There remains one true payoff for a musician -the release of performance. Chicago’s Loyal Divide understands this well. To witness their live show is to witness a channeling of heaped aggravation; to hear them is to hear the musical approximation of fevered confession. Truly a live act, Loyal Divide knows how to produce electricity from frustration –frustration with poverty, each other, and the road. The band looks forward to only one thing: leaving all the sludge behind for a brief moment of on-stage catharsis, in turn strengthening their bond and legitimizing their hard work. When not performing, the group goes subterranean, retreating to their basement, away from the outside world, socializing with no one but themselves and their instruments. In an effort to stave off boredom, the group has forever committed to developing their sound; something along the seams of the genres they adore most: Hip Hop, Ambient, Shoegaze, and Pop.

Tenki draws its influences from all over the map. Their songs feel Britpoppy, but the instrumentation and occasional forays into other sounds. Although Tenki's sound isn't like Built to Spill's, each group shares an ability to write big, melodic songs that hint at prog rock without ever becoming pretentious in concept or ostentatious in execution. The overall feel of the music ends up being moody in the way that Marquee Moon is.

Toro, Toro, Toro!!! is an exercise in tension and release. The Chicago power trio mixes, sparse atmospheric slowcore, serpentine crescendos, wall of sound caterwauls, box step waltzes, and Arabic hymns with full on rawk action. Toro, Toro, Toro!!! was conceived in an ill heated rehearsal space on a very cold evening in November 2004. After a 6 month hiatus, longtime songwriting partners Chris OConnell and Marco Delgado reconvened in September 2004 to begin composing music for a project that would feature their most ambitious and focused work to date. A cavalier 25 year old drummer Zafar Musharraf answered the online advertisement that Marco and Chris had been running for 3 months straight. The meeting of these three musicians resulted in an immediate personal and musical connection, as each musician possessed the same level of drive, discipline and commitment to creating and performing with total abandon and focus.

The Chinese Telephones sound like ripped-sweater, beer-stained early Replacements, the smart, rough pop punk propulsion of Rivethead, and letting it rip in a Milwaukee basement, hoping that you don't knock yourself on the ceiling from jumping around too much. It's great duct-tape, stained shirts, stinky pants, smart DIY punk.
