soaking all those who cross their path in yellow sticky bile -slicing and dicing across the airwaves; Impaled, infamous for their banned album artwork will make your stomach curl but it'll be worth it.

ILLOGICIST

Website
Illogicist(from Italy) is a violent sonic combination of technical ability, rhythmic asymetry, melodic sickness and lyrical frustration created to reflect a dynamic and emotional vision of suffering and introspection, a mix of sonic violence and technical intent. A unique metal hybrid but not without a heavy influence from the late great Schuldiner.

MARUTA

To sum it all up, this group is basically three humble individuals simply doing what they love to do best: playing some fucking grind. They live it. They breathe it.

DUCK DUCK GOOSE

Website
Duck Duck Goose was formed around the beginning of 06. It started off as being a complete joke and a way to blow time. But as im sure you can guess they found them selves knee deep and in love with what they were putting together. Drastic tempo shifts and time signature changes mixed in a nicely boiled broth of various styles of music. The boys strive on writing music that will be fun to them and for everyone else.

THIS OR THE APOCALYPSE

Website
Exhibiting a veteran-like display of confidence and focus, This Or The Apocalypse’s accelerated evolution redefines how bands come into their own. Taking flight alongside regional peers A Life Once Lost, This Day Forward and August Burns Red, TOTA tightrope walks between masterfully crafted time signatures, dense rock grooves and melodic atmosphere. Their music combines the precision and technical prowess of Meshuggah with the raw, emotive urgency of Misery Signals: A sound that is loud, compelling, and unique. As if the entity of the band emerged through natural selection over the members themselves, the band’s resilient DIY ethos prevails in everything they create.

TIM BARRY

Website
For a guy who loves the leisurely rhythms of southern life, it’s been a hectic couple of months for Tim Barry: he’s already toured the states twice with Avail, the cult fave hardcore/rock/punk band he’s fronted since 1991; jetted to Europe for a string of solo dates; and put down ten tracks for a solo disc, Rivanna Junction, on indie label Suburban Home.

SUNDOWNER

Website
Twangy, booze soaked folk punk from Chris McCaughan with an ensemble band of Chicago’s best and brightest and a predilection toward smoky bars, Midwest winters, heartbreak, friendship, grit, melody, love, loss, loneliness, and hope.
