Audrey Luv's Jazz Website
Audrey’s current jazz endeavor is a throw back to the old standards that many of us are familiar with today. “I am playing with some really talented musicians right now….I wanted a pretty open minded group of musicians to work with….musicians that enjoy working and re-working a tune to give just the right vibe.” She found those qualities in a few Chicago musicians that make up her new trio - Mike Frisch ..s, Jeffery Kipnis on upright bass and Jose Ormaza on drums – the trio has a great low key vibe that is easy to listen to and great to dance to. The band plays homage to the days when you walked into a jazz joint and the smoky sounds of the era enveloped your mood and embodied everything that you were, knew, and felt. She says, “It’s like listening to the journeys of those who came before us – yeah, that old jazz kind of has that beautiful sadness about it that connects you to your own …a kind of wonderful nostalgia – the music just let’s you feel.”
Jonathan Bass Quintet Website
The Jonathan Bass Quintet is a modern jazz ensemble with influences spanning from A to Zappa, but with an emphasis on creating, performing, and recording original material. The quintet is currently operating in Chicago. Each member has a very different approach to the music which is welcomed by all in the ensemble. Very simply put, they care about making music.

Quite possibly the best live rock band on the planet. They never fail to entertain with their train wreck approach to country. Subtlety is for the weak, so they've chosen the path of optimum mayhem and tomfoolery. In their rollicking career, they have been called everything from the flagship act of the alternative country "movement" to pure butchery. Both are likely to be correct.

Blackbird RaumWebsite
What kind of music is Blackbird RAUM? We have no idea, leave the name of the genre for some hack critic to invent. We're influenced by american string band music of the nineteen twenties, anarcho-punk bands like CRASS and a score of other disparate and incongruous bullshit too numerous to mention.
How we think of ourselves: in the same way that gypsy bands like Taraf de Haidouks feel equally comfortable playing village weddings and large concert halls, we're equally comfortable playing squats, parking lots, and riots as we are playing big folk festivals like Folklife in Seattle. In the same way that your local klezmer band act as emmisaries from their tightly knit jewish community to the world at large, we act as emmisaries from your local tightly knit community of anarchists and squatters to the outside.
Black Bear Combo Website
Black Bear Combo is a four or five member brass/reed band. Our sound is a raucous mutt inspired by traditional music from eastern Europe and the Balkans, filtered through our own noise/freejazz/rock backgrounds- We began in 2002 and with varying lineups have played many shows with many great bands- We’ve brought our sound to bars, parties, street corners, local tv, radio stations, weddings, a funeral, and parades in Chicago, New Orleans, New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, Seattle and points between-
Di Nigunim Website
The NIGUN (from the Hebrew 'lenagen': play music) is a simple, wordless and easy to remember, often religious folk tune, usually composed by a rabbi or a member of a 'hoyf' (rabbinical court), sometimes borrowed from the local folk or foreign tunes and 'sanctified' ('mekadesh zayn a nign')! Sung repetitively and with 'kavanah' (concentration) by all the members of a community, it bears (among prone subjects!) a kind of mystic ecstasy. The 'tish nigunim' accompanied meals, the 'Deveykus nigunim', often arrhythmic, were dedicated to God, the 'Gass'n nigunim' used for the processionals and the 'treredike nigunim' for meditation and crying. The nigunim are usually sung with onomatopoeia: 'bim, bom' around Moditz, 'ay di gi day' in Ger, 'Ti la lidl la li la lo' à Karlyn, 'lay lay lay' in Bobov or 'oy, yoy' in Lubavitch...

New Duncan ImperialsWebsite
The NDI saga began in Chicago in the spring of 1989. Bored with the straight-ahead approach of the band they were in, Pigtail Dick (guitar and vocals), Skipper Zwackinov (bass, balloons, and vocal), and Goodtime Dammit (drums, drums, drums) began playing for laughs in the basement of Pigtail's mom's house. "She really, really hated us," Goodtime recalls. "That's when we knew we were onto something." The band focused on laying strange yet sharp lyrics. "Most of our songs were about food, or driving, or how to prepare intricate chicken dishes while driving," says Skipper. "A lot of people didn't get it, but the ones who did loved it." Their first gigs, noisy slugfests in cramped dives around the seedy parts of Chicago, are now the stuff of legend. It wasn't long before the band was the toast of the town, and soon one of the most widely-read rock critics in town, Bill Wyman of the Chicago Reader, had annointed them "The Best Band in the City." The Chicago Tribune followed suit (adding the word "live" to the title), and the boys were in business.

Reason To Rebel Website
There are many ways that musicians have responded when it came time to put out a sophomore album. With the members of Reason to Rebel, they had something to prove. In two years, a lot can happen. A war that once seemed destined short-lived, can begin to look like the military conundrums of yesteryear. And in two years, much-in-demand members of one band can release multiple recordings with over five different acts.

Eliot than musicians or songwriters.

Woodbox GangWebsite
From the village of Makanda in extreme southern Illinois, in a little hollow called Vulture Valley, comes a "caustic acoustic cacophony" known as the Woodbox Gang. They have skillfully combined the American roots music styles of bluegrass, delta blues, folk, and traditional country with the aggressive delivery of punk rock to create their own style of music to which they have given the name "Trashcan Americana". The band is very interested in experimenting with the combined sounds of various conventional and non-conventional instrumentation to create sonic landscapes specifically tailored to the mood and theme of each composition. Hugh DeNeal, their chief lyricist, uses his poetic talents to craft twisted tales of a dark, yet often humorous nature. The Woodbox Gang specializes in "story telling" songs. Alternative country icon Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers) has been quoted in several interviews citing the Woodbox Gang as one of his favorite new bands. The Woodbox Gang's influences are as diverse as the music which they perform. The group admires artists such as Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and the Ramones for their enduring inventiveness and their courage to "do their own thing, regardless of what anyone else may or may not be doing." The band's multi-instrumentalist Alex Kirt says "We are influenced by everything we've heard, whether it's a symphony orchestra or a push rod knockin' in an old 350 engine. Just about anything that makes a sound can be used to enhance the mood of a tune." This idea can be heard on any one of the group's 5 albums on which they've used traditional guitar, mandolin, lap steel, banjo, fiddle, and bass combined with didjeridoos, kazoos, sawblades, gutbuckets, crowbars, ashtrays, and rusty gasoline cans to add brilliant audio hues their musical palette.

The Histronic Website
The Histronic is a live three-piece electronic band (Drums, Bass, Keys), specializing in an intoxicating blend of live dance music that incorporates many genres (progressive trance, funk, house, hip hop beats, Latin, rock, funk). All three members come from diverse musical backgrounds, but the Histronic calls upon the band to step outside the box, and into a genre in which a live band creates the intricate sounds of a DJ. The group draws material from all three musicians, creating a true collaboration. The Drummer, Stereo Adik, is the foundation of the band; incorporating electronics into his acoustic drum kit, he pounds the bass drum to the floor like a human metronome. The Bass Player, W. Williams, locks in tightly with the drums, and keeps the crowd intrigued with melodic bass lines, synth effects, and a great stage presence. Williams, a very diverse composer, writes songs that span many genres from Hip - Hop to Electronica. The keyboard player, West Fox, makes the sound complete. Fox adds rich synth textures with catchy lead lines, and navigates multiple synthesizers, and to achieve a larger then life tone. The eclectic sound makes the Histronic popular amongst all types of music fans, because let's face it, everyone loves a good dance party! If you haven't had a chance to see this power-trio in action, make sure to check them out. (read less)

The New UpDescribed as "funky and frightening, intimate and anthemic" (PopMatters), "hip modern pop with a strong psychedelic streak" (Good Times) and "trippy new wave" with songs that "move with a seething, aggressive kind of dream logic" (The Chicago Reader), The New Up combines polished studio chops, hyper-intelligent compositions and inspired musicianship in their riveting live performances. With lyrics such as "lonely machinery distracts us from our lives," there's a sense of giddy desperation in their sound that feels downright prophetic. They observe that "pollution in the sky provides an amazing sunset" while grieving for Mother Nature on the run. That they do all this while churning out the kind of rock that used to rattle the walls at CBGB is what truly impresses.

Matthew KeatingWebsite
Matt Keating is in that same class of songwriter as Ron Sexsmith and Elliot Smith, but doesn't sound at all like either of them. His songs are elegant in structure and packed with wordplay that can amuse, dazzle, or hit way too close to home
The Injured Parties Website
With rich three-part harmonies, chugging electric guitar, deft rhythms and Dean's 'songs and sardonica' approach to composition, The Injured Parties' music draws inspiration from the melody and verve of vintage Kinks, the squonk of Neil Young's Crazy Horse, the blissful feedback of The Velvet Underground, the psychedelic twang of The Byrds, and the hard-edged pop of The Posies
The Pralines Website
The Pralines bring together mid-60s pop influences with classic roots/Americana. Song of the Day Café brings to mind the hope and innocence of that earlier era of rock music, when young people still believed they could change the world and that a better future was possible.

BigBangWebsite
Unbeknownst to many, for the last several years, Bigbang have been earning a reputation as one of the most surprising and influential bands to hail from Scandinavia. Coming off the heals of Radio Radio TV Sleep (Warner Music, Norway), the best selling live album in Norway’s history, Bigbang returned to the scene again in 2005 with Poetic Terrorism, which quickly shot to Norway’s 1 album slot.
The Great Crusades Website
Keep Them Entertained is The Great Crusades' 6th album since their 1998 inception. The Chicago band will release a decade-spanning career-retrospective DVD in May 2008.
The Thin Man Website
Kennedy supposedly started The Thin Man in 1996 when he moved to Chicago. First, it was just him. That version doesn't have any available recordings as far as I know. Probably it involved a campfire or Quencher's. The second version brought you A Cloud in Trousers and involved a bunch of people from other bands. I'm too lazy to write out their names, but you should be able to find out on the internet. The third version brought you H.M.S. Mondegreen as the old band was dropped (quit) and new people joined at Jeff "Stone Cold, Big Red" Boyd's urging. Version 3.5 of The Thin Man has had the same core line-up for the past 3 years since the completion of Mondegreen. They made Greasy Heart and are responsible for the live shows.

GMG Website
Forging new grounds in experimental funk and jazz fusion, GMG is a creative collective consisting of Greg Spero, Makaya McCraven and Graham Czach. These three phenomenally skilled musicians bring a nasty dynamic to the stage. Music is a language that crosses all boundaries, and GMG's original compositions are overflowing with culture. The insane funk of GMG is an amalgamation of each of the three artists' talents and contributions to music worldwide.

AkashaWebsite
Akasha is a fusion of deep groove reggae, blistery blues rock, and hip hop flavors with pure melodies and rich vocal harmonies. Stylistically, Akasha's base elements are never forced but always flow seamlessly from one song to the next. Akasha's diverse approach gives birth to an unmistakable variety of heavy, raw grooves reminiscent of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, and the Roots.

The BreakfastWebsite
The Breakfast is a hard-rocking jazz rock experimental quartet whose music ranges from rock to sonic landscapes.
The Hue Website
The Hue is an instrumental progressive rock quartet from Chicago. With an array of influences that range from film scores, metal and jazz to classical and bluegrass, The Hue has succeeded in creating a totally unique brand of electrified instrumental music. As their blistering sound continues to evolve, the band constantly finds new ways to create action-packed musical stories. From tight progressive rock tunes and wild dance-till-you-drop numbers to lyrical and melodious jazz pieces, a fiery dose of dueling guitars mix with the on-point attack of the rhythm section to reach explosive peaks.
The Station Website
Musical worlds colorfully collide in the form of The Station. Paired in a music scene long-dominated by excessive, guitar-heavy outfits dropping into 10-minute jam after jam of trading solos, they have been able to discover a newly-formed and rarely traveled crevice in today’s wall of sound. While guitar-rich in essence, The Station has managed to produce a sound void of the same all-too similar, stagnant riffs.
